With four times the wave memory of its predecessor, the TD-4 Sound Module is loaded with great drum and percussion instrument samples. Kits can be customized with virtual tuning and muffling for the kick, snare, and toms. Natural ambiance effects can be adjusted as well.
Custom Controls Drum sounds onboard the Roland TD-4 can be customized to suit your personal style. Just like with a real acoustic drum set, the TD-4's kick, snare, and toms can be tuned up or down quickly across a wide range. The amount of muffling can be user-customized as well, from '70s-style choked funk to open-cannon stadium rock.
Coach Mode The TD-4 module is equipped with Roland's acclaimed Coach Mode, which helps you build speed, stamina and accuracy. Five skill-building exercises are onboard, including the Warm Ups that lets you practice different exercises consecutively for 5, 10, or 15 minutes. The Tempo Check also helps you keep consistent time by lowering the metronome volume when you are playing accurately or vice versa, and raising the click volume when you are playing out of time.
Quick REC The TD-4's "Quick REC" feature allows you to immediately record and play back your performance. It's a great tool for listening objectively to what you've played, and charting your progress. And don't forget the Roland TD-4's built-in metronome for keeping yourself in time. If you record with the internal metronome on, the TD-4 can even evaluate your accuracy afterward during playback.

My first impressions were not very good, but after playing around with it, I do like it quite a bit. This module sounds amazing on the demo videos on Roland's website, but when you set it up and start drumming, it feels a little disheartening to cycle through the preset kits. You get to #25 and think, "Really? That's all?" I'm teaching my wife to drum, so she's not really a "drummer," but even she thought the same thing. It certainly does have a lot of different types of drums considering all the kits, but I felt dissappointed at first impression.
HOWEVER,
if you start tinkering around with the kits, adding a different snare, tuning the toms, muffling this a bit, making that pad more sensitive, adding the rim click option to the snare, etc., after a while you can gain confidence back on a module that would have been kind of disappointing. I really think this module is all about customization, and ESPECIALLY about setting the volume/sensitivity of your pads to match your playing style (for me, the snare pad was not nearly sensitive enough by default on all the kits).
After this customization, you are limited still by the poor quality "ambience" (verb) settings. They are just Okay. I am seriously considering just routing this through a good outboard or computer-based verb on the way to my headphones. The presets aren't very good, and you can't change anything but the volume on them. Overall, I am very satisfied, but it has taken a few days of playing around with it to really unlock its potential, which is considerable.
Overall, I'd say this is well worth it, and realistic sounding, if you are willing to tinker around with the settings to get it to match your playing style and drum sound preferences.
The TD-4 sound module houses some amazing tweakable sounds! Each of the 25 presets that come pre-programmed in sound fantastic, ranging in genre from arena rock to jazz to techno! And after playing with those sounds, you can easily create your own drum kits! Its so simple, and so customizable. There are several great sounding reverbs on this thing, which are also customizable. And the tuning and muting make for limitless possibility while crafting a drum kit for my bands sound.
Roland really went all-out making this a user friendly piece of equipment with high quality drum sounds. The screen is well lit and easy to read. The drum coach and metronome assist in those important hours spent practicing. The headphone jack sounds incredible, even threw low-quality headphones. The midi inputs and outputs work flawlessly. There are many outputs to go to your triggers. It's just an all around great product! If mine got stolen, I would quickly order another to replace it!
The 'brains' of the TD-4 system. I have been using the TD-4 sound module with the Roland V-Drums kit for a little over a year now. This unit offers so many kits that you will never get bored. As a novice, love the built in metronome and play along 'coach'. Has really help with practice and timing. Reliable product, so far it's been great!
