I will start off by saying, am an enormous fan of JJ tubes I recently bought a used Peavey 6505 amp, and I figured I would go ahead and put in some of my favorite JJ 6L6 tubes. Well I immediately noticed a difference, the JJs sounded great but MAN these 6L6GCMSTR (stock Peavey tubes) sound amazing! They have a very hot distortion sound, focused bottom end that does not get too boomy, and the mids just scream out. The high end on these can get a bit ice picky sounding, but not anymore than most tubes. These tubes are specially designed for Ruby Tubes by the Sino/shanguang chinese tube factory. They are based on an old NOS philips 6l6 tube from the 60s I believe. They are the STOCK valves in Peavey 6505 series amps, Mesa boogie amps (6l6 STR 440 they are called) and groove tubes also re labels them as 6l6-CHP I believe or something along those lines. Do not confuse them with the ruby 6L6GCSTR, the M in the name is very important! Very different tube. These are my new favorite 6L6 for sure. Worth every penny, and not too expensive!
I have these tubes in my Peavey and really like them. On a whim, I decided to retube my 13 year old Crate Blue Voodoo BV120H (The same Blue Voodoo that has been flamed for more than a decade as unreliable and lacking character but has never broken and is still in use). So, with a new quad of JJ 12ax7's in the preamp and a quartet of these Ruby's for the power, the Crate has new life. The JJ"s went in first, which took the ice pick highs out of this bright amp. Then the Ruby's went in. After a warm up and rebias, I found that the Ruby's accentuated the mids. Nice, warm, clear, articulate cleans. I'm not going to even try to compare them to the Groove Tube rebranded Sovteks that came out because they were old and tired, but the tones in this Crate are better than I remember. These Chinese relabeled tubes gave my tired old Crate a lot of punch, sweet clarity and character. If your amp is lacking that certain something that you originally fell in love with and your thinking of new tubes, I'd give these Ruby's a shot.
For the price, these babies are awesome. I've only had them for a week, so who knows how long they will last. But I slapped them in my old peavey and they sound great. If they last long, I'd buy another set next time I need 'em.
I put these tubes in my B52 AT-100 head and was absolutely blown away. Warm, smooth, articulate, sweet breakup, are a few words that come to mind. Don't be scared that these are Chinese tubes. They are sweeeet and priced right if you get them 2 or 4 at a time. Make sure you re-bias your amp to the new tubes' rating. Bottom Line is these tubes sound great!!!
