I love this unit BUT you need to know two things upfront before you buy: The manual is a huge challenge to understand because you have to flip from one page to the next page to complete simple basic operations. BUT more than that, the Compact Flash Cards CAN ONLY BE 512MB OR SMALLER!!!! Try finding those in the stores now. YOU're NOT GOING TO FIND ONE!!!! You will have to order online IF you find an online supplier that has stock. Roland needs the send an update because they are falling behind on this. Oh and by the way, Roland does not sell Compact Flash Cards as an accessory. Too bad!

If you want to take this home and just start using this in your music then you might not want this particular product. This drum pad is nice but it takes a considerable amount of time to understand the manual and figure out how to program preset sounds to open slots. Overall it has been a good tool after the initial manual mumbo jumbo.

USE THIS FOR BASS DROPS LIVE

By Zain Haq

from Sugar Land, texas

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

I've found that a lot of us drummers in death core and metal core never find anything out about what we're (probably) buying this for, which is live bass drops, booms, 808, subs etc. First of all what you need to know is the spd-s does not have these drops built in. 2nd you are going to have to find bass drops online and learn how to download them. 3rd you will either need a card read for the CF card to put the sounds on, or you need an aux chord with a converter plug on one end for the pad and the other end going into your computer to record the sounds on your pad manually. You will basically always be in patch mode. If you want to trigger your bass drum or something you set it up exactly like the bass drops. But sometimes you will have a problem with the triggers stopping the samples off the pad. It will cut them short. This is very difficult to figure out how to fix, so much so that i just messed around and made it work and have no idea how i did it. Other than that I love this pad and love the abilities it gives me live. Definitely invest it, because it is THE BEST way to do live bass drops

Compact Flash Card

By Eric Bates

from Augusta, Ga

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

First, I wanna say that this Roland product is great! It's definitely been a good investment, but the issue with the flash card, maybe it's because I just got it but I went to Wal Mart and bought a 4GB scan disk ultra Compact Flash Card and once I formatted it, I had no problem using it, so I don't see where people are having these issues with the external memory card. Go try it out if you don't believe me, let me know what issue you run into. Thanks and that is all

Great Compliment To Real Drums

By Brent

from Stockton, CA

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

First off I would like to say that anyone buying a multi-pad sampler and expecting it to be exactly like a real drum is asking for the moon. Or a Mandala Drum. So go get that instead. For the rest of us humans that need a good sampler pad to trigger a drum set's worth of sounds, loops, or whatever in a small and neat package, this is the way to go. Hands down! It has onboard effects, you can sample right in it, or trigger midi. With the foot pedal jacks, you can have an entire compact electro kit right there. I can be a one man band with this thing! The downside is the Compact Flash cards used exclusively and expandability is limited by 512mb as a maximum, and for this I give a 4. Other than that it's a great box.

Very Cool and Easy to Use

By Sean the Drummer

from Portland Ore

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

I thought I would need a whole rack of gear to do what this little 5 Lb beauty does and it's so simple to operate. totally makes it possible to include studio tricks recorded on cd's live in small clubs triggered buy me from behind the drum kit. think intros(like rain and thunder) and endings (like honking horns and a car crash) or sampled sounds during songs (like a gunshot in place of snare note )as well as a whole plethora of other percussion sounds I am very stoked about this purchase

Amazing!

By mrdrproffesor

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

I love this product! I was kinda unsure about this product at first but once i started getting a hang of it and actually sampling stuff i thought it was the greatest thing ever! The sensitivity on it really isn't a big problem for me.. Neither was having the compact flash card. You can find one on amazon.com... Without the compact flash card you only get about 30 seconds of sampling... so make sure you get a card!

Awesome piece from Roland Pad Products...!!

By Cool Drummer

from Denver, CO

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

I bought this kit 5 months ago and it really rocks!! I use it everyday from using metronome to some great sample patches. The pad quality is too good and the sensitivity is amazing!! You can edit the sensitivity by editing the settings. Reading manuals is not that tough but actually if you have some "common sense" you wouldn't need any manuals for basic operations. Of course it is not ready to play system, in matter of fact none of electronic products :) The two different sounds from a single pad is amazing and very helpful if you have to play more notes and sounds without changing patches. I have bought KD 8 kick pad and connected it as a trigger and it is great too... The only cons I dont like it in SDP S is the memory capacity, you can only use upto 512mb compact memory flash card and it would not support more than that... I cant understand why Roland provide with more memory capable one?? I hope when this product released there were compact flashes in GBs... So if just beginner/intermediate/moderate users can use this, but an advanced player would have to seriously consider this... The sound quality, pad quality, pad sensitivity, and all other features like sampling, phraser are really great and you would definitely not be disappointed. I would definitely recommend this awesome product!!

Compact Flash card for SPD-S

By TD

from Florida

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

Roland has an update software ver.1.20 for your SPD-S to accept an 1GB and up CF card but you still need to get a 512MB (or less) to do the update. After that, SPD-S will recognise the large CF card ..this make it easy for us to go buy the large card locally but it doesn't matter how many GB your card is, the SPD-S limit itself to read or write at 512MB max..

You Can't Beat the SPD-S (Well, Actually You Can!)

By Michael Trig Lehmann

from Buffalo, New York

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

In my group "STRANGERinSIDE", our performances are focused on our instruments due to being an all instrumental ProgRock band. I have been getting heavily into sampling and looping, and for that Roland's SPD-S more than fits the bill. Since we write extensively, creating my own samples has greatly expanded my creativity and given us a very unique sound. And, as a guy, I too don't like reading manuals. I mastered this puppy in about a week. One of the most exciting features is recording your own samples from CD's, microphones, and otherr music sources like my keyboard. Your creativity will soar with the SPD-S. And while it is true that the CompactFlash memory cards can be no higher than 512 MB, and are impossible to find in local retail stores, they are abundant and reasonable on-line.

GREAT but not perfect

By Bobby Jackson

from baltimore

Comments about Roland SPD-S Sampling Percussion Pad:

i was very excited upon buying my SPDS Sampler..the endless possibilities i had heard about made me very eager to buy it..and as a touring/session drummer the exansion of electronics in one small device blew my mind and i had to have it..so i bought it and loved and making drum loops in reason..ableton and pro-tools i was excited to put them on there..so i went to do so..and the main memory on it was ridiculously small..so i went and bought a 2 gig compact flash memory card..thinking i could put so much stuff on there..well surprisingly enough it didnt work..so i pulled out the manual and read its only compatible with 512 megs or smaller..so alot like the other guys that wrote reviews..i love it..all except the memory card issue..and you will HAVE to find a 512 meg compact flash card online because you wont find it in any stores! hope this helps!
