I might've given this case four stars because of the seemingly shoddy design of the rear panel, but, to be honest, it has yet to disappoint me after significant use. Since SKB has a stellar warranty policy should it actually fail, I think the fifth star is justified. Thus far, my fear of the rear latches breaking has been unwarranted. Maybe I'm a bad example because I treat my stuff well, but I think the trick to not breaking the latches is to actually open them before yanking the panel off. Probably the worst thing I have to say, is that the front panel seems nearly water proof, but the rear isn't even slightly water resistant. The case does come with the necessary rail hardware, but I found it easier and possibly stronger to just use a 4U piece of threaded steel rail behind the aluminum one. I've read at least a few negative reviews concerning the internal depth, and the size of the rear panel. I don't think any of them are well-founded. Most seem to be from someone trying to cram in an over-sized amp. It's not called a shallow rack because it's stupid. If the shoe don't fit, don't buy it. I wear size 11. If I buy size 10, I don't think I've a right to complain. Moral of the story? Read the specs. So let's talk specs. It's 10.5 inches from the rail to the recessed flange of the rear panel. If you expect to have any space for wires, your units need to be less than 7 inches. For me, a Furman M-8x, PreSonus FireStudio, DigiMax, and headphone amp fit perfectly with just enough room in the rear for wires without being wastefully spacious. For controls, the front panel, at minimum, is cupped 2 inches deep from the rail. This seems a bit excessive, but it's not the end of the world. The rear opening is just shy of 4.5?16 inches. Yes, it does seem slightly small, but as best I can tell, it's a structural thing. If the opening were any larger, it would probably have to be similarly reinforced with aluminum like the front, significantly increasing the cost. Unless you get some more detailed pictures, it might not be evident that there is only one full handle on the right side, though there is a lip to grab on the left. For me, this has proved trivial, but might be noticeable if you pack some really heavy stuff in. At first, I was a little disappointed SKB hadn't figured out a way to make them stack for transportation with their standard-depth Roto Rack cases, but, after actual use, it's really been insignificant at worst. In the end, it's a tough little workhorse, and, as with most of their cases, I will likely never have to call SKB in on their warranty.

Placed my order online and it arrived very fast. only issue is that the front lid is warped. now I have to drive to the store and swap it out for another. based on the price and what it is, this is a great case. Seems very sturdy and comes with the SKB lifetime warranty. Its perfect because it is shallow and light weight. I think its going to last forever (once I get the new lid). Comes with a set of rack screws as well (very handy to have).

SKB Moulded XRACK-4 Case

Comments about SKB XRACK4 Roto-Molded 4U X-Rack Case:

Delivery time was excellent. Purchased for the protection & operation of my DMX lighting Controller, and it works great, in an upright position. I modified the case with recessed, side connections for signal & power, so all I do is to sit the case on my work surface (rear down), take off the top (front) cover, which raises the controls by the depth of the case, then plug in the extension cord and XLR signal cord, and I'm ready to go. I do not even need to touch the bottom (rear) cover, as operation does not require any inside access. Plenty of room in front of the SKB case for my mini-audio-mixer, putting all my lighting & audio controls together at my fingertips. Case is very durable and light weight, as well. So I would recommend it highly for any similar usage. Great protection for your equipment, very portable, very functional, and lightweight.

Comments about SKB XRACK4 Roto-Molded 4U X-Rack Case:

Started w/ purchasing a Gator GR-2S to carry a Behringer PMP518M amp. Took one web site's word that the PMP was 2U. NOT. So I returned the Gator for the XRACK4. Darn if the PMP didn't stick out a bit too far for the lid of the XRACK4. But I was able w/ some challenges to mount the PMP "inside" (against the inner rack lines) and the unit just cleared. Either case was good but I think the PMP518M is just a bit odd on rack design. I feel the XRACK4 is perhaps a bit more robust than the Gator and I would recommend it. My only negative would be the "backdoor" just doesn't seem very strong and the catches will likely be busted but only time will tell. Would recommend to others ...and the price was 80% of the Gator box.

      Comments about SKB XRACK4 Roto-Molded 4U X-Rack Case:

I found the rack to be very compact and durable, and easy to open and close. I mounted two wireless microphones over a 2U rackmounted drawer and a power strip on top. The only thing to be careful of was finding the proper depth drawer. I almost ordered a regular 2U drawer until I realized the short case dimensions only offered a limited selection of 2U drawers, and took a little bit of research to find the right depth drawer.

      Horrible design flaw

      By bryan poole

      from Phoenix

      Comments about SKB XRACK4 Roto-Molded 4U X-Rack Case:

I have owned a SKB rack case before, and had expected the same level of design with this model. Cons: back panel is HORRIBLY designed. Doesn't have metal clasps like the front, instead it's thin plastic with plastic twist locks. I am doubtful of its durability, but since it has a warranty from the manufacturer I guess I can live with that. The major flaw is the poor access to your mounted gear from the back. The back panel has a rounded flange that recesses further where the back cover twists on. The length of the opening is just over 4 inches!!! How can SKB think this is a good idea?! Here's my situation: Genz Shuttle 9.2 (2 rack spaces), and a Furman conditioner (1 rack space) mounted flush to the bottom. I can't plug in my amp because the flange covers it, and because its recessed, I can't fit the plug in between the flange. So, I mount everything flush to the top. Now I can't see the outlets on the conditioner to plug anything in!!!!! I even have one more rack space that I'm not using, and with this design, I can't think of how I could use it. Seriously, who thought making the back opening only 4 inches was a good idea?! Disappointing. And I paid 124 bucks for this thing. So it's great if you want to mount something that doesn't require electricity. Otherwise, pass on this junk and find something intelligently designed.

      Comments about SKB XRACK4 Roto-Molded 4U X-Rack Case:

This case was almost perfect! It is the toughest, most durable case I own, the only problem is, some of my rack units, such as my power condition, and power amp, ARE NOT well accommodated. They fit nicely, until you try to hook the cords up in the back. My PODHD Pro fit great, but that's about it. Really worth getting if you know your dimensions and give yourself some leeway.

Bought this today and put in a power conditioner, waiting for the rack kit for my amp. Also got a 2 space blank plate until I can get the other pieces. It seems well built and sturdy. Wish both panels were the same size. Can't wait to be able to protect my equipment properly.
