Combining the best of Roland engineering with Cakewalk's legendary ease-of-use, the A-800PRO has the features and feel you need to get the most out of your music performances and productions.
The feel of a Roland-quality instrument
When you perform with the A-800PRO, you're tapping into the benefits of over 30 years of Roland keyboard development. A superior key mechanism provides aftertouch and and increased sensitivity for a wide range of expressive dynamics in your performance. Rounded key assemblies offer responsive reaction to your touch and more comfortable glissando. Plus, enhancements have been made to eliminate vertical shake and reduce the already low mechanical noise on keystrokes. And with selectable Velocity curves you can fine tune the A-800PRO to match your playing style. No matter what your skill level, you'll appreciate the feel of a quality instrument when you play the A-800PRO.
Easy connections with side panel ports
The A-800PRO provides easy access connections on the side panel so that you can have a computer monitor or laptop in the ideal position behind the keyboard - a must for educational use. Connect USB, MIDI IN/OUT, Hold and Expression pedals without having to reach behind the keyboard.
Everything at your fingertips
The A-800PRO has been ergonomically designed to put everything at your fingertips. All controls are easily accessible and intelligently laid out to make performing and producing music an inspiring affair. Whether you're playing your favorite virtual instrument or working in your digital audio workstation, 9 knobs, 9 sliders, 4 buttons, and a dedicated Transport section offers fully assignable control of all the features you need. And the sure-grip, rubber-coated Pitch Bend/Modulation Stick offers expressive control of both functions at the same time. The A-800PRO Editor for Mac and PC makes it a breeze to customize the A-800PRO for use with your favorite synth or DAW. Just fire up the editor, adjust your Control Map, and hit transmit&…it's that easy. And when you're working with an ACT (Active Controller Technology) enabled DAW like SONAR, parameters will remap automatically, keeping you in the flow and focused on your music.
The A-800PRO puts 8 velocity sensitive Dynamic Pads right within your reach. Use these pads to trigger grooves, samples, or one shots on the fly with your favorite DAW, sampler, or virtual Instrument like the included Cakewalk Sound Center or Studio Instruments Drums. Use the Hold control to "latch" the pads. Or assign aftertouch, velocity, and controller data to pads for greater expression in your performance.
Ready to rock in studio or on stage
Whether you're live on stage in front an audience of screaming fans, or dimming the lights in the studio to capture a mood, you can always clearly see what you're doing with the A-800PRO's ultra-bright backlit LED display and buttons. And the A-PRO works with USB bus power, so if you have your laptop you're ready to make music anywhere.
FPT low-latency MIDI transmission
Don't trust your MIDI to anything else! The A-800PRO offers MIDI Transmission using Roland's proprietary FPT (Fast Processing Technology). You can rely on FPT for stable, high speed, low latency, and low jitter MIDI transmission. In layman's terms, that means that subtleties of your performance are going to be captured regardless of the music application you are using. And when working with virtual instruments, FPT provides lower latencies to give you the inspiring feel of playing a real instrument.
Production Plus Pack
The Production Plus Pack is a powerful suite of music creation software that ships with the A-800PRO. It includes SONAR 8.5 LE recording software (PC only) and three high-quality and versatile virtual instruments for Mac and PC: Rapture LE, Cakewalk Sound Center, and Studio Instruments Drums.

Christine's mistake is that she did not understand what a MIDI keyboard was when she bought it. She must have seen that it had keys and knobs and sliders and stuff, so it must be a synthesizer. MIDI keyboards and synthesizers are two entirely different things, however, much like how organs are entirely different from pianos. They both have white and black keys, but they do entirely different things. It just shows that doing good research always, always, always pays off when looking through expensive musical instruments. Unless you're a music producer or professional, you should never take for granted what something is just by looking at it, especially with electronic instruments. Anyway, onto the actual review part. I have had two other MIDI keyboards before this one: An Alesis Q49 and an M-Audio Keystation 88es. Of the three, this is my favorite keyboard on every level. For one, the keybed is simply the best I have felt. The keys are synth-action, which might not be to everybody's tastes, but for synth action keys, these are truly great. They are very responsive and smooth. (They might be a little TOO responsive for some, but you can change the velocity curve in the options so it's not a big deal if that is the case.) Now for the knobs and sliders. They are far and away the best I have felt on any keyboard. The knobs especially are incredibly sturdy and feel really, really, really nice to use. The sliders are also really good and sturdy. This keyboard and its controls are built to last. As is for every MIDI keyboard, they are complicated to manually assign, but very possible. The manual explains everything if you're willing to study it enough. The keyboard also comes with its own recording software and virtual instruments so you can start making music right away without the need of external software - although I highly recommend external software. There's a ton of fantastic virtual instruments and other audio software out there that you shouldn't miss out on if you're into this kind of stuff. All in all, this is a top tier MIDI keyboard and it does what it is trying to do perfectly.
Whoever wrote the 1 star review is not a professional musician. This is a MIDI controller and it's perfect it is powered via usb and you connect it to a DAW host to get sounds out, it does not come with speakers or internal sounds because it is a professional controller not a kid toy or beginner keyboard. it is great for what it was designed for.
This s a very good controller. It has the quality that Roland is known for. Doesn't have the pads like some controllers but if you bought this to drop beats like an 808, then you quit now. Works well with daws .
Don't let the other review mislead you on this great keyboard. Roland makes great equipment. This keyboard will control synthesizers and daw virtual synths. That's y it only has a usb chord because most people will use it directly with a pc or mac.
I felt it necessary to put in a review to compensate for the score the previous reviewer gave this midi keyboard controller. The keyboard is very good, and her score was based on not understanding what a "Midi Keyboard Controller" is. I understand that the term can be confusing to someone who is not familiar around musical instruments, but she should probably have asked an associate, or if buying it online, contacted them, and also searched for reviews. Youtube is also a good place to get an idea of the capabilities of musical instruments as well. I suppose GuitarCenter could go into all Midi Keyboard Controller pages and explicitly state "This does not create any sound by itself and needs a synthesizer or computer connected to make music".
I bought this gift online for my nephew and we were very disapointed, there is no power cable with the unit, only a USB cord. We found an adapter to plug the USB to get power but there was still no sound... Finaly we realized there are no internal speakers in this unit, therefore the unit is completly useless on it's own. Needless to say my Nephew was very disapointed with his christmas gift since he could not use the unit at all. Unfortunatly the description of the unit does not specify this, and there is nothing even in the recommended accessories to imply that the unit will not function. For the price this unit costs, you would expect it to work directly out of the box... We will be returning the unit and hopefully will find a system that can be completly functional on it's own.
