I bought this for practicing with my band when we needed volume control. A few TRS cables through the PA and it sounded great; nothing like acoustic drums but good enough for practice. I've used them in the studio a few times and if you take the time like I did you can dial in exactly what you want. There are lots of great samples out there, both free and pay, so you're not out of luck if the stock kits aren't your jam. Looking back, this purchase was much more useful than my original intention. They are awesome for everyday practice at any time of day, great for quieter jam sessions and useful for recording sessions. I have never went on a gig with them as I still prefer my acoustic set for that, as most drummers probably do, but if I ever needed to I wouldn't give it a second thought. There is no kick pedal included so if you don't have one you will need one of those also, that adds another couple hundred to the price-tag.
This kit exceeded my expectations. Im a relatively new drummer, and chose this kit to primarily learn on because I live in an apartment. The stock sounds are of excellent quality and diverse. The make of every component is sturdy, from the stand (which looks simpler than other stands made by competitors like Yamaha, etc. but is incredibly stout) to the pads to the mounting hardware. I've now began to record into an audio interface using just a single instrument cable to record the mono audio output just using the stock sounds. This works surprisingly well. Obviously there are clear disadvantages of this when you get to the mixing phase because there's only one audio signal for the entire kit and not separate signals for each component like you would have on a mic'd acoustic set or a much more expensive e-kit. But, for starting out, this has been excellent and much better than nothing. The individual sounds are very easily sculptable on the brain of the kit, and the raw stock sounds are fun to manipulate and EQ in the DAW once recorded. I have owned this kit for about 4 months and have had ZERO issues. I play on it daily and the pads and cymbals are still immaculate. The responsiveness of the triggers in each pad are mind boggling and very adjustable. From the slightest tap to a hard snap, and everything in between. It's as close as you can get to the real thing. Roland nailed it - they clearly know what they're doing.
I was in the market for a electric kit in order to save space and have different sound options without buying several different kits. Upon un-boxing, I was impressed. Great quality hardware, the mesh head snare is awesome, and the module has too many options to list. I also purchased a Simmons 50watt monitor for use with the kit. Very pleased with all of it. You can practice, record, and mix in your own music to make tracks to. The kit is even responsive enough to pick up stick bounces other kits i have played could not. Cannot say how pleased I really am.
I am very pleased with this set. You can tweak everything to make it sound just how you like it.
I have never owned a pair of drums in my entire life until I brought these drums. As a starter kit, going with an electronic set vs. analog doesn't even compare. So glad I went with this electronic set for starters. This kit set has really good quick accurate response and it was everything I thought and needed it to be. To be honest, if you don't like this set as a starter set, then either yours was defective (highly unlikely) or you don't know what you are doing. You can arrange your own preset sounds for your toms and crash and ride and high hats and also change the way the snare sounds on your own by way of custom presets. It also comes with built in presets in all varieties of music. Good Buy! Also, the Kick drums does not wear out too fast and you can even jam on it a little harder than other poorer quality kick drums. Also applicable for double foot pedals. I wish the set was just a tab bit taller but overall it has been great. Very easy to assemble too. You can even use your rock band drums sticks with this set with ease and sound just as good and stick get a quality roll and bounce off the snare and toms.
I upgraded from a Roland HD-1 and there is no comparison. The TD-11K feels and sounds very natural. With the HD-1, in order to get better sounds, I would rely on the midi output, but there is little reason to use that with the TD-11K although you can. You can adjust every pad or an entire kit with the smallest of adjustments from ambience (room type), volume and so much more. The feel of the bass drum on the KD-9 is so responsive, it feels like you're using an acoustic kick. I use a double-bass pedal and it flies off the head of the KD-9. The expressiveness on the snare allows you to use the rim for great sounding rimshots and the xstick allows you to lay the stick across the snare for a nice ballad-style rimshot. I am adding a CY-13R to complete the set, but even without it it plays beautifully.
I've been a drummer for 15 years. This is, however, my first electric kit. I've tested out many kits in all price ranges. When I bought this kit I used a GC coupon. For the price I couldn't have asked for more! Many of the $500-$600 kits have pretty poor response or the pads aren't tunable/changeable. This kit has great response and I can pick between kits, create my own and make some changes to each pad. Good product at a good price
Right out of the box i could tell the kit was high quality for a starter set, although i am not a drummer but an Audio Engineer, I use kit for Triggering drum samples on Toon-Track Superior Drummer 2.0, All i did to set it up: I first installed the TD-11 k Drivers for Mac OSX then plugged in a USB cable to my computer loaded my Superior Drummer plugin in my daw(Protools) and it was as simple as plug and play. All the parts to this kit are really High quality, Roland did a great job for a budget kit like the TD-11k
