Roland's SP-404 Power Sampler surpasses its predecessor by offering battery-power compatibility, a CompactFlash slot, and a built-in microphone for quick, stress-free sampling sessions. Add extra color with the many effects built into this little powerhouse.
2 Sampling Modes
Record audio directly into the SP-404, or import/export industry-standard WAV and AIF files via CompactFlash card. The SP-404 also provides a Lo-Fi sampling mode, so you can scorch, roast, and crunch your audio if desired.
Realtime Pattern Recording
The SP-404's easy-to-use sequencer allows up to 8,000 notes to be recorded in real time. For perfect playback, pattern data can be quantized to the note value of your choice. Up to 24 patterns, each 1—99 measures long, can be stored in the internal memory simultaneously. On CompactFlash cards, you can save 96 additional patterns with 8,000 notes of recording capacity per card.
Quick Sampling & Editing
The SP-404 can house up to 24 samples in memory simultaneously. On CompactFlash cards, store up to 96 samples; if you use a 1GB CompactFlash card, sampling times can be as long as 772 minutes in Lo-Fi mode, or up to 386 minutes long in Standard mode. The SP-404 provides sample-editing tools for setting start and end points, adjusting levels, and more.
29 Onboard Effects
Twist, bend, and animate your audio with the SP-404's expressive effects, and manipulate them in real time using the front-panel control knobs. Shake the walls with Subsonic. Drive the dancefloor wild with the BPM Looper (grab a region on the fly and loop it) and DJFX Looper (change speed and reverse audio to get a turntable scratch-like sound). Effects include reverb, flanger, delay, Voice Transformer, distortion, filter, Slicer, Isolator, Vinyl Simulator, and more. Best of all, the SP-404's effects can be applied to multiple samples simultaneously or live input signals. Select the multieffects directly by pressing the MFX button and the corresponding pad at the same time.
Onboard Microphone & I/O
Use the SP-404's mic input to capture audio with an external mic, or just aim, point, and record with the built-in mic! Sample pre-recorded sounds with the line input jacks (L, R) and sample. For playback, the SP-404 offers line outputs (L, R) as well as a headphone output. A MIDI input connector is provided for controlling the SP-404 externally.
CompactFlash
The SP-404 comes equipped with an industry-standard CompactFlash slot that accepts cards up to 1GB. Import WAV and AIF files into the SP-404 via CompactFlash, and vice versa.

I miss it
I just recently sold the sp-404 after owning it for about a year and recently upgraded to the Roland mc-808...I regret it. The 404 was my first beat machine and I kinda assumed that making a good beat on any machine would be as easy as it was on this one. I was very wrong. I learned the sp-404 COMPLETELY in just a few hours and I did some of my best work on it. Now I don't have it and some big opportunities are coming my way. The ease of use and creative flow that you get with this machine can't be matched.
To keep this review balanced, there was some digital noise when you altered the tempo of a sample by just a few bpm's. There is also no swing quantitize setting so if your sense of rhythm doesn't translate to your fingers well, you may want to look elsewhere. Anything that this unit lacks is minor and can be worked around with a little know how. Last but definitely not least, the effects are a huge plus and they are especially useful for DJ's.

portable, powerful and very frustrating!
Okay, so now youve just been paid for the 2 months youve been working at macy's. Youve read about the infamous MPC samplers, and you wanna join in on the action but you havent got 1000 dollars to spend on the cheapest model. Well this could work to your advantage...
Have a look at the latest roland sp series sampler - the sp-404. With enough patience and practise, this sampler can provide some of the freshest productions that can ultimately compete with anything produced on any other sampler(despite the astronomical price tags). What most kids seem to forget is that is the indian - not the arrow - that creates the best tracks! You do not need grands worth of gear to create quality!
The main strength of the 404 is the 30 effects that are very accessible and provide alot of live tweaking possibilities. The quality of the effects are incredible, and the possibilities are really endless(my favourite effect being the lo-fi' effect). Through resampling, you can create 30 different drum kits from one drum kit. and if you havent got a drum kit to start off with, you can sneeze into the internal microphone and mangle it and create a mad snare or hi hat!
The main weakness on this unit, seems to be its lack of chopping and sample editing abilities. there are ways to work around the limitations, but considering what an mpc or most freeware wav editors can do, the sample editing on the 404 can be referred to as the "caveman method".
But with saying that, you can create anything you want to if you put your mind to it. It requires a large amount of patience to learn how to approach this machine, because god knows that whoever wrote the manual has had no previous experience writing manuals, judging by the unexplanitory nature of the manual...

If your still not convinced, Listen to the Madvillian album "Madvillianny", where superproducer madlib took his sp-303(an inferior model)to brazil and created most of the tracks using just the 303, a cheap turntable and a borrowed cassette recorder..
REMEMBER KIDS: It is the Indian - not the Arrow! you do not a $2000 mpc to create magic...

the memory cards 128 and up work best on it.
the smaller one will not be able to layer sounds.
This machine is the dopest beat machine on the market.
It is the BABY MPC.
Its dope for a beginner and anyone just trying to make beats.
