Overview

Travel-ready, affordable, and outfitted with top-level Roland sounds, the V-Combo VR-09 is the ideal all-in-one solution for performing keyboard players. Dedicated piano, organ, and synth sound engines-organized in three intuitive blocks on the front panel-provide all the essential tones you need, right under your fingertips. The powerful real-time controls give you maximum expression on stage, with nine sliders for tone shaping and a large array of knobs and buttons for tweaking the seven simultaneous effects and various parameters. Other great features include an onboard looper, a drum section stocked with a library of rhythms for practice and jamming, and more. With its versatile sound selection, inspiring operation, and smart user interface, the V-Combo VR-09 is a dream come true for gigging musicians.

Intuitive Operation for Expressive Stage Performance
The V-Combo VR-09 was designed from the ground up with the needs of live players in mind. An intuitive front-panel layout and clear LCD screen offers quick access to Roland's top piano, organ, and synth sound engines, along with plenty of real-time controls for expressive tone manipulation. Seven simultaneous effects include rotary, delay, reverb, tone, overdrive, compressor, and customizable MFX, with dedicated knobs that tweak multiple parameters with a single twist for powerful sound shaping with minimal effort. The smart interface makes it simple to set up splits and layers on the fly, and to save all your keyboard settings in user memory locations for instant recall on stage.

Pro Acoustic and Electric Pianos
Piano is a cornerstone sound for live playing, and the V-Combo VR-09 is filled with a wide selection for covering all musical styles. The gorgeous acoustic grand piano features 88-note stereo multi-sampling, delivering pro-level tone that rivals Roland's dedicated stage pianos. Many popular vintage E. Piano sounds are onboard as well, along with complimentary effects such as vintage phaser and tremolo. The compressor-accessible via a dedicated, easy-to-reach knob-transparently boosts the level of the piano sounds, ensuring that your playing always cuts through when performing in loud bands.

World-Class Organs
Roland's renowned SuperNATURAL technology powers the V-Combo VR-09's classic tonewheel organs, while nine harmonic bars provide authentic real-time performance control. A newly developed transistor-type organ is also included, offering the unique sound of combo instruments from the 1960s. The 61-note keyboard has an extremely fast response, perfect for essential organ techniques such as trill, sputter, glissando, and percussive hits. Rotary speaker and amp simulators reproduce the characteristics of vintage organ speaker cabinets and overdriven tube circuits with astounding realism, while a new "Twin Rotary" option delivers a deep, aggressive effect never before heard.

Vintage and Modern Synth Tones
The V-Combo VR-09 is packed with a ton of ready-to-play synthesizer sounds, from vintage analog classics like JUNO strings and ‘80s synth brass to textured, modern-era digital tones and beyond. Front-panel controllers allow you to tweak the synth tones intuitively in real time, including convenient ADR and cutoff/resonance adjustment with the harmonic bars in the ORGAN block. Onboard effects like "Bit Crash" provide the ability to create modern synth voices for current dance music, including dubstep.

VR-09 Editor for iPad
The free VR-09 Editor app for iPad gives you powerful, intuitive control of the organ and synth sound engines via your tablet's full-color touchscreen interface. Quickly edit organ sounds and customize vintage tonewheel characteristics such as leakage, click noise, and rotary speed, and easily access synth sounds to build custom tones and layers. After tweaking sounds at home, you can take your iPad to the gig and use the app for extra real-time control on stage. Convenient, cable-free communication between the V-Combo VR-09 and iPad is simple to set up with Roland Wireless Connect. Alternately, you can link up with a USB cable via Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit.

A Quality Combo Organ for a Relatively Low Price

By Ajon Golembiewski

from El Toro, CA

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

How about 4.5 stars?? I've played on several high-end, mid-range and low-end keyboards, and I think I'd place this one between mid and high. It has very good sounds with many settings and features to customize. And an intuitive layout that most people will get used to quickly. Overall, I'd say this is a great value for those looking for a quality, easily portable combo organ for a lower price. You can get really amazing organ, piano, e. piano and synth sounds from this keyboard... not as polished and/or distinct as more expensive instruments, but plenty workable, even for pros or semi-pros. Yes, there are some quirks (that for the most part could be fixed with system updates), and you will find arguably better products out there for sound sticklers, but I feel this does a really good job for the money. Also, I recommend: 1) Download and use the latest update from Roland's website (it won't delete your registrations, though you should back them up anyway), and 2) With many easy to configure settings, get in there and edit and save sounds 'til they're just how you want them!

GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK!

By john C. lobosco

from PORT ST LUCIE, FL

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

I BOUGHT THIS KEYBOARD OVER THE CINCO DE MAYO WEEKEND SALE & GOT A GREAT PRICE DEAL! I HAD RECENTLY SOLD MY ROLAND JUNO DI KEYBOARD SO THIS WAS IT'S REPLACEMENT. WELL RIGHT OFF THE BAT IT WAS A LOT EASIER & INTUITIVE TO CREATE & STORE SPLITS & LAYERS WHILE ALSO SAVING MFX SETTINGS FOR SPECIFIC INSTRUMENT SOUNDS SUCH AS "TWIN ROTARY" FOR THE TONEWHEEL ORGAN SOUNDS, "TREMOLO & PHASER"" FOR THE EP SOUNDS, "WAH" FOR THE CLAV, ETC., EVEN ASSIGNING THE ROLE OF THE D-BEAM CAN BE SAVED FOR EACH INSTRUMENT WHEN WRITTEN & SAVED IN A BANK SET. IT'S THE SAME SIZE & WEIGHT (12LBS) AS THE JUNO (& ALSO RUNS ON 8 AA RECHARGABLE BATTERIES)SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO BUY A NEW CASE! VERY EASY TO SAVE YOUR USER SETTINGS ONTO THE USB MEMORY STICK! I PREFERRED HAVING THE JUNO-DI'S 10 BANKS OF 10 MAKING IT EASIER TO SWITCH BETWEEN BANKS RATHER THAN THE VR-09'S 25 BANKS OF 4. ALSO I MISS THE MIKE INPUT FROM THE JUNO WITH DEDICATED EFFECTS & VOLUME KNOB & THE JUNO HAD 1,000 MORE SOUNDS, BUT: THE 200 SOUNDS ON THE VR-09 ARE ALL USABLE & SAVES A LOT OF TIME GOING THRU BANKS OF SOUNDS YOU'D PROBABLY NEVER USE ANYWAY. I ALSO LOVE THE VR-09 HAVING THE REALTIME CONTROL OF THE 6 EFFECTS KNOBS RIGHT THERE (OVERDRIVE, COMPRESSOR, TONE, REVERB, DELAY, MFX). THIS KEYBOARD WOULD'VE BEEN WORTH THE PRICE I PAID JUST AS A STAND ALONE "CLONEWHEEL" ORGAN!! ADDING GREAT PIANOS, EL PIANOS, GUITARS, BASS,STRINGS, BRASS-WINDS, SYNTH, PERCUSSIVE SOUNDS ETC. MAKES THIS A VERY VERSATILE ONE KEYBOARD RIG! I DOUBT I'LL NEED TO BRING MORE THAN ONE KEYBOARD TO A GIG AGAIN! MISCELLANEOUS STUFF: CHECK OUT THE "GROWL" EFFECT ON THE SAX & THE GLISSANDO EFFECT ON THE TRUMPET! ALSO THERE'S AN IPAD APP FOR MORE IN DEPTH PROGRAMMING OF THE B-3 TYPE ORGAN AS WELL AS FOR TWEAKING SYNTH TONES. KEYBOARD ALSO HAS A "LOOPER" FEATURE IF YOU'RE INTO CREATING YOUR OWN GROOVE TRACKS & OVER 50 DRUM PATTERNS YOU CAN JAM WITH (NOT ENOUGH DRUM STYLES FOR A SOLO GIG-CHECK OUT ROLAND'S BK-7M FOR OVER 400 RHYTHYM STYLES)! OH, & THE USB CAN BE USED TO PLAY MP3'S OR SMF'S IF NEED BE! ALL IN ALL, DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR YOU CAN'T BEAT THIS KEYBOARD FOR PRICE & OVERALL SOUND QUALITY & VERSATILITY!

Pound-forPound Greatest Value !!!

By Joe

from Georgetown, MA

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

This keyboard at its $ selling price is the best new purchase I've ever made. For months I was searching for a portable solution for my tonewheel organ needs. My criteria: Authentic sound, lightweight, solid rotary effect, and drawbars a must (which limited my choices). I went back and forth between the Nord and Hammond offerings, then I accidentally stumbled across the VR-09. When I first saw the price I thought I need to rule this out because how can it be this good at 1/2 to 1/3 the price of the competitors. After more research I figured I have to give it a try. Wow! incredible the VR-09 more than satisfies all criteria, and I have the bonus of great piano, electric piano, synth etc... plus a looper, recorder, effect...soooo much! I would've been thrilled with just the clonewheel portion. It's crazy to me that this VR-09 isn't more well known.

great keyboard for the money!

By Jerry Bull

from Billings, MO

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

I'm really surprised this instrument doesn't get more attention, it's super easy to set up for playing live with all the necessary sounds. And with the editor app for the ipad it is outstanding and is super easy to dial in some very convincing B3 sounds. Whether you need some Hammond sounds or some 80's Van Halen like synth sounds or even some nice sounding piano, this light weight gadget seems almost too good to be true. I'd definitely purchase this again.

Best second keyboard around

By BOYD WOOD

from Stafford CT

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

This is a fantastic keyboard for B3 sounds. Its horn / string / piano simulations are not great, but it does organs amazingly well - percussion, after touch, a full set of drawbars, two-speed Leslie, and overdrive for tube distortion. Put this above a good digital piano for all of your keyboard needs. It also does some pretty commendable 80's fat analog synth sounds.

A great keyboard for the money!!

By Daniel

from Albuquerque, NM

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

As one of the other reviewers wrote, it is surprising this keyboard doesn't get more attention. My ratings are: Controls: Excellent layout; very intuitive especially for playing live. The biggest problem are the controls feel a little fragile. However, there is really no other keyboard out there that gives semi-real drawbars at this price level. Keyboard: Also feels a little fragile, but otherwise it quiet enough to play comfortably sitting at home (unlike my Nord!), and decent feeling action. Sounds: Synths: Excellent Organ: pretty good; certainly good enough in a band situation. Pianos: so-so, but again good enough in a band (i.e., not so strong by itself).

Meets expectations

By Harry

from St Paul, Minnesota

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

I have a Tascam DP32 and this addition to my studio is excellent. So far I have used the organ, piano and synthesizer horns sections. I'm not a keyboard player, however, the ease of use has been better than I imagined. Highly recommend and the value/price ratio is over 100%.

About Me Professional Musician

Pros

  • Easy to Use
  • Portable
  • Realistic Sound
  • Touch Sensitive Keys

Cons

  • No Speakers

Best Uses

  • Classic Rock Band

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

I play almost every weekend, in several local classic rock bands, so portability is key. Super light, easy to setup, & super easy to make adjustments and changes "on the fly". The Tonewheel Organ is excellent, I used a few of the presets, plus saved my own using the drawbars. If you're looking for a lower cost Hammond, this is a great choice. Also, very nice Brass, good Synths, Strings/Pads, EP, Bass. Lots of other sounds too. Not many sound effects, no thunder, helicopters, etc. The Pianos are just okay. I would not use this for a solo piano gig, but it's totally adequate for the bands. And playing every weekend, the light weight is so very key. Using the user-presets, I saved a number of combinations of organs, dual instruments (making better strings, synth combos, etc), and splits, so I can be ready for any of our songs in just a few seconds. I love how easy it is to make changes while playing live, many times I decide mid-song to change a sound or setting, it's just so easy. One downfall, is that there are only 2 pedal inputs. Damper, and the other I use for Rotor on/off. They make a volume pedal, but you have to give up the rotor switch. Bummer! I guess it's not so hard to use the Rotor switch on the keyboard (either a button or the bend wheel), but I just prefer using the foot switch. So, oh well, no volume pedal. Also, what a price! I'm sure there are better keyboards out there, but at 2+ times the cost? All in all I love this keyboard. It's definitely a super-value, and has handled every song I've needed to play thus far. Only needing one keyboard also helps when I have to fit into a small space! Love it!

Really in love with my VR-09 keyboard

Best Uses

Comments about Roland VR-09 V-Combo Organ:

I'm a guitarist in a band, and sometimes play keys, I really wanted some good piano and vintage organ sounds. I replaced my 35 year old Kawai with this baby, and no regrets. I'm playing keys a lot more and our band can play a lot more songs than before. The best part is I don't have to try to figure out how to program a sound from scratch, just find something close and tweak. Even though I program computers for a job, for some reason, I just want something plug and play for keys. This fits the bill. Maybe my expectations are low, but I also really like many of the horns (trumpet, sax, oboe) and some of the strings. The built in looper is fun, but need more than 20 seconds for a good 12 bar blues loop. Also If you make an error, you have to start over. I'll just stick with my Boss Loop Station.

Pros

  • Easy to Use
  • Lower in price compared to Nord or Hammond Sk-1

Currently using this as a subsitute as my other keyboard is not working, lower in priced than Nord and Hammond Sk-1 series. Very light weight and portable, and good features like the D-eye beam.
