Overview

The Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup is the ultimate MIDI pedal for guitars. Ever wanted to thicken up your guitar sound with a warm synth pad? Or how about a screaming lead sound that puts you in front? The GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer makes playing high-quality synthesizer and instrument sounds from your guitar as simple as 1-2-3. First, attach the included GK-3 Divided Pickup to your steel-stringed electric (no drilling necessary). Second, select the type of sound you want using the Bank knob. Third, choose a sound variation using the Number/Value dial and start playing. With the GR-20, it's easy to tap into the power of guitar synthesis.

Guitar Synth or Compact Pedal?

With the GR-20, it feels like both. Selecting a sound is like choosing an effect. First, select a sound category using the Bank knob. Categories include Strings/Orchestral, Wind, Brass, Bass/Guitar, Organ/Keyboard, Piano, Synth/Lead, Voice/Pad, Ethnic, and Rhythm/Percussion. Now you can select individual sounds using the Number/Value dial.

Roland's Finest Sounds with Exceptional Tracking

At the heart of the GR-20 is an advanced sound engine based on Roland's professional synthesizers. Sounds can be played with up to 48-voice polyphony for full, rich-sounding patches. And the sounds are equally impressive. From expressive string ensembles to spiritual tabla loops coupled with sitar--all with adjustable attack and release. Sophisticated DSP makes the GR-20's pitch detection ultrareliable, so you can strum with confidence.

Take Your Guitar Playing Further

Want to create a sound that's all your own? Try blending the natural sound of your guitar pickups with the GR-20. Thankfully, the GK-3 Divided Pickup makes this easy via a larger and smoother knob. Imagine playing chords and then slowly fading in a swirling, breathy pad to create intensity. Or how about playing a distorted lead on your guitar with a thick synth lead sound? Now take this a step further with the GR-20's Patch Link function. It allows you to easily assign GR-20 patches to match effect patches in MIDI-capable processors such as the BOSS GT-6.

Includes the GK-3 Divided Pickup

When you buy a GR-20, you also get a GK-3 Divided Pickup and GK cable in the box. In other words, everything you need to start playing synth sounds is included! The GK-3 is 30% thinner than its predecessor, and it now uses a 1/4" jack for normal guitar input. The pickup includes an adjustable curve design to keep an even distance between the strings for better response (the pickup cable length is also adjustable). Owners of LP-type guitars can install the GK-3 pickup safely using a special attachment plate included in the box.

Features
  • Affordable guitar synthesizer with new sounds, easy interface, and GK-3 pickup

Hi All! I play in a small band and when i got this and messed around for a bit, I was astonnished. The 2 best song i use it on is Pink Floyd comfortably numb. add strings and keys for the rhythum player (me), let the lead player do the rest and WOW. jaws drop when we do this song with this. Also Mustang sally with the sax Drves crowds nuts. it gives a band a fuller sound like there are more pieces.

The synth sounds are decent, but the synth produces a lot of noise. The worst part is the pick up. I had the pick up professionally installed so I know it was my installation of the pick up. The pick up is shotty and doesn't pick up all the sounds accurately or at an even level. Different strings will pick up better than others.

This Little Baby Cooks

By L.

from VA

Comments about Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup:

I use to own the Roland GR-1 the granddaddy of them all which has the 200 sounds and the multi-recorder built in it. But it was stolen from me back in 2006 after moving out of an apartment. I just bought the GR-20 and even though I don't have the 200 sounds of the GR-1, Roland has really made this little baby cook. They really out did themselves this time.

Comments about Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup:

I bought my roland gr-20 just 4 months ago, and I'm still learning how to use it, I haven't even used every sound yet. There's alot too it, more than there's in the manual. Overall so far it's been amazing. The only trouble was paying someone to put it on my guitar.

A Dream Come True

By Rick Kelly

from Chicago

Comments about Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup:

I have had this thing for two days now and I have not slept for two days! I love this thing. It is perfectly designed for the guitar player in every way. It looks and operates like a multi-effects pedal and is just as easy to use. I was able to attach the GK-3 pickup to my Les Paul by myself in about an hour including restringing the guitar; all brackets with no permanent mounting. I must add that I am in no way a guitar-tech kind of guy and I had it up and working with in an hour of opening the box. The sounds and tracking are amazing. The sax sounds are incredible and it has a very cool distorted guitar sound like Jay Oliver uses in Crazy Horse on Dave Weckl's Hard Wired album. It has horn sounds like the ones that Pat Metheny uses and effects like reverb and chorus that really give the sounds depth. I have always wanted to play the same synth sounds that Chick Corea and Jay Oliver use on keyboards on my guitar. (I also always wished I had learned to play the sax.) This unit is a dream-come-true for me. It tracks every solo and chord change that I throw at it. I am going to be using this on my new recording project. I can't recommend this thing enough!

So close to perfect

By Kaleb Shadeaux

Comments about Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup:

I got the GR-20 for christmas this year and it's truly the most amazing piece of equipment i have in my arsenal of toys. I love the way you can plug your external effects processor into it and mix the sounds of a violin or a piano with it. My only complaint is that when you tremolo pick it doesn't pick up every note and when you tap it doesn't pick it up at all. It doesn't for me anyway. All in all though it's a great product with aton of sounds and easy way to use midi for people that can't play a piano/keyboard.

Important! read this first.

By Bobby Biggs

from fredericksburg V.A.

Comments about Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup:

the gr-20 is fantastic.. the gk3 pickup tracks perfect.. it even has dynamic to your playing technique.. i have had it for a month now.. i installed the pickup my self (i know very little about installing hardware) after carefully reading the instructions and setting it up to specs i am very happy with my purchase! i have read mixed review on the gr-20 and gk3. but any complaints i have read i know that i could fix for anyone.. just read the instructions, they are very simple and to the point.. the only flaw in this equipment that i have found is that it is fragile.. i am used to the durability of digitech products and the plastic that this is made of is not the highest grade.. but for the money this is amazing! there are more sounds than you will ever need and it is user friendly. i would like to thank Nate in Fredericksburgs guitar center for helping me and pointing me in the right direction! this is worth buying if you are doing experimental music or just want to play around for fun and is GREAT for recording.

Extraordinary Guitar Synch

By 12StringPicker

from Carrollton, GA

Comments about Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup:

I have played a GR-33 for years and loved it. I now play 3 GR-20s along with my GR-33 with floor switching etc... The GR-20 has much better Synth selections, it is easier to navigate, and the sounds are much stronger. Keep in mind that I play a Godin Multiac ... a guitar designed to play the Roland Synths.

gr20 is a challenge but worth it

By kabinoaction

from Houston

Comments about Roland GR-20 Guitar Synthesizer with GK-3 Divided Pickup:

I was able to get the best tracking with heavier strings (13's or bigger) and I could adjust each string sensativity for balance. I realy miss the tracking speed of my old gr300 but once I got used to the gr20 it was easy to use. I wish all the parameters could be programmed to customize but I get good sound with a little effects added. overall, it's a great tool and fun to experiment with.
