NICE SAMPLER, BUT WORD OF CAUTION
I love this unit BUT you need to know two things upfront before you buy: The manual is a huge challenge to understand because you have to flip from one page to the next page to complete simple basic operations. BUT more than that, the Compact Flash Cards CAN ONLY BE 512MB OR SMALLER!!!! Try finding those in the stores now. YOU're NOT GOING TO FIND ONE!!!! You will have to order online IF you find an online supplier that has stock. Roland needs the send an update because they are falling behind on this. Oh and by the way, Roland does not sell Compact Flash Cards as an accessory. Too bad!

Pads touch sensitivity the worst I've seen.
I'm saddened by the fact I'm probably going to take my SPD-S back. If someone would of written a review like this, I wouldn't of bothered getting it. The problem is I'm a drummer first, & they didn't put the ability to adjust the touch sensitivey into the pads. There's sensitivity on how loud or soft it is when hitting a pad, but not touch senitivity to trigger them. It should allow you the full range between false triggering (too sensitive to the touch); to hit it with a hammer, to get a sound out of it(To much force needed to trigger the sound). I couldn't believe that you could hardly adjust it. I was on the phone with a tech. from roland & found this out. Roland really disappointed me, & dropped the ball here. They usally try to reach forth to both technology in the area of sound & in the area of realism to touch & feel etc. I have to hit the equivalent of a acoustic drums, or most electronics, mezze piano;(medium soft), for volume, before I'd get a sound out of it. That's with the best settings of sensitivity, & curve. Forget a ppp, very soft stroke. That's ridiculous to me. I would of loved to explore the sound possibilities, but my 20 year old octapad blows this away for real touch sensitivity, & dynamic playing. It sits at home though wired to a drum machine & I don't take it to gigs etc. Drummers need dynamics, since they don't have much melody or harmony. I'm very dissappointed. That feature is only on the external pads like a foot, or remote, which makes the 9 main pads pretty sorry to me. I have a great foot with it though; ha,ha.
My review would have gone through the toilet if I didn't like some of the other features for which I bought it for. Sounds inside; small & easy to take to a gig with an acoustic set, & easy set up. Sounds are good & sound expandability is fantastic. I just can't trigger stuff through a tinker toy. I think Roland makes the best in electronic drums, but please improve this unit so it can be what it should be. Finally if the tech. at roland is wrong, & someone knows something we don't; please bring it to light.

Take your time!!!
Remember that you bought this to "Expand". Being a Male, reading a manual is not fun. After the newness has gone away and you are looking to add this to your daily routine, Grab The Manual!! Have it with you when you begin to explore this great machine. Take your time and play with it!!! This thing has great sounds already in it. You can change those with the effects button or delete it and put your own in. You can save everything on Memory Cards. One thing I will say is that if you try to download Wav or MP3 file off your computer to the memory card and then have the SPDS read it...Good Luck! The Pad only reads a few specific files, so don't waste your time. Unplug your speakers on your computer, run a cable from the computer to the input on the SPDS and sample your life away!! The Pad has no choice but to read it, and write it to your memory card or the internal memory. You are now well on your way!! The only other thing would be the velocity sensitive pads. Not the best but you can work with it. Take your time and play with this and your possibilites are endless.

Great if you're getting into Sampling
This unit will bring high quality sampling to your drumset or any percussion set-up. It has 9 surfaces that can trigger sounds, as well as a "stereo" trigger input, which will give you 11 surfaces total. The memory card input will give you more than enough sampling time you need for any gig. Also the onboard sampler has a wave editor which gives you total control of your sounds. And you can also "resample" waves with the onboard effects, which gives you an endless possibility of sounds.Personally this piece of gear inspired me to create music that i wouldnt normally.you cant put a price on inspiration.great unit, great value.
