  • Roland RMP-5 Rhythm Coach

The RMP-5 has many features that help me to improve my technique and meter. I really enjoy the coach, and stroke balance features. It is amazing how sloppy you can get and this tool got my triplets back in sync. Every serious drummer could benefit from this light, portable, and effective tool. The pad also reduces shock to the wrists, joints and hands that I experience from my other pads. I am quite pleased with my purchase of this product. Thank you for having the latest and greatest gear for those of us who never stop learning our art.

  • Amazing product

Simply put, all aspiring percussionists need this product. Properly used, the RMP series can make up for what all percussion staff miss. The RMP analyzes where you are in relation to the metronome. Instead of someone feeling if a phrase is fast or slow, you can see in real time whether each individual note is ahead or behind. With the "Stroke Balance" option, you can see if both hands are playing the same dynamic (instead of reading stick heights which can be a faulty read). Also you can still see if you are ahead or behind at different dynamic levels. This has also been fun to throw on my kit. The built in sounds are so fun to mess around with. I have even thrown effects pedals on the output to get some "out of this world" percussion sounds. It would have made my "growing up" in this community a lot easier if something like this existed back then. Even today it can still "kick my tail", and seeing my improvement visually is amazing.

  • Rhythm Coach

As reviewed by Scot on 11/2/2014

This is a really cool piece of equipment to learn and practice drum technique as well as to build hand strength and speed. If you already have a teacher, practice pad, quality drum metronome, and/or electronic drumset, then you probably don't need this. For everybody else, however, it is a nice addition. A few items first: You will need some kind of stand for it and the Roland PDS-2 is a good choice. You will need to use headphones of some kind to hear the sounds and metronome. The external speaker only has a couple of metronome sounds and doesn't play the fancy drum sounds. Get a power supply because otherwise it eats batteries. Sorry, but this is not a cheap entry-level practice solution. The metronome functions are made for drums. Very large range of tempo and beat patterns, and a dozen or more different sounds. When combined with the time check, stroke balance, and other coach functions it's really useful. The coach functions are extremely useful for a dedicated student but depending on the lessons you are using may or may not be as useful (see below). It has a 1/8" stereo (headphone) input for playing along with an external player like a smartphone or mp3 player. I highly recommend you get a cable for this! A lot of lesson books come with music and play-alongs and this is perfect. Finally, it has an external 1/4" TRS (stereo headphone) trigger input so you can plug in an external cymbal or bass kick trigger. If you want both, you need a stereo splitter. I've used it like this to learn and practice drumset, but the external triggers can cost quite a bit and you'll also need a pedal. You'll also want a drum throne for that. You don't need Roland branded items for external triggers.
