Hands down these hats are great. They have a nice chick, and the open sounds are smooth as well. The heavier bottom hat help to even out a lot of harsh loud overtones compared to regular hi hats. I even like to flip them over and use the bottom hat as the top. You could pretty much compare these to Zildjian New beats. Sabian made these to sound great and to blend in every setting, and I really think they pulled it off. I've used these hats for rock, metal, punk, gospel and even jazz. I hope to see more from the Xs20 series!
I ordered these high hats a couple of weeks ago, and I'm more than satisfied with them. These replaced the really crappy set that came along with my set. They have a smooth sound both opened and closed and they seem to be very very durable and can take a beating for those who hit hard. If you're looking for a set of hihats that sound great and aren't too expensive, then these are the ones you should get.
A few years ago I went on a soul search for cymbals. I was looking for a ride & some hi-hats. I really didn't have a limited budget at the time, so I was almost willing to spend whatever price to get the cymbals I wanted. I wasn't going to buy anything I couldn't hear first though, either by actually getting a chance to play them - or at'least hear them online through an audio sample. At the time I was playing some lower line Zildjian cymbals that came within a beginners starter combination pack. One thing I was surprised to learn during my search was that the cost of cymbals more often then not didn't assure a better sounding cymbal. By no means am I saying that all the cheaper stuff sounded better. I'm just saying that cost very often didn't factor whether the cymbal sounded good or not. So after figuring out that great sounding cymbals can be found within all lines, it opened up a much broader range to pick from. For a while I was absolutely in love with the affordable MEINL Byzance line - but after a while I decided they were a bit bright sounding. I liked how Sabian had sound samples of almost all their cymbals - while it gave me a chance to to figure how they might sound in a recording. I found the entire line of XS20 to be wonderful. I liked how crisp the "Brilliant" line was - but I decided on the "Medium", feeling as if they were a bit warmer. It was important to me for the hi-hats to sound clean in all positions (open, closed). They have plenty of volume & record extremely well. No matter how the microphone is pointed, these hi-hats just sound fantastic. I've heard hi-hats twice the price that I would rather not have.
