The lap steel arrived with no defects and was packaged well. All I had to do was attach the legs and within one hour I recorded two songs using it as the lead instrument. The only thing I don't care for are the light gauge strings that came with it. I have a lap dawg bar and just laying it on the strings puts enough weight on it to detune a little. But if you go with a 46 to 56 bottom it eliminates the problem. All in all, for a beginner or someone who wants to have an instrument for variety in their recordings this is an excellent instrument to purchase !

If you're just learning to play the lap steel guitar this isn't a bad buy for the price. However you might want to pick up a new set of strings that usually run around $9-$11 because the strings it comes with are terrible. Also make sure you get yourself a cable with a 90 degree end. The plug in for this guitar is directly on top and it makes it very difficult to change the volume/pitch while playing this lap steel. You might also want to pick up some different finger picks and a few slides until you get comfortable with a certain brand or type. All and all it's not a bad buy, but you got to upgrade some of the equipment to get that good sound. It comes with it's own carrying case so that is helpful. Like I said if you're looking to learn the lap steel this is a good buy for the price.

Marvelous instrument!

By ANTHONY FRATANTUONO

from Silver Spring MD

I've been playing regular guitars for 50+ years and decided to try a lap guitar. The instrument arrived shortly after I placed my order. I also ordered a Shubb SP3 slide to use with it. I did change the strings and used a C6 tuning (CEGACE) after checking online finding that is one of the one more popular tuning choices. While the instrument is cheaply priced, it is NOT cheaply made. It's a fairly high quality instrument that is flawless looking and produces lovely tones! The tone control is effective and provides usable tone alterations. The volume control works smoothly. The Telecaster-like knobs make it easy to manipulate volume/tone as one would on a Telecaster. The single coil is very efficient. I used my Fender Twin Reverb and it sounded great! I also ran it through a Fender Champion with Boss Fender Reverb and was also very pleased with the tone. For portability, I tried playing it through a Roland Micro Cube and was surprised at it's tone. I added a bit of echo/reverb and it sounded great. The other effects on the amp also added additional flavor to the sound. While the tuners are not the best in the world, once it's been tuned, it stays pretty much in tune! Intonation is spot on! Bridge allows adjustments like Strats/Teles if needed. Mine arrived perfectly adjusted. While priced like a toy, I assure you, it's NOT a toy! The construction quality is A-1 ! The adjustable legs are perfect for those not wanting to play it on the lap. It produces professional-like sounds suitable for performances and the appearance certainly has a professional quality to it. I've read where some people have changed the pickup with a higher quality single coil or with a humbucker. I'm sure those would make changes to the tone, but it's perfectly wonderful JUST THE WAY IT IS. I'm thinking about buying another one to tune in a different key for different song requirements.

Funnest guitar alternative

By Elizabeth

from Magna, Ut

I bought this for my Dad, he's super old timey and he loves it. The picture and prices make it look really cheap compared to the other ones listed but this looks so nice in person. the only problem is that it doesn't come with a slide but oh well.

Great (with an asterisk)

By RICHARD

from Lancaster, NY

Let me start by saying that if lap steel were my primary instrument, I would, no doubt, get something better. Still, for a hundred bucks, the quality is really good. The tuning keys are smooth and seem to hold tune. The sound is a little thin but most amps can compensate by cranking up the bass and mid-range. The gloss finish of the body is beautiful (mine is metallic blue) however, the slots where the tuning keys are were barely sanded at all. In fact, some areas didn't even get any paint. It's a fairly hidden area though and I really didn't notice this for the first hour I played it. If that's the only flaw that I could find, I guess I'm happy. I bought this for recording. Sometimes a steel guitar just seems to fit the song and I wanted this capability without breaking the bank. The RLS-1 was the answer. Who knows. If I get good enough, I may invest in something better.

4 stars for value, 3 stars for quality

By Tom

First, the Rogue RLS-1 is about the only lap steel you can buy for under $100 that comes with legs. Anything else (even a Rondo) and you jump up to $150 including shipping. That makes it a deal. THE GOOD: It's cheap. The sustain is reasonably good. It's a good choice for modding. It has legs. It comes with a nice custom gig bag. It looks cool. THE BAD: I had to send one back to Guitar Center because the knobs on three of the tuning pegs were very loose and made tuning the guitar difficult. The replacement was better but STILL had two loose knobs. They are some sort of machine press fit and there is no way to tighten them down to the shaft that either me or a guitar tech could see. At some point, new tuners will be in order. Also, the strings make odd angles to the tuners so two of them rub against the guitar body. Not that this will matter on a cheap guitar but it's something a simple design change could have fixed. THE SILLY: Instruments played with a bar do NOT need height adjustable, full compensation bridges. Why the Chinese build these things this way when they could just use a simpler and more sustain-y hard stop tailpiece is beyond me.

When I saw this item on sale for $69.99 I thought what an amazing price to test drive this instrument. The guitar arrived on-time and with no problems. All I had to do was plug in and play!! For a beginner or someone who wants to have an instrument for variety in their recordings this is an excellent instrument to purchase!

More than what was expected for the price

By Paul Fallet

Don't tell Rogue, but after some modifications, some decent strings and a "Pearly gates" humbucker,a couple new pots, and it's exactly what I needed.

Forget the Naysayers

By Michael Berkowitz

from Chicago, IL

I picked this up on a Flash Deal and was so impressed by the quality and what was included that I got another so I could have one for learning C6 tuning and another for G or D with heavier strings. The Lollar blog has a detailed Rogue refurb described that quite easily made it into a pro instrument. Nut and bridge were replaced with pieces of angle iron to raise and widen (1/16"!,)humbucker, move the jack and change to string-through. I use a DSP Fender amp, so the single coil noise is filtered out. I have an angled plug so the jack is ok and if I find that the 1/16" difference between a pro instrument and the Rogue is an issue or if the plastic nut fails, I'll invest 50 cents for an iron nut and bridge. These steel guitars were/are an incredible missed opportunity for Guitar Center since I had to go elsewhere to buy strings. None of the "Big Box" music stores carry lap steel strings, and you can't tune to a low D with the included strings. C6 tuning isn't a problem. A very pretty instrument with legs and bag included at a great price. Great feel and quality. The only downside was having to invest in a slide, picks and strings.

Rogue RLS-1

By David W McCutcheon

from Southern Indiana

Got this on a great sale from Guitar Center and other than the tuners being a bit sloppy and the single coil (no name) pickup being a bit weak, it is all I expected it to be for the price and then some. I love it, really! I am changing out the pickup to my liking and will order a better set of tuning keys for it. Then it will be a great lap steel. If you are interested in learning lap steel I say go for this one. Even at the normal price plus a few custom parts of your liking you've got a very nice steel for under $200.
