Overview

From Rogue comes this amazing deal in the RA-90 dreadnought acoustic guitar. The Rogue guitar is an ideal instrument for the beginner, or young musician. The body depth and width bring out balanced tone and plenty of projection to be heard from across the room.

This ultra-affordable dreadnought acoustic guitar features a whitewood body, which brings out lots of mid-range punch. The nato neck adds sustain without losing any strength in tone. The painted maple bridge and fingerboard add clarity to each note, and a striking look to the front of the guitar. The RA-090's C-shape neck, 1-2/3" nut width, and 16" radius help with intricate fretboard movements when running up and down the 20 frets. The RA-90 also features nickel hardware and covered tuners. This Rogue acoustic guitar will certainly get the job done, at a price that anybody can afford.

SORRY FOR THE EXTREMELY LONG REVIEW, BUT THIS IS A THOUGHTFUL REVIEW FOR THE INTIATED READER, SO BY ALL MEANS READ ON: I have been playing for about 20 years now and I have owned and been able to play some very nice acoustics over that time, but I have gone without an acoustic guitar for the past 4-5 years, and I recently had the urge to own one again. Unfortunately due to my current economic situation, money is extremely tight for me right now. I wanted to buy an acoustic for in and around the $100 range so I could have SOMETHING to play until my finances turned around. I looked at Fenders and Epiphones, amongst others, and I played several of them, but I didn't like what I was hearing - dull, lifeless, thin-sounding acoustics with no character to the tone they produced. Then I saw the Rogue RA-090, and I decided to check it out on YouTube. There wasn't much posted, but there were two posts that revealed something about the Rogue's sound that caught my attention - a fullness and warmth, and a midrange texture that I found appealing. But I certainly had my reservations about construction quality, and consistency from one guitar to the next, as well as my ability to receive a half decent guitar that compared to what I had heard on YouTube. I figured I could take my chances and at the very least, it would be a good laugh! So I ordered one. Man, let me tell you, what I received exceeded my expectations in a way I NEVER thought possible. This is an absolute gem of a guitar! The tone that emanates from this thing is incredible. There is a depth of tone, and fullness, and a midrange that is full of warmth, clarity and complexity, as well as a sweetly balanced treble. All these qualities come together to make this guitar truly something special. This guitar also sounds extremely balanced from top to bottom - no peaks in bass, middle or treble at all. Strum or fingerpick chords anywhere on this thing and you will be rewarded with the very definition of balance. One amazing thing is the fact that there are no "dead" sounding spots anywhere on the neck. Go above the 5th fret on any other cheap guitar, and the sound quickly starts to get wooly or thin-sounding. This guitar has NONE of that, and at no time does the tone collapse the higher you go up the neck. I can play this thing above the 12th fret and all the tone, and volume is still there. Another amazing thing is just how effortless the sound comes out of this guitar. Even at very low playing volume, this guitar still throws out a very full, complex, and inviting sound that is full of tonality. This is something that is truly hard to find in ANY guitar, and is fantastic for a nuanced playing style or for playing late at night. The construction of this guitar is also something that exceed my expectations. The fit and finish is very good. The finish itself is very nicely applied with absolutely NO blemishes anywhere on the mirror-like body. The only blemish I could find in the finish was on the neck near one of the fret markers above the 12th fret - but for the price, who cares? The "whitewood" top on this guitar is very attractive and has a very nice grain pattern to it, and is actually better looking than in the picture. My guitar even has a touch of flamed figuring below the bridge! A look inside reveals that this guitar actually has an X-braced top! Guitars this cheap aren't supposed to have X-braced tops! Hell, at this price, I'm surprised it has bracing at all! (Just kidding). An X-braced top is unheard of anywhere near this price and is surely part of the great sound of this guitar. It's nice to see that someone actually put in some care and thought in regards to properly designing this thing. Also, all of the braces and linings (the ribbed part inside that helps join the top to the sides), are completely devoid of excess glue. Everything has glue right up to the inside edge of each joint, and that's it. No beads of glue, or glue drips to be found anywhere, which lends itself to a very tidy looking interior. Based purely on interior cosmetics, the fit and finish is as good as any acoustic you'll find - no kidding! You really don't expect this kind of workmanship in a guitar in this price range, let alone one that sells for THIS cheap! It's amazing to see that these things aren't just slapped together. Quite impressive. However, one minor reservation I have about the construction is that the top is a little thinner than a normal acoustic, but being that it has a laminate top, it SHOULD be just as strong as a solid wood top of any other guitar. However, the fact that it has a thinner top may also be the reason why this guitar sounds the way it does, because this allows the top to vibrate more freely. Also, maybe there is something to the whitewood used for the top and body as well? This is a wood that I have never heard of before for guitar making, but maybe this wood has something to do with the great sound this guitar produces, DESPITE it being a fully laminated guitar. There HAS to be something to it - the wood, the X-brace, or both? The bridge is nicely finished and the neck is comfortable to play. However, the description says both the bridge and the fretboard is made of rosewood, yet both are painted flat black. Maybe they aren't rosewood after all? Oh well. When a guitar sounds this good, who cares? And at this price point, these are sins of omission. The action is very nice and it takes very little finger pressure to fret notes along the fretboard which makes it effortless to play. And as cheap as the tuning machines look, they turn very smoothly and even hold tune quite well! I guess I won't need to replace them until they wear out! Who knew?! So, to wrap up, if you can't tell, I am absolutely blown away with this guitar! I don't know if I received a "ringer" (i.e. the so-called pick of the litter), but what a genuinely beautiful voice this guitar has! Utterly baffling!

The product came to be me with the neck cracked and appears to be super glued over. The instrument plays fine but I'm dissapointed in the condition it arrived to me in.

Great beginner guitar

By Keith Wansley

from Lawrenceville GA

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

For this being my first guitar I have to say it's pretty sweet and very well worth the money. I think it has a really good sound for being as cheap as it is. I bought this just to see if I would take to playing guitar and it looks like I have. The guitar did have a little ding on the body but other than that it arrived in very good shape. I'd recommend this to anyone who thinks they want to play guitar but doesn't want to spend a lot of money in case they don't want to learn how to play.

String Snapped

By Grace L

from New York, NY

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

The guitar is great for the price. It looks really nice. It is a fully size guitar and it sounds fine. The problem is the string snapped on the first day (seemed defective) so you might want to count on having to spend more on another set of strings since it broke so quickly which is a hassle because then you have to wait to get the strings shipped to you and you have to restring the guitar which seems like it might be a pain.

Can't complain for the price!

By Brandon Woods

from Salt Lake City, Utah

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I was worried about buying this guitar... especially since having owned a big manufacturers $120 model, and was very unhappy with it. But, to my surprise, This guitar actually plays pretty decent for the price! No fret buzz, action is a little high, but usable. The sounds is about what you would expect from a under $150 acoustic... It's good, and decent, but lacks that "High-end quality" sound. Overall, this guitar will be with me wherever I go, for jams on the fly! The price let's me travel without worry because if it breaks... heh, just buy another one!

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar about a month ago and have no complaints thus far. I got it for the learning experience, primarily, as I wasn't too keen on dropping a large sum of money on something I wasn't sure about. Looks like, with a bit more time and patience, I may have found something I legitimately like to do in my spare time! It arrived in great condition, and the sound is quite lovely once it's properly tuned. No complaints! :)

Most Durable Guitar Ever

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar 4 1/2 years ago. I take this with me camping every month. This thing has been left out in the rain, the snow, been hit by sticks and taken some real epic tumbles right onto its neck. Still holds it's tune and still sounds amazing. I have guitars that are much more expensive, and of much "better" quality, but this guitar will always be my favorite. I don't feel like I have to be precious with it, so I actually take it out to weird places to play it. I have banged the neck into more door frames then I can count and it is always in tune and ready to play. I wish I could go 10 stars on this one.

Will be buying more, VERY impressed

By Tony Wall

from Phoenix, Arizona

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought a more expensive guitar prior to this one and I was happy with it. In fact my brother liked that one too and I bought him one. Then by chance I went to Guitar Center near my house and this was on a tremendous sale. I thought what the heck so I picked it up and was lucky as I got the last one. I was thrilled that it sounded so much better than my more expensive one and was actually easier to play. I again visited my brother and took it to show him. He loved it! He has arthritis and it is harder for him to play guitar but this one was so much easier for him. So when I got home I went online and I ordered one for him using the chat option and sent to his house to surprise him. The person was extremely helpful and I am just thrilled with both guitars. My daughter is learning and a couple friends are interested in guitar now so I will be buying more of these. And I want a black one to add to my collection. I let my daughter (10 yrs old)play with the more expensive one now. And I use it to experiment with (converting it now to an electric acoustic) But that is how good the Rogue is. I won't modify it or even try. It has a very warm sound and a much better feel than the more expensive ones. Even the strings that came on it are still on it and hold tune very well. I haven't touched it after the first couple of days when the strings settled in. Had it about a month now. Sorry so long a review but I love it.

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I am still fairly new at guitar, but after playing on friends' Martin guitars and multiple other high quality guitars, this one is just what I need. It sounds good, is easy to play (not super high action), easy to tune, and so far has been durable. I would make the same decision to buy this guitar again. Ultimately, I hope to become much more experienced and therefore justify spending a lot more money on a high quality guitar. For now, this is exactly what I needed.

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar for the family as I didn't want my good guitars ruined. I was surprised at the sound and quality for the price. I have decided that this will be my guitar to take camping. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an inexpensive guitar for a preteen or if you plan to play in harsh conditions. Also makes a great starter for someone not sure if they want to play.

    Great for Travel!

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

If you like to take your guitar around places, this is what you need. It sounds good, stays in tune well, can take a bit of wear and tear and looks great! I have had this guitar for about 2 years now and it's still alive and kickin'. I use it to take around places and entertain my friends. It's also good for beginners if you're not sure how committed to playing you'll be or are just on a tight budget. There's a couple of cons to this guitar, but don't knock it because of these because that's not what most people looking for a cheap guitar look for. 1. There is no top strap peg, but plenty of guitars don't have these and you can use a string on the neck if you wish. Or if you want to try to add a peg yourself that's always an option. 2.It has no pickups. Again, if you are just starting of just taking it places this is not a big deal. You shouldn't expect it for $50-60 either. If it matters that much you can install them yourself or use an external pickup. This is a great guitar!

I bought this guitar for a really good price at a black Friday sale. I am a beginner so I don't know to much about guitars but this guitar sounds great. I did have to replace the strings because I broke one so I replaced them with Ernie Ball Earthwood medium-lights and the guitar sounds even better than before.

Comments about Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I received mine about a half hour ago. When opening the package, I quickly noticed that the fret board is worn, scuffed and appears used. Some of the lower frets themselves are rusted. The edges around the body are worn and scuffed as well. This product was not advertised as used or refurbished, but definitely does not appear new. I won't be buying from the website again, as I will not be able to actually see the product before purchasing it.
