Overview

The Reflexion Filter 3.5 is a portable device for recording live sound sources with reduced room ambiance. It is an advanced composite wall which is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable position stand clamp assembly which ships with the product. The main function is to help obtain a 'dry' vocal or instrument recording. This is especially useful in studios without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record takes in control rooms, where the performer also has to operate the recording device, or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise.

The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency waveforms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy.

The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter.

The stand assembly is composed of a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position.

The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

So I just go this the other day and immediately used it for vocals in a small home studio. The vocalist was standing in an open room and singing through an ST77. The sound was great but that mainly comes through the pre, mics and cables. The sound would normal have been relatively thin b/c of the room noises. Instead it sounded great and smooth. No, it was no vocal booth but for a home studio I know nothing that competes other than spending a ton on Auralex. The moving dia. that is in the filter is great and produces a great noise canceling effect. The worse part was setting it up but that wasn't hard really. Overall, it is GREAT. A must have for any SERIOUS engineer

This piece of gear does its job but the problem comes in when you dont have a sturdy durable mic stand. This piece of gear is extremely to heavy and can become very frustrating. You definitely dont want to sit a 5000 dollar mic in a shock mount connected to this thing because it definitely will come tumbling down. But overall it still does its job. You might need to purchase a 300 dollar mic stand

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

Still getting used to this product, but the vocals sound much better then they did since I got this reflection filter. The sound is much more isolated. The only thing is it's just too darn heavy, and not the most compact, but otherwise worth the price. This will get you where you need to be for isolated vocals in a non treated room, won't perfect everything, but definitely 10x better to have then not.

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

at first i was skeptical about buying this filter but after awhile of me looking around and using cheap (affordable) filter i decided to give this a try thinking why not but the moment i assembled this i noticed a big difference in sound quality and that the vocals were much clearer and a lot better then the ghetto looking foam ones it is defiantly worth the money because it will pay for itself in the long run well for me anyways because i sell studio time and even my customers noticed a big difference its like i tell ppl cheap money is only gonna make cheap music especially when it comes to sound quality u never wanna cut corners with that so if i were u jus take a chance i promise u its worth every penny

Home Studio Must Have!!!

By

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

This is probably the best purchased I could have made for my home studio. I have my set up in a small room to I didnt have too much of reverb or flutter problem. But I lacked pronounced vocals. With this it really sounds as though I have a vocal booth.

Great investment

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

After adding this filter to my home studio with limited acoustic treatment, I got nothing but great feedback from the artist I record. They all noticed the differnce in how they sound on recordings as compared to before. We all agree that the sound is much fuller. Making my clients happy = equals more money!!! :) Great investment.

Great for home studios

By

from Seattle, WA

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

I've had this for two years now and it's really helped in my recordings. The noise floor and lack of mud of vocal takes and general instrument recordings in my studio is night and day from before. I use it every time I record vocals and instruments at home now. Another thing that is great about this is that I prefer the figure 8 polar pattern for vocals a majority of the time when compared to regular cardoid. Before the filter, I hardly ever used the figure-8 option because just too much noise would creep into the signal. With the filter, I'm able to record with a figure-8 polar pattern (and omni) and I feel like I'm getting more of my money's worth out of the mics I already have. Great product and well worth it, even though its expensive.

Does what it says

By

from Chatham, VA

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

My recording studio has some sound treatment, but there are still some problems with reflections. I read other reviews on the reflexion and thought this would help my problem. I tried it out recording vocals, setting it up as the manual recommended and I was very pleased with the results. Everyone that recorded had positive comments about the results. Definitely a good investment. It is heavy, as mentioned in some other reviews, but not that bad, I used a counterweight on the mic stand and it's perfectly stable.

WORTH IT!

By

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

I was using alesis 8 channel usb mixer and some mic ( worth like 80 bucks, cant remember the name) and the sound quality was horrible especially considering the fact that i didnt have any sound proof equipment. well i bought the M-Audio Sputnik along with this filter. As i was waiting for the mic to arrive i setup this reflection filter to see if it would make any difference and WOW! made my old mic sound really good. NO OUTSIDE NOISE if u set the postion of the mic correctly...cancelled computer noise too which was important!!! THIS IS WORTH IT....it will make ur vocals sound soooo smooth.

Expensive, but works great!

By

from Keyport, NJ

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

This thing works wonders in open rooms that reverberate a lot. Before I got this, I could always hear that 'open room' sound on my tracks. This won't give you a 100% dead/dry sound, but combined with other cheap treatment methods, you could achieve vocals that sound like they were recorded in a properly treated environment. Pair this up with a nice mic and add a quality preamp and you will have nice clean vocals!

SE Reflection filter

By

from New York

Comments about SE Electronics Reflexion Filter PRO:

This is a great filter. As soon as you put it up to your face and talk into it you can hear what it does. There are now other things out there by RealTraps, that are bigger but they block your view of the singer when they record. This is a lot better than the Auralex mic thing. This is not a magic bullet though as it is best to have some acoustic treatment in your room, including an absorption panel behind the singer as well. Call Real Traps or GIK Acoustics for that. Make sure you have the mic just on the inside of the filter. It sounds best with this setup. This really makes your home recordings sound much better as you don't get the voice hitting off the walls and getting into your mic. Have a strong stand, and push the rod all the way in to put more of the weight towards the center.
