Roland rewrote guitar-tech history with the debut of COSM technology, which first appeared on the pioneering VG-8 guitar-modeling system. Today, the new G-5 infuses a coveted Fender Stratocaster with advanced features realized by Roland's COSM technology. In addition to offering all classic Stratocaster sounds and functionality, the G-5 provides a new world of electric and acoustic guitar tones recreated by COSM - including instantly accessible alternate tunings and 12-string sounds for all COSM guitar tones! The G-5 also offers a built-in library of coveted modeled pickup tones, and, thanks to COSM technology, also enables unique "ideal-performance" pickups, such as a humbucker with ultra-wide tone and a single coil with full, bold tone.

Stratocaster with VG engine
Born through a combination of Roland's latest guitar modeling technology and Fender's traditional Stratocaster, the G-5 is a guitar overflowing with creative possibilities. With COSM guitar modeling onboard, the G-5 lets you create custom instruments virtually, including different guitar body shapes, pickup types, and tunings. COSM is what allows this guitar to reproduce the sounds of a Telecaster in perfect detail, or humbucker pickups, or acoustic guitars. COSM can also take you to creative places never imagined, into sonic realms that have been impossible to reach with traditional electric guitars.

Divided pickup dramatically enhances expression
In addition to normal Stratocaster pickups, this model comes with divided pickup that realizes new possibilities for guitar. This pickup transmits signals from each string individually, and is capable of accurately capturing performance information for each individual string. In addition to capturing the performance techniques and nuances characteristic of guitars, such as bending, vibrato, and hammering, the divided pickup also enables an entirely new level of performance through COSM.

From traditional guitar sounds to the unimagined
The G-5 comes with five different modes: Normal Stratocaster, Modeled Stratocaster, Telecaster, Humbucking Pickups, and Acoustic. With its five-way switch, you can create tonal variations with different pickup combinations from any of these modes. In addition, the G-5 enables tonal options that are not available on traditional electric guitars, including Wide Range (which gives you a fat tone while maintaining the wide range of single coil pickups) and Bright Humbucker (that delivers highs that cut through while maintaining the rich mids and lows hat are characteristic of humbuckers). You can also enjoy the sounds of Jazz Guitar and Electric Sitar in acoustic mode, all from a single guitar.

G-5 Tone List
N - Normal Stratocaster
Neck (single coil); Neck + Middle (single coil); Middle (single coil); Bridge + Middle (single coil); Bridge (single coil)

S - Modeled Stratocaster

Instantly retune to alternative tunings
The G-5's Tuning function lets you instantly retune to alternative tunings such as Drop D, Open G, D modal, and Baritone at the turn of a knob. You can switch to a variety of alternative tunings without touching the tuning pegs or switching to another guitar, keeping your string tensions unchanged. A 12-string guitar mode is also provided, which you can use with both acoustic and electric guitar sounds.

Fast and easy control
The G-5 is as easy to use a regular electric guitar. After you plug in your guitar cable, all you have to do to set your tone is turn the Mode and Tuning knobs, and set the five-way switch. It's fast and friendly to use yet feature-filled and powerful.

I love this thing!

from Ottawa, Ontario

Comments about Roland G-5 Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I bought my G-5 a little over half a year ago, and I'm totally satisfied. It's actually STRANGE to be a guitarist who no longer pines for additional guitars! The different sounds are really good, and I usually only take the ONE guitar to gigs now. The one "mod" I performed was to install a DC jack on the rear of the guitar so that I feed it 6VDC from a large gel cell battery on my belt, rather than worrying about replacing 4 "AA" batteries on a regular basis. (My band often does 4-set-long gigs) It's great to be able to play jazz, pop, rock and acoustic songs without switching guitars. The only time I ever use a second guitar is when I have a REALLY heavy song followed by a very light acoustic one. Then, I like to have the option of switching immediately to a second guitar without having to take time to re-tune the G-5. It doesn't go far out of tune with heavy play, but I'm very picky about tuning being dead on. (As I say to our rhythm guitarist, "tune or die"!)

Great all in one guitar

from Bryan, Texas

Comments about Roland G-5 Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I finally broke down & bought this guitar. I had wanted one when the American version came out a few years back, but couldn't justify the price at the time. However, this guitar (MIM) doen't have to take a back seat to anyone. Just from the Strat standpoint alone, it plays, feels, and sounds good enough to compete with my USA Strat. A previous reviewer was knocking the guitar because of no digital output (to drive a synth, etc.) But this guitar is designed to take the place of hauling 2 or 3 guitars to a job, and for that, it gets great kudos. I also have the Roland ready Strat to drive my GR33 guitar Synth. They both do what each are designed to do, very well. The VG has American tuners and the intonation was set very well straight off the cuff. I would have given 5 stars if it had come with a hard case. Who wants to pay over a grand for a good guitar and get a gig bag to transport it in? The guitar gets 5 stars, but the manufacturer gets one to two, for being cheap with providing a gig bag. (C'mon, you moved the plant to Mexico to get cheaper labor, at least give us a good, hard case) BTW, the 12 string sounds very impressive, the Tele & Strat Modeling are pretty good. Noticed a slight power drop when in the modeling mode, but my GT-10 takes care of that. Humbucker is decent, although I'm not a HB guy, and the acoustic is weak. I play mostly Country, Gospel, & Blues, so the Sitar setting is useless to me, but may be useful to someone else. Finish and craftsmanship very good with this guitar. It's worth getting before they quit making them again. I had looked at the Variax and was considering it, but, even with the modeling and various tuning aside, you still have a good looking, good playing Strat with this guitar. That counts enormous IMHO. This guitar sounds good thru a tube amp or a solid state either. The Roland Ready Strat sounds better through a solid state when driving a synth. I bought the sunburst model and love it.

A modeling guitar for people who want to play guitar

from Cornersville, Tennessee

Comments about Roland G-5 Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have played the new VG and was so impressed that I am buying one as soon as I save up the money. The previous reviewer needs to check out the Roland ready Stratocaster if he wants the digital output option. This guitar is for people who wants a variety of sounds and tunings but don't want to have to change between multiple guitars to get them. This is a guitar for people who want to play guitar. This is an American Standard Stratocaster with a plethora of available instrument, tuning, and tone choices In normal mode, it is a regular Stratocaster with a good strat tone. With its modeling options, it is so much more. That being said, I gave it only 4 stars for two reasons. In modeling mode there is a slight drop in output. It would have been nice if modeling output were equal to normal mode output. My second reason is that for $1200, I would expect it to come with a hardshell case. It comes in a gig bag, so you have all these awesome technological options, and no hardshell case to protect it. Roland and Fender could do better.

Why no 13 pin output?

from Albuquerque, NM

Comments about Roland G-5 Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I cannot believe that they went to all the trouble to put all this great stuff on the guitar and then only put an analog output. There is a divided pick-up on the guitar but no way to get a digital output from it. Can they really think that people only want a few tones? Do they think that people who want a modeling guitar don't want midi output, don't want the ability to record tablature or music notation and don't want to connect a modeling guitar with a computer or digital effects box? Do they think people would connect a digital guitar with an analog stomp box panel rather than a synthesizer? I really hope they see the light and put the same kinds of connectors on this guitar as they do on the Roland Ready.
