High-end, few compromises

By Johnny Lenin

from Jersey City

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

I spent a couple of months shopping around before I settled on the Roland Fantom X6. I have been very impressed with Roland products in the past [my other synth in an SH-201] and the Fantom X6 had all of the features and quality I was looking for. My criteria were (1) the synth had to have authentic keyboard sounds -- particularly organs and electric pianos (2) the synth had to have an easy-to-use multipart sequencer (3) the syth had to have a good enough sampler so I could retire my old Korg ES-1 (4) it had to have decent rhythms (5) the synth had to be easy to use. I wanted it to replace an old combo organ, the ES-1, an old drum machine and hopefully my 8-track digital recording deck. The Fantom X6 hit #1 square on the head. The organ patches are excellent and the electric piano patches are generally very good. Also strong are the strings and some of the horn patches. Others, like the clavinets, are not very good. The slow synth pads are quite good, but the hard leads are not at all. In terms of #2, the sequencer is quite good. The real-time recording is very easy to use, and the step-recording is very accurate. More problematic is #3. Sampling is a bit of a complicated process. I like the simplicity of programming the ES-1, and the menu-driven Fantom X6 makes things a bit of a chore. Moreover, the stock memory is woefully inadequate for large-clip sampling [so is the ES-1's], and even with an additional 512 MB DIMM, I sometimes feel that memory is tight. As for #4, the rhythms are excellent and easy to use. The pads are touch sensitive and produce different tones at the center and edge. The tones are quite realistic and the variety of patterns extensive enough that I can use the presets without feeling that I'm repeating myself. [Besides, how many drummers have an infinite repertoire of patterns anyway?] In terms of #5... well, this is not an easy instrument to learn or to use. It comes with hundreds of pages of admitedly well-written documentation, but many functions are several menu layers deep. I would really like to see this synth with a laptop-style touchpad mouse. On the other hand, it's hard to expect an instrument this sophisticated to be exactly simple. The build quality is exception. This is an amazingly well-built, tough and giggable board. The upshot is that the Fantom X6 is [mostly] a pleasure to play, and I have already listed my Alesis SR-16 drum machine on E-bay. However, I find that I still need my ES-1 for rhythm samples and the 8-track for recording. The Fantom X6 simply does not have enough storage or memory to be able to record more than one complete audio track -- guitar or voice -- despite the fact that it had 8 audio tracks. On the whole, I think this is an exceptional instrument. I with it had as many front-panel real-time controls as the Yamaha Motif XS series. On the other hand, I do prefer the Roland patches.

The Fantom-X6--my nearly end-all solution

By Invetero

from Canton, MI

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

First of all, when I tried this at guitar center what attracted me was the LCD screen. At first, I had trouble figuring out many features, but the manual is plenty comprehensive. The learning curve is not steep, but the thing I love is I can produce most of my styles of music without any of the expansion kits on this board! I'm looking forward to buying the World Music expansion though. The sounds are all high quality, and with a few effects I can get nearly every sound I use. With its CompactFlash port, I often sample my acoustic instruments and use them in my recordings. The best thing? The sequencer is intuitive, the performance mode works well when I'm on stage, and the mix-in works well. It also comes with a free sample CD! On the down side, more simultaneous effects (there are only 3 plus a chorus and reverb at a time) and more editing features for samples would make it my standalone recorder/workstation, and I would never have to use my computer.

Great workstation!

By JorG

from Salt Lake City, UT

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

I have had this workstation for almost a year now. It it a great piece of machinery! With the built in audio expansion it allows you to record songs, even. Perfect equiptment if you do not have a computer, or great recording software. I have done a lot of electronica-styled music on this, but can easily do rock, classic, or pretty much any other style of music on it. The built-in sounds are great, and you can create sounds and/or alter them. Of course you have to spend a bit of time learning how use the keyboard and menu system, (I am still learning new a lot of new stuff). But the guides that come with it help you along greatly. Buy this product!

One of the best!

By Freddy G.

from Harrisburg, PA

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

I've had the phantom x6 for about 2 months now, and I already have 10 songs completed. It's so easy to record a full song. Once you get the copy and paste aspect down pact, the posibilities are endless. But you definitly will want to purchase some of the expansion packs. I have the Dance Proformance expansion pack and it was worth every penny I spent on it! Each song that I have created on this amazing piece of equipment, is better than anything I've heard from some of my favorite producers in the industry! Now I just have to figure out how to convert my songs onto a cd.

Great Product From Roland

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

I have had the Roland Fantom X6 for over a month now, and it has proven to be a great addition to our cover band lineup. The sequencing functions are very easy to use and understand. The sounds are generally pretty good on this model, although the synthesizer models could be more realistic. It's a great tool to give those extra sounds to your music! I definately recommend!!!

Powerful & Deep.

By Baxter

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

The Roland Fantom X6 is quite deep. I have been using the online tutorials provided on the Roland website and they have been helpful in orienting me. I mistakenly thought that the color LCD would make the machine a breeze to use but for some reason there are still confusing concepts with the user interface. That being said, this is the price of power and flexibility, and it is still easier to use than any of its competitors. The piano button is a godsend.

Best board since the W-30!!!!

By Giantman

from Jonesboro,GA

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

The Roland Phantom is the best board since the Roland W-30.I've been producing music for 20 years. For my entire production career my center piece has been the Roland W-30. For years i've sad Roland needs to make a successor to this board. The X-6 is a beast of beasts when it comes to following the W-30. I cosign this piece of equipment to anyone who wants an all in one producion center! The sounds and grooves that I get out of this board, most folks say they sound like several different producers using several different workstations. Thank you Roland for producing the best workstations on the market! Sinerely, die hard Roland user....Giantman Productions...

Very Realistic

By Jose Claudio

from Freehold, New Jersey

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

The fantom is the quickest way I produce. I call it the "All in one". Except for burning cd's. The only cons I would point out are the roland drums. It doesn't really have up to date drums sounds for Hip-Hop music. Don't get me wrong,it gives you the classic roland 808 kicks, claps and snares. But these days, any and everything has an 808 kit. I choose to use my own kit I organized by importing the one shots via usb cable. Other than that I'm very impressed with the realistic sounds of the acoustic instruments like the guitars and strings. You cant find authentic sounds on these instruments anywhere else.(except for the triton but that'll cost you a little more for the same quality. I give it 5 stars regardless of the drums issue because you should strive to be original anyway! It forced me to and actually helped

tha first and only keyboard i will own

By K.B

from st.paul mn

Comments about Roland Fantom-X6 61-Key Sampling Workstation:

i picked up tha fantom about 8 mounth ago. and i love it! this machine is awesome you have so many sounds to play with. and tha built in beat machine is sweet too! but whats even better is you have tha option to play your beat pattern on tha keys. one thing about tha fantom that you need to know is that you won't be able to save a song without getting a d.i.m.m board and a compact flash memory card. for about two hundred more. but once you get that you good as gold. burning your beat to c.d is pretty easy too. make your beat a audio sample save it in your keyboard go to your nero program boom there you go. with a little bit more opening folder in between. but for any artist no matter what type this keyboard is for you.
