I got this so I could fly with my electric fiddle and have a decent amp that I could pack in my carry-on backpack. This thing fits the bill perfectly. Very clean, with some good effects to boot, including very nice chorus and excellent reverb. Nice tone variations: although the EQ is single-knob, it's very effective, and you can add some dirt and fatness with different settings. Loud enough to keep up with a full choir, at least. Good job, Roland!
For what it is designed to do this amp is the best investment I have ever made in gear! I use it all the time...electric guitar for practice sessions, keyboard, ipod, this little thing will run anything! I even use it to do weddings with my classical guitar...the reverb is great.
The only negatives are the the power switch in on the side of the unit, so it can be turned on by accident if it's in a gig bag...I take one of the batteries out when I move it, so it won't turn on. The batteries last a LONG time...it could also use a ext. speaker out, because the 4" speakers have a tough time with the acoustic guitars at higher volumes, but still, this little amp is AMAZING!
Oh, what fun it is to use! Yes, I just received this cool little, true-stereo (or mono, as needed) amp as a 2010 Christmas gift, thanks to my wonderful wife and Guitar Center. For the purposes for which it's designed, i.e., practices and small-venue performances, the Roland Mobile Cube is the perfect workhorse. Originally, I meant to rate it with only 4 stars out of the possible 5 (not bad), but I realized that I was expecting more than that for which it was intended. Besides, making only minor adjustments helped to allay my mild concerns. For its low price, small size, excellent portability (not too heavy), and low-wattage output rating, the M.C. offers remarkably true sound (and plenty of it)!
First off, let me say that I never before have heard any amp which reproduces the clarity of my acoustic-electric guitar. Each of the three settings (clean, overdrive, and distortion) is clear and true, and trust me, the music carries nicely. I have yet to try my electric guitar, but I expect similar results.
At first, I was mildly disappointed in the digital piano amplification. It tended to clip on the louder notes. However, after I played with the tone control a mite, the distortion was gone. Using the M.C. for piano certainly is worthwhile, especially when one considers the very useful, built-in special effects, including reverb, delay, "normal" and "fat" piano settings, direct microphone input (usable in any mode), and "center cancel" option (which removes solo voices or instruments from recorded music--good for karaoke and/or production of accomaniment discs). The M.C. does seem just slightly weak on piano projection at times, and being all in one unit, it doesn't have great stereo separation, but there's no doubt that it does the job sufficiently well. For bigger, broader sound, it could be preamp-outed (through the headphone jack) to a larger, stonger amp, either stereo or mono. You still will have access to all the neat, special features of the M.C. (NOTE: In case of any humming problem, it does include a ground-wire hookup on the side of the unit.)
For being a portable amp, the Mobile Cube reproduces prerecorded music very faithfully. Hooked up to a CD, MP3, or any other recorded music source, you are likely to be impressed. There is, of course, the sing-along feature as well, either with or without the "center cancel" feature in use.
So, there you have it: The Roland Mobile Cube is a multipurpose amp which seems to outdo itself. Based upon its sound, portability, versatility, and affordability, I would recommend this unit to anyone. What are you waiting for? Go get it!
