After hearing Igor Cavalera's "other brand" big-bell ride, I knew I had to have one. I was dissatisfied after playing the "other brand's" model due to the fact that this cymbal lacked any type of definition or tone when played on the bow of the cymbal. I brought this to the attention of the owner of the local drum shop and he suggested this model: the Sabian Hand Hammered Power Bell Ride! Playing it immediatly sent chills up my spine. The bell is loud, and cuts through anything! Awesome for any kind of metal. Much more clear and defined than the "other brand's" model that sounded more clunky than pingy. Plus, you can actually ride on the bow of this cymbal. It has an amazing tone! Other big-bell rides usually sound very low and washy, but this sounds almost exactly like a HH Rock Ride. Amazing!!! I recommend this to any drummer looking for that big-bell sound that dosn't want to sacrifice in tone.
I've been sporting a Zildjian Ping ride for over 20 years (from back before they had the lower end liness... ya know... when the Zildjian name was enough to imply quality and you didn't have to rely on badges like Avedis, K, or A-Custom to know it was a nice cymbal). Anywho... I love it for SO many reasons, but it lacks volume and it sports a tiny little bell. So, after hearing Shannon Larkin play this HH live, I thought it might be worth the price tag. While I'm sure he gets the "best" one to come off the line any time he wants... I'm equally sure it's the same exact cymbal. They even etch the craftsman's signature under the bell... how cool is that? The bell is LOUD and clear and punishing if you so desire. And yet the "ride" quality is still amazing... the thing sings beautifully. No washy overtones or hums... really an ideal sounding ride that has the added advantage of VOLUME! Do yourself a favor and invest in a beefy stand... it's gotta be 30 pounds or more... it's a massive cymbal.
