As racks go, this one was probably designed by an actual DJ or musician who has been frustrated by other half baked rack designs in the past. THANK YOU whoever you are!!!! When I install a mixer into a rack, my intention is to hardwire as many things as possible so as to minimize setup time at the gig. The roomy lid for this mixer allows for leaving your wires in place. I've owned similar racks that forced me to pull out every last jack just to put the lid on. Later for that!

Functionally speaking, this rack rocks! What does not rock is the material used to construct it. There are 4 little feet on the bottom which work OK as long as they make actual contact with the surface, but when it comes time for stacking with other gear or on any surface where all 4 feet cannot sit, the thing slides around like a greased pig. For example, I use one of those Rok n' Roller carts to move my gear. If I don't place this rack perfectly centered and balanced on the cart, it will slide like an egg on a Teflon pan. I've spilled my gear twice so far. SKB should really consider adding a textured surface, at least underneath, to avoid this slippage problem. A quick user fix for it might be to get some grip strips from the hardware store, but for a respected company like SKB, I would expect them to address this beforehand.

Another minor issue I have with this rack is its bulkiness. Seems to me there is a lot of airspace that could possibly be minimized to make lifting it a less awkward task. I suppose having that extra airspace is good for cooling purposes, but it does add to the overall bulk. Also, the handles could be designed better. I am not able to put my hand in from the top of the handle such as I would when carrying it with a helper side by side. It forces you to grip it from underneath which can cause your arm to twist in an unnatural manner.

I purchased this rack with the retractable shelf, which is really cool. There is an issue with the cloth material curling up and pulling away from the metal shelf. Again, I would not expect this from an SKB product. The shelf itself is rugged and well made. Why use Elmer's glue on an otherwise excellent product?

Lord knows what goes on behind closed doors during the product design phase. What might have started out as the ultimate piece of gear on the blueprint table ends up being severely compromised by the company bean counters. Online music stores have almost succeeded in convincing people that the products they sell are "professional", when in my opinion, most of it is entry level. As long as people buy it, they'll continue to manufacture and sell it. SKB came very close to having a "10" with this rack, but there were some obvious corners cut to increase their profit margin. The reality is, you cannot escape cheapness, otherwise you'll be chasing the Holy Grail for the rest of your career. If you need it...buy it!

I wanted this rack for my DJ equipment and planned to place my XENYX 1202FX mixer, BOSS vocal processor, and external hard drive where you see the turntable in the picture. I purchased this rack online at the store with the help of a Pro-audio guy I always work with. The picture on-line is kind of deceiving. We both thought it came with the flip-up shelf and that the "8-Space Audio/Video Shelf (not included)" referred to the turntable and shelf it might rest on which is shown in the pic. The rack is basically a sturdy hollow shell, rugged side handles, and metal rails that accept standard rack mount equipment. I had the rack delivered to the store and both the Pro audio guy and myself were a little disappointed when we opened the box. I ended up purchasing the shelf (Item # 105806095 ) for an additional $50. My VocoPro wireless receiver chassis and Furman PL-8 power conditioner bolted in easily. After making my own shelf to support my mixer, etc, I'm happy with the final result, but I feel I overpaid. Pros: Lightweight, versatile, sturdy Cons: Expensive for what you get

Comments about SKB Roto Rack Console - Audio and DJ Rack Case:

Most racks you will find are HEAVY. I looked everywhere for something different. I finally decided on this rack because of its weight. It is only 24 pounds! That is half the weight of some racks the same size. I have loaded up this rack with a mixer and many extras including a very heavy amplifier so light weight is key. I did end up putting a couple of little shims underneath the amp to take some of the pressure off of the front because I could tell the plastic was actually bending at the weight.

When I received it I found that it was larger than I thought it was going to be. The rack is very deep so it is not the greatest when you're plugging in cords every gig.

Finally, I am quite gentle with my gear. If you were throwing this thing in and out of vans and stages each week I could see something colliding with the rack and breaking it. It's not as sturdy as the wood cases with twice the weight. So decide if you want to eventually break the shell or break your back! Due to the plastic it can also get scratched up quite easily.

Overall I am happy with it. I wish it was sturdier but for my purposes it's what I needed.

Comments about SKB Roto Rack Console - Audio and DJ Rack Case:

The new hard shell top is a definite improvement over the soft cover top. The front "door" is hinged to the top. The back door has slots in the case for added solidity. Latches are solid and firm and can be locked for transport, but airport security can unlock them with their own TSA encoded keys, cool. Comes with screws to anchor in your equipment. One curious note: the top rail ends about 4 inches from the back side of the box. Would have been nice to extend that further, then again it would be a 14 top, 6 bottom, duh. Great case. Just wish it was available in a wheeled version. Load this up and it's heavy.

Great case for any mobile DJ.

Comments about SKB Roto Rack Console - Audio and DJ Rack Case:

Overall, I like this case adn would highly recommend to others.
This case has it all... its light, totally sealed when closed to keep out dust and weather, full 19" rack support into metal rack rails. Great space on top and below for additional equipment. There is a 1U space unused at the top of the rack - perfect for wires in/out and venting heat from inside the case. When the option shelf is installed, it completely folds up and into case for transport. Excellent.
You can tell by looking at this case that it was constructed with the utmost case and the strictest ot quality standards.
I've see other cases but I believe the value this case gives you greatly out weighs all others. You won't be disappointed.

      Poor design

Comments about SKB Roto Rack Console - Audio and DJ Rack Case:

I bought this rackmount case with the optional rack for a computer. The designer did not allow space for the laptop computer and I have a very slim laptop computer. Therefore, the cover does not fit. That is the most import part because the computer must be protected. Plus the first night out, the right side latch broke. I don't have the time nor want to expend the effort to do a return. Especially since I spent a whole day putting in the Furman and other rackmounted add ons and organized and velcroed the wiring. I have a large DJ Company in Tucson, Arizona and if this case worked out right I was going to buy 24 of them. A word to the designers, please test your product before sending it to the manufacturer.

This Audio and DJ Rack Case was absolutely worth every penny. Not only does it protect my gear, but it looks professional, and hides the over-abundance of cables, ext. cords, etc. I recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade and go more professional.

      Not so great!

Comments about SKB Roto Rack Console - Audio and DJ Rack Case:

I did call SKB about my problems and they would have helped. Which meant sending stuff directly back to them and they would fix or replace. I simply dont have time for all that. I would have liked them to send me out a new hinge and I would have put in on correctly, but they could not do that. I am pretty crafty and was able to fix the problems my self. For the lid, I just drilled little holes along the outside of the crack and used zip ties. The case now has character and looks like it has stiches. Old trick I learned for the quad runners fenders and stuff when you wreck and need to put things back together real fast. For most I think SKB would be great in helping if you have time for all that. When I order stuff it is usually because I need it now, not later. I think I will continue to use the likes of Gator cases and maybe some others. Done with SKB.
With the addition of the shelf, which has to be ordered seperately it is a great idea. Lightweight and I can cram my whole rig in here.
Not to happy here. SKB used to be practically bullet proof. Not so much any more. The bottom half which is most important is constucted pretty good, but the lid is crap and broke easily. Cheap plastic. The lid is a pretty important part since usually damage occurs to your gear while transporting. They should have used better quality material. If they wanted to make things right they should make a better lid available for replacement. Also, I think there quality control must suck. I have purchased 4 different SKB products in the last year and am only happy with 1. Which is the SKB Studio Flyer 2U. The rest have hardware such as hinges and latches mounted incorrectly.
Idea is great but the quality of there product now is just hindered.
