  • Perfect Beginner Set

As reviewed by Fred Vint on 11/25/2013

I have an 8 year old son who really started to get into playing his Yamaha 7 pad board. So instead of getting him a "real" kit that would drive his mother crazy, we went to Guitar Center and tried out this unit (as well as some much bigger Roland units) and he liked it. So we brought it home and set it up. I'm not a drummer, but he has taken to this kit and is getting pretty good. it is the perfect size and has enough sounds and options that it keeps him interested. He plays it everyday (and we've had it for nearly 8 months). While it was a little expensive, it was EXACTLY what this budding drummer needed to get better and keep his interest. It has heId up very well and am impressed with the quality and the one time I had to email tech support. I would recommend this to any beginner, especially a child if you can afford it.

  • One year later--a great kit for us

As reviewed by Sean on 11/23/2014

I did a lot of research last year about this time as I was trying to replace our acoustic kit to find something that was good quality, would fit in our smallish house, and not cost too much. We bought this kit at the Seattle GC after trying it out many times. After a year of use, we have only good things to say about it. The tradeoff with acoustic is unavoidable unless you want to pay more than a happy amateur--the feel is a different, but the possibilities vastly expanded with the variety of kits. I found that I played more this year than in many years in the past due to the fact that we could tuck the kit away in an easy to access area. I haven't taken the kit on the road much, but I suspect that will be coming next. The "coaching" features are excellent, and the module is easy to understand. It was very easy to "line in" from my iPhone and balance the kit and the songs I was learning. I'm sure other kits are nice too, but for the combination of quality, price, portability and simplicity, our first year with this kit was excellent.

  • Sound is great, but the pads need more rebound

As reviewed by Stephen on 7/17/2014

From a portability perspective the TD-4KP certainly delivers, just as the reviews I?ve read and those I watched on YouTube indicated. The sound they make is incredible, particularly given their modest size. From a playability standpoint however my opinion differs from most other reviewers. I find that I really have to ?work? to play this kit as it requires me to more actively ?pull? the sticks up off the pad rather than relying on the rebound. For the past few days I played them for about 20 minutes each time and felt a bit worn out. But my viewpoint may be skewed by what I?m used to. In addition to my acoustic kits I?ve played on mesh heads found on Roland?s TD-4, 9, 12 and 20 kits, each of which I?ve owned previously. I currently own a TD-30 with PD-125/PD-105 drum pads. But I?ve also played on Roland PD-8 rubber pads as well as other rubber practice pads and find them much easier to play than those on the TD-4KP. One other reviewer on the GC site said that ??the bass could be a little louder.? I found this to be true for most of the drum and cymbal pads. While wearing headphones I had to crank the volume up to at least 90% to get the volume where I wanted it which was not particularly loud. Therefore I adjusted the ?sensitivity? setting upwards on each pad which did help somewhat. But doing so reduces the velocity sensitivity range meaning that the linear dynamic range for each pad is reduced. In other words, striking a pad is either relatively quiet or relatively loud with not much difference in-between. Note that prior to making these changes I did a factory reset on the TD-4 module, but it didn?t make any difference in the volume. Primarily because of what I consider to be less than desirable rebound I plan to return the kit to GC. The other reason is the lack of volume and subsequent workaround I had to do with pad sensitivity adjustments that diminished my overall playing experience. I?m disappointed as I really wanted to love this kit. All that said, for the drummer just starting out or one with a very tight budget, this could be a near perfect electronic kit. Roland gear is top notch.
