      Roland AIRA SYSTEM-1 PLUG-OUT Synthesizer (J06600)

The "plug-out" synthesizer.

The SYSTEM-1 is a culmination of Rolandâ??s SYSTEM 100 and now almost mythical SYSTEM 700 synthesizers. Born in the '70s, these modular and semi-modular synthesizers are heralded to this day for their flexibility and character of sound. Over the years these two legendary instruments have been used by some of the most forward-thinking artists and recorded onto countless classic tracks, an iconic sound from decades ago.

Modern Vintage
Meet the SYSTEM-1, a synthesizer probably unlike any youâ??ve encountered before. Like its predecessors, the SYSTEM-1 breaks new ground with remarkable flexibility and access to a vast palette of synthesized sounds with the bold and unmistakable character associated with Roland synthesizers for nearly four decades.

At the heart of the SYSTEM-1â??s sound is Rolandâ??s Analog Circuit Behavior technology (ACB) which was used to carefully analyze every aspect of the original instruments analog circuits and then faithfully recreate them down to the finest details. This technology fills the SYSTEM-1 with a fusion of beautifully classic and utterly modern synthesizer tones.

Thereâ??s more
The SYSTEM-1 can control and even host software recreations of classic Roland synthesizers. Thatâ??s right. The SYSTEM-1 can control plug-in versions of now legendary Roland synths, and those same plugins can be hosted in the SYSTEM-1 itself â?? with no computer required. You can even switch between the SYSTEM-1â??s internal sounds and those of the hosted plug-in. Roland call this exciting wizardry â??Plug-Outâ?.

Youâ??ll be excited too once you experience the authenticity of the SH-101 softsynth, with the SYSTEM-1 providing an intuitive and fully automatic one-to-one control interface that just works. Letâ??s be honest. Who could make a better plug-in version of a classic Roland synth than Roland? And the SH-101 is just the beginning.

The SYSTEM-1 not only sounds amazing, but it also has a totally innovative design with performance ready controls, quality construction, and a dizzying array of lights and knobs and sliders.

  • Roland - no one does it better

As reviewed by Anthony on 7/24/2014

If you're an old school Juno or Jupiter kind of musician who actually knows how to structure a voice via direct analog controls, you will LOVE this synthesizer. If you're a live performer in a band who is into electronica, industrial, synthpop, house, techno dance floor kind of stuff, hip hop, new wave, etc. & wants an instrument you can tweak on the fly without having to scroll through menus for ten minutes, get this synthesizer. Roland always has made deep rich sounds & the System One carries that expectation, there are no cut corners or compromises here. The unit is small, it's thin, compact, easy to transport to a recording session or to a gig. July 25th is the first issue for the plug out capability - hook it up to your computer USB & actually dump programs right into the unit - then it's in there - you don't need a laptop to access the programs, you just transferred them from Roland straight into the System One. You have the on deck stuff you can do or program how you want, plus an extra synthesizer all in one mini keyboard. If I'm not mistaken the amount of options for future use is only limited by the gigantic Roland library of voices from all it's previous synthesizers. MIDI controllers are nice if you do most your stuff within your computer & want to grab sounds here or there, but this isn't designed for non musicians who cheat or steel tracks or loops, this is a real instrument made for real musicians who know their sh*t without having to know code or rocket science. Oh did I mention it crushes anything KORG or MOOG has ever put out? The System One doesn't sound like thin, weak, cheap crap, it sounds serious & it sounds a lot more expensive than the price - Roland has done musicians a huge favor with the price, they easily could have retailed it for double. Buy one if you're really into music & making music sound your way.

  • Great!!!! but.....

As reviewed by Scott on 7/27/2014

Great sounding ssynth but there is 1 MAJOR issue for those who run Ableton and non VST3 DAW's..... The Plug-Outs like the SH-101 is a VST3 and does not work. So please be aware before purchasing that your DAW is compatible with VST3. I pre-ordered the synth so too bad I was unable to know about this. Back to the store it will go and busting out with my Lush.....

  • Great Synth!

As reviewed by morris on 8/17/2014

Great sounding and enjoyable playing synth but one disappointment is the sh-101 download which is a Vst3 format. If you don't have a compatible DAW your out of luck not like Vst2 file. Like many other system 1 owners I don't use a DAW software and just want to play the synth. There are only a few DAW's that are compatible but are very expensive. I spent the last two weeks dealing with Roland support trying to see if there's a way I can use a free host software but none seem to work I suggested that Roland should create a standalone version. Hopefully they will listen to my suggestion. So buyer beware of this problem.
