I got this guitar for a Beginning Guitar class I took recently and I must say, it will not dissapoint. When I first started playing it, it sounded very bright. However, after about 2 weeks, it began acquiring a very rich tone. Best of all, it stays tuned for a very long time. If its your first time buying a guitar, this is an excellent choice. I also recommend getting the Musicians Gear Deluxe Dreadnought Case (Item# 540945). Trust me, these two items make a perfect match!

This is unique for a beginner who may have a fly by night interest in learning. The action is high off the fret board and blows out of tune in a controlled environment. Consequently, it will help a beginner regarding fingering and tuning. The tone does not ring to a warm sound. I strung it with Martin mediums and it still sounds like a tin, thin picking guitar. On that note it does serve as a great learning instrument. If you play on this and move up to a better quality guitar you will be set for success. Bottom line is the guitar can not hold a simple E tuning. The sound is cheap and is almost a chore to play. I would recommend stepping up to a better guitar like a beginner factory built Yamaha...they sit around the same price. I bought a cheap Yamaha for my wife and she can hand pick it with ease.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar as a gift for someone and the full size dreadnought was too big for them, so they gave it back to me and I bought them a smaller sized guitar.

This guitar was never meant to be played by me but since it was there, I picked up it and to my surprise I actually enjoyed the sound it gave. It has a good bark and a sort of box-y sound but a good sound. I started to tinker with it and set the action (string height) as low as I could without fret buzz.

For my own curiosity I then mounted a single coil pickup in the sound hole and installed a volume and tone knob. You plug this into an amp and this guitar just jumps out at you! Has a really cool sound all in its own.

I have a Martin dreadnought acoustic guitar that is significantly more expensive than this Rogue model and to compare them side by side, the greatest difference is the ease of play. The Martin comes set-up out of the case silky smooth to play. If you know how to play the guitar, the Martin is like having an automatic engine in your car, you just put it in drive and hit the open road.

This Rogue, as best as I could set the action, it's still not as easy or smooth to play as the Martin. It's sort of like having a stick-shift while driving in rush hour traffic. It requires a little more work and energy to make the music you want to make and it's not quite as easy to play.

If you're a serious guitar player, you want a guitar that is easy to play and not one that you have to battle to make music with. It's not fun when you have to squeeze the fretboard down constantly to make chords because eventually you'll want to put the guitar down rather then keep playing it. My personal recommendation is get this guitar as a starter guitar. Master it, appreciate it, but down the road, you'll want to invest in a more luxurious guitar because when you put your hands on that guitar that cost way more than you'd ever thought you'd spend on a guitar, you'll understand why you paid so much for it.

Comments about Rogue RA-100D Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Musician's Friend gets 5 stars for fast shipping and customer service. I purchased this guitar because I own a Rogue RD-80 that I played and purchased from GC. That instrument was a surprising good guitar for what it was and I would recommend it. To make the RD-80 playable for a goof around guitar a setup was certainly needed. I removed the strings immediately, took 0000 steel wool to the fretboard and frets to remove the horrible overspray on them. Lemon oiled the fretboard. Removed some of the gloss on the back of the neck and lemon oiled it. I further polished and leveled a couple of high frets. I then sanded the extremely cheap plastic saddle and adjusted the truss rod for the proper neck relief. Strung up with Elixir Nanoweb lights. It sounds and plays great.

Based on this and the positive reviews I thought I try this with the RA100D. It's supposed to be the better model. Well even after putting in a bunch of time to set the guitar up it was just not worth it. Over half the frets had issues with buzzing and needed attention. The sound was that of a very cheap dreadnought made of plywood. I know that's what it's supposed to sound like. Well the RD-80 sounds close to a Yamaha FG700 or some other cheap spruce top/laminate guitar. The nut width is not as large as the RD-80. I could not get the intonation to be acceptable on this guitar. I changed the saddle to a compensated saddle with little improvement.

The lesson learned is that when buying cheap guitars like this you're playing with fire. Sure there are the occasional good sounding ones that play well. However, you can find the Yamaha FG series for a little more and get an infinitely better instrument. Because I modded mine rather than return it I smashed it and tossed it in the dumpster. Life's too short to mess with junk and that's what this one was despite my efforts to set it up correctly. The cheap sound alone makes this guitar unworthy of all the praise.

I bought this guitar for my daughter and she never even got a chance to play it before the piece of junk broke. We bought it at the end of April and middle of July and its broke. I took it back to see if they could do something with it or if there was some kind of warranty but of course no. I wouldn't recommend this poorly constructed piece of junk even at the cheap price it is totally not worth the money.
