Overview

The RD-800 was designed for fast, effortless operation while playing on stage. Live Sets allow you to store prepared setups including tone layers, keyboard split points, effects, and much more for quick recall via dedicated buttons while performing. For those times when you need to call up and modify sounds on the spot, it's a breeze to dial things in quickly. The panel features a logical layout and dedicated controls, and it's extremely simple to accomplish essential tasks such as selecting and layering tones, setting split points and adjusting effects. The color LCD provides an inviting interface for manipulating parameters in any lighting condition, and all panel knobs have LED indicators that make it easy to see current settings on dark stages.

Authentic grand piano sounds designed for the stage
The RD-800 features a large selection of grand piano sounds to suit any style, from solo performing to ensemble playing. There are 5 acoustic piano types and 34 variations to choose from, including a new Concert Grand tone derived from Roland's flagship V-Piano Grand which features enhanced presence for cutting through in live situations. A newly developed upright piano is also provided, offering the unique short decay and up-close sound of a traditional upright instrument. Powered by Roland's acclaimed SuperNATURAL Piano engine, the RD-800 delivers a truly authentic acoustic piano experience with seamless tonal color changes, natural note decay, and authentic key range behavior.

Customize piano sounds to suit a performance venue or your personal style
With the RD-800, you have an incredible amount of control to shape any piano sound to your liking. The onboard Piano Designer lets you easily adjust overall tonal elements with familiar piano-oriented parameters such as string resonance, key-off resonance, hammer noise, and many others. Even deeper control is available with Individual Note Voicing, which allows you to adjust the pitch, level, and tonal character independently for all 88 notes. In addition to personal tone shaping, this unique voicing option is also useful for balancing the overall piano sound to perfectly suit the venue you're performing in. When a SuperNATURAL Piano tone is selected, the Tone Color knob is automatically assigned to control the sound width, allowing you to easily adjust the output from full stereo to mono to suit any situation. Of course, all your custom settings can be stored as Live Sets for instant recall during your performances.

Vintage electric piano tones reproduced to perfection
In addition to authentic acoustic pianos, the RD-800 includes a variety of newly enhanced SuperNATURAL-based electric pianos representing classic instruments from the ˜60s, ˜70s, and ˜80s. You can select among 5 types and 56 variations, and then fine-tune a sound in great detail with parameters like mechanical key on/off noise, key off resonance, damper noise, and many others. With the Tone Color knob, you can even morph seamlessly between two different electric piano models or tones to create all-new sounds. Great effects are available for enhancing your EP sounds, including a number of tremolo variations, an authentic phaser, and an amp simulator (with several speaker types) to achieve accurate vintage distortion characteristics.

Set your inspiration free with unparalleled touch response
If you're looking for the finest keyboard action available in a stage piano, the RD-800 is an easy choice. Roland's new flagship PHA-4 Concert Keyboard with Escapement and Ebony/Ivory Feel includes the latest touch-detection technology, allowing you to fully explore the deep tonal potential of the SuperNATURAL-powered acoustic and electric pianos. With high-resolution sensing and lightning-fast response, the PHA-4 accurately translates into sound the subtlest differences in tone from different playing styles and dynamics. Additionally, the keys are finished with specially developed materials that have moisture-absorbing properties, providing the natural texture and tactile sensation of real ivory and ebony keys on a fine acoustic grand.

Additional sounds for maximum versatility on stage
Going far beyond piano tones, the RD-800 offers an enormous variety of additional sounds to expand your versatility for live gigs. With over 1,100 tone variations available, you're sure to find just the right sounds to suit any genre or performing situation. 10 different Virtual Tone Wheel organs are on board, as well as a SuperNATURAL-based clav, a wide range of vintage keyboards, and up-to-date synth sounds for modern music styles. The RD-800 also includes powerful master MIDI keyboard features for playing and controlling external sound sources on stage or in the studio.

Studio-quality effects with real-time controls
Included in the RD-800 is a large selection of simultaneous effects with dedicated real-time controls for processing and enhancing your sounds as you play. Rich ambience is available with the reverb and delay effects, while the Modulation FX section offers a choice of 56 diverse effects types. The Tremolo and Amp Simulator section includes a number of tremolo and amp types for electric pianos, a rotary effect for authentic organ tones, and more. There's also a dedicated five-band equalizer for shaping your sound, and four controls that can be assigned to control a variety of parameters of your choosing. In addition, the unique and powerful Tone Color knob allows you to dramatically alter many sound aspects optimized for different tone categories with a single control, such as widening or narrowing the stereo image, morphing between two different sounds, or boosting the presence to cut through a dense mix.

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

I have been searching for the past 20 years or so for the most realistic digital piano sound that I could find, and with the RD-800 I feel I am closer to my goal. Before this I had Yamaha P-250 which I used as a controller for various computer-based software piano sounds. Probably my favorite was Ivory II but I also have Galaxy and Garritan Pianos. I was not fond of going through the computer for the sound as I always had glitches, occasional unwanted clicks and dropouts, along with very slight but almost barely perceptible latency. Although I liked the sound better than the onboard Yamaha piano, I was never really satisfied with the result.

I must say that the Roland piano sound in my opinion is a step above both the Yamaha and the computer based software. Although I am not 100% satisfied, the Roland supernatural piano sound with its sympathetic resonance comes closest in my opinion to the real thing, especially after tweaking the sound with the available controls. The action of the keyboard is much lighter and easier than the Yamaha and I find I can be more expressive. I am an avid amateur but I feel like an accomplished musician on this keyboard. I have a Yamaha acoustic upright and I would rather play the RD-800.
Of course a few months ago I played my cousin's restored Steinway baby grand and realized that is the sound I am searching for. The sound was absolutely exquisite, but recognizing the fact that I can never own one, at less than 1/10th the price and a tiny fraction of the room I am happy with the Roland.

If you play this in the store I recommend bringing your own set of quality headphones to appreciate the sound. If I judged the unit by the sound from the small monitors it was hooked to I never would have bought it.

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

I decided on the Rolland RD 800 after many hours of review of the other comparable stage pianos on the market. I was not disappointed in any way with the results once I got the unit home. The action feels very similar to the baby grand I own and the sounds that are produced are amazing. I set it up next to my 1972 Rhodes and it sounds even better! The grand pianos, layering options, and tone control are all easy to use and functional. Out of the box it's great! I can't wait to learn more about the things I can do. Thanks Guitar Center and Rolland!

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

I must add to my previous latest comments reviewing the Roland RD 800 digital keyboard. Not all of the voices and sounds are good. Roland has a drum kit section; which is not necessary, in my opinion....for a keyboard player in a professional setting...in addition, with further investigations...not all of the voices and sounds are good or of any good use. However, as one explores this keyboard, one will discover quite a bit of useable sounds with exceptional sound qualities.....other than, those I have commented on....such as the acoustic pianos, electric pianos, strings, bass, and organs. Some of the pad and synthesized sounds
are excellent and with a good imaginized charged composer, the possibilities are unlimited....for the electronic music venue. The right choices for the traditional instruments are excellent...such as within the
vibraphone section, which carried me away, I could not stop playing....along with the pad/synthesizer section. I am a person of integrity with all that I do and speak....thusly, I have added these further comments...and taken the time do present as such. Neverthless, overall, this Roland RD 800 digital keyboard is outstanding; outside of the negative comments; and I stand firm on my other positive comments about it. It is an excellent and outstanding digital keyboard for all the purposes stated.

PS Please read my previous comments under cosmicsurfer007 listing. Tks.

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

I must add to my previous review comments. I originally got this keyboard based on acoustic piano sounds; however, as I have begun to explore the various voices or instruments contained within this incredible keyboard....I was compelled to comment further. BELIEVE THIS OR NOT.....all the voices or instruments are beyond excellent. I was playing the vibraphones voices and was completely carried away. All voices or instruments are excellent. That is it... EXCELLENT!!! All of them....to include the acoustic piano sounds, strings, electric piano sounds and further. The Pad section will carry you out of this world, for sure. All voices and instruments have clean real and clear sounds. This is completely amazing me.

If you are looking to own and play an outstanding digital keyboard....the Roland Rd 800 is it....do not waste your time looking and hearing else where. One reason, I am here making these comments...more than twice.

You big concert rock bands guys, etc. Demand the Roland Rd 800 keyboard for rent out....and talk with the sound tech where your band is playing at. Super sounds, for sure.
      Recording studios....add this one.

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

These are comments in addition to my most recent review of the Roland RD 800 nx digital keyboard.
I ran out of review space. I must add...the sound system that one runs this keyboard thru for sounding is
important. I recommend using high quality powered speakers...and in this case, be sure to listen thru both speakers, not just one....this is an important procedure. Going thru a powered mixer and passive speakers
will be okay...same results. Be sure to zero out at the mixer...and at the speaker settings...in both situations. My review comments are based on the keyboard going thru to two JBL Eon 515 speakers directly fm the keyboard to the powered speakers via guitar sytle cables...although, I could have used
XLR type cable hook ups...there might be a hairline difference in sounds here. However, my review was
based on the standard guitar type cables....and with this, the keyboard sounds excellent as I haved reviewed it. With all musical instruments, played on a larger scale; such as an outdoor venue, sound
systems qulaity do come into play....along with sound technician expertise or lack of none.
For more intimate situations...such as studio, recording, and home environments...what you hear in
those high quality speakers will be what it is. The Roland RD 800 Nx digital keyboard is an exceptional
one. Try it, you will like or love it's professional abilities.

On the other end...with the great big time band concerts worldwide...these guys rent out instruments. I know...I know a guy that rents outs everything that has to do with doing an outdoor big concert happenning. It costs less to rent; rather than ship your own instrument to the location....except for the guitarists. Drums, too. As, an musician....this situation would drive my wild.

Okay....sound system is important....that is my main point here. Be sure to play back this keyboard
thru the best sound system you can get a hold of. Bottom line....the RD800 is pretty much perfect
      in many respects.

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

After many hours and months of investigation into digital piano sounds and actual acoustic piano sounds...actually playing acoustic grand pianos and googling the major piano manufacturers on line....
Yamaha, Steinway and the Bosendorfer acoustic pianos...I decided on trying out the Roland RD800 NX,
Originally, I purchased the 300 NX; but, it need lots of sound editing to get the piano sound I liked, based
on my investigations, as mentioned. Thusly, I exchanged the 300 for the 800 model....I have no regrets.
I did consider the Yamaha CP4, the Kurzwiel Artiste model. I also, have owned two Korgs, including the
Kronos....nice sounding; but lots of flat keys during scale runs. We are talking fine line....hair line differences; but, for me the Roland RD 800 is that keyboard for me after all that months of research...no regrets. The electric, organ, and string voices are superb. All out of the box. Every voice, including the pianos...can be further edited and saved as an instrument by it self. Out of the box...still, the sounds for
pianos, etc....are right on. Keyboard sensitivity is excellent. Electric pianos are crisp and clean, great for
stage and big concert venues...working with the sound techs...helps however. As an in home piano...
it is perfect!!! In my opinion, Roland has upped the bar in digital keyboard manufacturing, for sure...with
the RD800 model. I highly recommend purchasing the Roland RD800 NX digital keyboard. I was considering this one with the Yamaha CP4....I am happy that I choose to try out the RD800 prior to a
further exchange for the CP4. The RD 800 is a sturdy built all metal casing keyboard; which is good to
have. A bit heavy....but, what a great keyboard. Try it....you will like it...for sure.
Piano sound is heavy and dark, on the on set....much like the Bosendorfer...but, if you like the Yamaha or
Steinway acoustic sounds.....you can still edit the presented piano sounds to your likeing without much
      trouble.

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

Roland's weighted key action and the faux ivory feel of the key surfaces is the best place to start with this keyboard, because that's where you make the contact that makes the music. The feel can not be beat. The sound library is bigger than on the 700 series, especially the electric pianos and organs. Navigation is similar to prior series, and ultimately easier because of the detailed (but not complicated) display. Weighs a little less than previous series, and looks updated and modern on stage. If you like Roland's piano sounds and responsive key action, you will LOVE the new 800 series.

Excellent piano sound and very nice key action

          By Alfonso

          from Texas

Comments about Roland RD-800 Digital Piano:

This 5 star review includes the service I got from Guitar Center. I am very pleased with this product. It's been a month since I bought this Roland RD-800 and I am very glad I bought it. I am a piano player and also like to play synths. As an acoustic piano user and clavinova clp-150 owner for many years I was looking for a second piano, portable but with better key action and great piano sound. I didn't want the synth/piano approach for this particular purchase because I wanted something that came with the best piano sound and key action possible in this price range - for my piano solo music - so that put the only synth/piano consideration that I had made out of my price range, the Nord Stage 2. I narrowed down my search (through the web) to the CP4 and the RD-800 which I tried in the store. To my surprise the RD-800 was an easy decision; better key action, better feel, better sound, better materials and modern looks. Someone in the store said "that's why Rolands are Rolands", and now I agree and this is now my second Roland keyboard. My decision to buy the RD-800 was based on the good balance of price, low weight, modern looks, key action and the most important, the sound. I have to admit that after the purchase when I set up the Roland in my house and played it for a few days I was even more impressed with the key action feel which is very good but most importantly with the quality of the piano sound which is incredibly realistic and well balanced throughout the whole keyboard, I rarely have to adjust the piano sound to get a nice balanced sound but if I need to all the dedicated knobs are right there for instant access. I don't have to struggle with the lower-mid range section getting muddy - which is something I've seen in many portable pianos - I like the color screen and modern board layout, with lighted buttons. I don't really care much about sounds other than the piano but when I went through the sound library the electric pianos sounded better in the CP4. I was concerned about amplification/sound at home since this can be a real issue when trying to get the good piano sound out of the keyboard so I bought a pair of yamaha's HS7 with the RD-800. The sound of the roland RD-800 is so good and enjoyable through this speakers that I don't have to use the headphones that much. In summary I consider the RD-800 a quality product, well built very good key action and excellent piano sound. My gear: Motif XF8, Jupiter 80 and now the RD-180.
