Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:

I probably wouldn't have bought it had I researched more about the lack of quantization. Outside of using it as a midi controller for different daw's, it won't sync time clock. There are work arounds if you want to use this for backtracks, but not as easy as it could be. The extra trigger ins work great. This unit is still a beast. I love it!

Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:

I use this sample pad for percussion instruments and backing tracks for our shows. Upgrading from the Alesis pad was like night and day. This sample pad does everything I need it to and beyond. Quick load times, large 2GB storage, and no cross-talk at all. This product is definitely worth the money.

As a show choir director, this product is amazing for my back up band. I can use thousands of sounds to enhance my show choir without having to bring hundreds of instruments. The price may seem steep but it is well worth it.

Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:

I am a professional musician and I have been using sample pads for many years (Roland SPD-S, Roland Octopad, Yamaha DTX) and this is easily the best one yet in my opinion. The pad is very user friendly and can be operated without reading the user manual. The Yamaha DTX has limits on each sample size which is a huge bummer and only 100MB of internal memory. The SPD-SX has 2GB of internal memory and no limit on the sample size. The SPD-SX Wave Manager makes loading and managing your own samples a breeze. I am very happy with this purchase.

                Great Upgrade to SPD-S

                By DEVIN WALKER

                from Washington, DC

Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:

The SPD-SX is a great upgrade from the SPD-S because I can connect it directly to my computer and program the pad accordingly. Also, there is plenty of space for me to save what I've done and backup onto a flash drive or computer is easy. This saves me so much time and preparation. This alone is worth it. I must say that the feel of the SPD-SX is not as precise as the SPD-S, however. For example, it seems as though the top pads must be hit in a certain spot in order to trigger the sound, whereas, with the SPD-S, I could hit any where on the cushion pad and will get my sound. This might be because I purchased a floor model that used as a sample in one of the stores. Overall, I love this machine. I use it to trigger in music and for percussion while using the Octapad as my drum set. I am virtually a one-man band, performing children shows. I'm able to play at shows using only the two pads, with the Roland Hi-Hat and KD-7 bass drum trigger added. I can set up in 20 minutes caring three bags (I carry my own speaker), two if a sound system is already provided. I sometimes add a real snare and a small Tom Tom, and use the triggers to connect it to the pads as well. I love it. I do believe that the price can come down a little, however, I don't see that happening because I don't recall a price drop on the SPD-S. It will take some time learning everything, but that's with anything these days. I recommend it.

my drummer owns this unit ...

                By Anthony Croteau

                from Auburn, ME

Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:

and from what I've experienced with it by his usage, this is a fantastic improvement over the SPD-S, just in terms of the increased storage. As for Earl Brackett's review re: it not being compatible with OSX 10.7, I have a news flash for you, Earl. Go to Roland.com, then Product Support, click on the letter S, then click on the SPD-SX link and DOWNLOAD THE FRICKIN' DRIVER FROM THEM!!! Its right there on their website. Sure, it may not come out of the box with the driver. But chances are if you're contemplating getting/using this unit, you're pretty familiar with its capabilities as a sampler trigger ... and realize the drivers/versions get updated frequently and you need to be diligent with checking that out. This is a great unit for any band looking to implement more synth/sampling capability in their band. I've worked with 2 drummers now who've had these units (my current one with this unit and a previous drummer who had the SPD-S). It opens up possibilities for your band that are not possible unless you start delving into the world of MIDI sequencing. Certainly worth the investment but I agree w/Earl that the price will likely come down considerably soon so I'd wait for then to purchase.

                Roland SPD-SX

                By Erick Garcia

                from Houston

Comments about Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad:

I've owned the SPD-S since it came out and it was an awesome sampler! It worked great for me live and in the studio. I just picked up the new SPD-SX about a month ago and right off the bat it was easy for me to dive in and navigate around. I exported all my wave files from the SPD-S and imported them into the new SPD-SX with no problem. I haven't used it live yet however I can see how the new display and illuminated buttons will help out when light settings are low. Pad check is awesome! Quick menus are cool. I can also now setup a click and send it out via a selection of different outs which will work great live. I can send the click signal out to the band for their ears only via a sub out! Over all I'm impressed and I can see I'm gonna have lots of fun with it. Oh! And the preloaded sounds that come with it are great!
A little on the pricey side of things... but well worth the buy.
