Overview

The Roland EL Cajon EC-10 allows cajon players to easily enhance their music with layered electronic sounds. To start, the EC-10 is an authentic acoustic cajon that sounds great on its own. What’s more, it has Roland’s renowned electronic percussion technology built in, letting you blend a range of complementary sounds with the cajon voice, from traditional percussion like tambourine and shaker to acoustic snare, electronic drums, sound effects and more.

Completely self-contained with battery power and onboard amplification, the ELCajon EC-10 puts the dynamic world of hybrid percussion in the hands of every cajon enthusiast.

Thanks to its compact size and versatility, the cajon has become a popular instrument for on-the-go percussion, from local jams and street busking to nightclub performances and more. With a built-in Roland sound module and independent head and edge sensors, the EC-10 extends the cajon’s organic simplicity to open new dimensions of expression for any musical style. Spice up singer-songwriter and combo gigs with layered tambourine or djembe, add backbeats with an acoustic or TR-808 snare, or bring in some low-end thump with an electronic kick. Studio-optimized cajon sounds are also on hand to enhance the acoustic cajon voice for more depth, dimension, and punch.

The top-mounted sound controls on the EC-10 are designed for quick access and easy operation while playing. Dedicated buttons are used to scroll through sound categories, while neighboring buttons allow you to select a number of variations within a category. After that, just twist the rear-panel volume knob to control the level of the layered sound, and use the Trigger Balance knob to adjust the balance between the head and edge sounds. You can also tweak the trigger sensitivity for your personal style and touch.

Part of the cajon’s appeal is that it’s self-contained and uncomplicated. While the EC-10 contains high-tech electronics, it fully maintains the organic, go-anywhere vibe that cajon players love. The integrated amp and coaxial speaker provide high-quality sound for keeping up with acoustic and amplified instruments, and six AA batteries deliver up to 12 hours of power. There’s also a handy input for playing music from a smartphone or song player at home or on the gig. And because the EC-10 is a true acoustic instrument, you can always turn off the electronics and play it like any regular cajon.

Comments about Roland Electronic Layered Cajon:

I really wanted to like this cajon. I really did. So, I caved and ordered one for worship at my church - a small ensemble of acoustic guitar, piano, bass, cajon. The cajon works well when we are rocking along but struggles in the area of nuance. Because the amplified sound is just the triggered sound and not the actual cajon sound, what goes to the mains is very mechanical and produced sounding. When we play unplugged and you get a mix of acoustic cajon and the triggers, it sounds good.

I would easily recommend this for unplugged situations but the sound it sends out to the sound system just isn't good enough.

Additinally, only 2-3 of the sounds it makes are worth anything. Most sound as bad or worse than cheap electric drum samples.

    Comments about Electronic Layered Cajon:

Very cool cajon. Love the different sounds to play with and match to what I'm feeling. I connect it to my looper for playing guitar over. Also added a kick pedal and high hat which I 'attempt' to play while playing guitar. (still working on that) However, I wish it had an acoustic mic pickup. The output is only the digital sounds. Would prefer a mix of digital and acoustic sounds for a line out. One can mic it for this, but I wanted simplicity and something easy to patch in. Still pleased with it nonetheless. Love the idea, but just needs a built in mic to combine sounds.

Comments about Roland Electronic Layered Cajon:

Love the sounds and versatility, there are many uses for this instrument. The top sensor is much harder to activate than the one in the middle, is the only downside. Some cymbal sounds would have been nice, too, but I love it!

Comments about Roland Electronic Layered Cajon:

It is a very portable drum. You can play it as an acoustic cajon, or plug it in and get some great sounds through its internal speaker. It also can be plugged into an amp for some booming sound. It is an awesome instrument.

Comments about Roland Electronic Layered Cajon:

I am the drummer at Church and w/ the EL cajon I don't have to hit the box drum too hard now for me to hear what is played. I like the specified small area to strike the various beats. It sounds good having different layered sounds under or over my playing too! Eventually I will buy an amplifier to see how much it puts out but for now I'm quite satisfied using the batteries to play the cajon. To play, I sit it on my snare stand and sometimes use my old cajon along while playing. I am an older woman who prefers not to sit on top of the drum to lean over to play.....and the stand works well. Thanks to Roland for designing the electric cajon and for Guitar Center for placing the order!
