Solid Little Bass

MUSICIAN'S FRIEND:
I ordered this bass on the afternoon of June 3. I chose the free (4-6 business days) shipping, and received it on the morning of June 6. Can't complain about that

THE PACKAGE:
The outer box was undamaged, and well protected. The inner box had a hole where the bridge side strap knob punched through.

SET UP:
The neck required 1/4 turn tighter to bring the neck relief to 0.4mm at the 8th fret. I was able to lower each string a little from there and get no fret buzz. Each string needed minor intonation adjustments. I had to let the pups out to their maximum height in order to get any reasonable volume going. Also, I went over every single screw, nut, and bolt and NOTHING was loose on it.

THE APPEARANCE:
Overall: Once unwrapped, the bass was in pristine condition. No, scratches, dings or dents anywhere on the bass.

Body: It is wood coated with what looks like an indestructible layer of polyurethane/plastic. The volume/tone knobs are metal. The bridge is the same generic model as was on my Dean Edge. I swapped out the strap buttons for strap locks immediately.

Pups: Honestly, they are garbage. I have a 250watt Carvin MB210 amp in my apartment. I have to turn both volume controls, and both tone controls to maximum to make this bass be heard with the amp volume at "8". And I'm practicing by myself.

Neck: I read a LOT of reviews before I purchased this product, and besides weak pups, most problems people encountered were in the neck. Either I was lucky, or Rogue has addressed these issues. My neck is straight and true. The fret ends are well filed and smooth against the neck. A lot of people complained that the frets were uneven, requiring very high action, or getting a buzz. Rogue seems to have addressed this by placing the neck in some sort of sanding machine. Each of my frets is flat where the string makes contact, and different frets have different amounts filed, but I have low action, and NO BUZZ!!! The neck is made out of two pieces of Maple fused together where the headstock leans back. I think that any low priced entry level instrument will be the same. My Dean Edge was the same way. Finally, the truss rod turns smoothly making no sounds of sticking against the wood.

Headstock/Tuners: The headstock is in excellent shape. The tuners were a little sticky at first, but I loosened the screw in the key, and turned it back and forth several times to get the grease all over the gears inside it. Then I tightened the screw just snug, not tight, and it is easy to tune, and stays in tune for days.

THE REVIEW:
I bought this bass for three reasons:
1.) The truss rod in my Dean Edge broke, and I wanted another low priced back up instrument.
2.) I am thinking about buying a very good 5 string in a few months, and want to know if I like the way a 5 string plays and feels.
3.) Rocksmith and Band Fuse seem to like lower end instruments over my Ibanez SR1200 with LaBella Strings.

I didn't have very high expectations when I ordered this instrument. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. I have a solid (well built and balanced) body. A straight neck that plays fast and doesn't buzz. And it stays in tune. That is worth the money that I paid for it right there.

The strings are cheap, and were quickly replaced. But I replace the strings on every instrument I get. And honestly, I didn't hate the sound of these strings as much as I hated the Elixers that came on my SR1200. But strings are a highly personal experience, and your experience might differ.

Because the pups are cheap, they are virtually useless. I have to turn everything to max, and my amp to "8" in order to hear this bass. My amp has tons of tonal adjustments so I can still get the sound that I want from it. However, I don't think that you should let the bad pups turn you away from this bass.

If you are brand new to learning bass, these pups will let you play, and you are probably better off not going too crazy with tonal varieties while you are just learning the neck, notes, and scales.

If you are somewhat experienced with the bass, and want to try a 5 string, you can get really good pups relatively cheap and turn this bass into a real contender for a very small investment.

In the end, it's all about managing your expectations. For the money this instrument costs, you won't get a world class sounding axe. No matter what manufacturer you use. If you don't mind a stable sounding instrument with no real tonal variations, or if you are willing to invest in some new electronics, this bass is a GREAT deal.

RATING: 4 out of 5.

Opened the outer box and then inner box, which was corrugated cardboard 1 ply thick, no reinforcement at top or bottom with Styrofoam or additional cardboard. Box was like a gift box where the top covers the bottom, which masked the fact that the lower box was torn apart at the bottom, and a shipping label was used to cover it.

The base was wrapped in thin white foam, and when I removed it the body was chipped on the bottom with abrasions across the back, one of the tuners was missing a screw, and two of the pods for the tone and volume were missing. It looks like the box gave way in the manufacturer's or Musician's Friend's warehouse (inspection sticker from manufacture leads me to believe the latter)the bass fell out and was somehow drug or pushed across the floor on its back, then re-boxed and shipped to me. Got a return authorization and it's on it's way back ASAP. Will try one more time with another order, but so far of the 5 Rogue guitars and basses I've ordered, only the 2 acoustic electrics and Six string bass were keepers on the first try.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this bass as my first 5 string, like probably most people who bought this instrument. Long story short, the instrument did not disappoint. I am very pleased with its quality and playability.
However, the only things which are a little frustrated are that it takes some time to figure out which knobs are which on it, and I don't recommend using this with an old or low-quality amp.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for over 12 years now and recording for just over 5 years. I've played several bass guitars including upper end Ibanez's, Fender's, and some cheaper bass guitars, but this is my favorite to play with. Very good tone, easy to play, and solidly built. I've used this bass to recording songs in my home studio and just to jam, and for both it sounds great! I would definitely recommend it to my friends.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this as my first 5 string bass just to see if I would like a 5'er. I would recommend to anyone wanting to purchase their first 5 string, save for an Ibanez, Squier, Schector, or anything other than a Rogue. Now I'm not one to normally bash on entry level instruments, but I have made this bass guitar the exception to my rule. Bad set up, muddy pickups, funky strings, etc, etc, etc. By the time you get a decent set up done, buy better strings, replace the pups, and doing other mods, you could have bought a better quality instrument. Cons: all of it. Pros: GC's return policy. Thanks for taking it back GC. I'm saving for a Fender.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

I play several instruments professionally. Bass I play for kicks. Always wanted to learn 5 string, but couldn't justify the investment. This instrument was a father's day sale item. Very inexpensive! It has a lot of plastic parts (bridge!... tuners!!!) and two of the strings ( B & E) broke when I tried setting the guitar up (it came with all the strings loose) MF was happy to send another set (much better strings, too!). I wasn't holding much hope, but once I got the thing set up and tuned, I used it at a jam session, and it actually performed very well! I am now an official 5 string bassist with this Rogue and that, to me, is amazing... who knows, I may start playing bass as a professional too!!!! thanks, MF

I use it to play death metal and that. I like that it isn't heavy as other basses but poor craftsmanship. Has a fret buzz that gets annoying after a while. Came damaged near the head of guitar.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

This is an outstanding bass for the price point. Ive had it for six months now and im still very happy with it. Now it didnt come in the mail totally perfect. it needed a good full set up (truss rod adj. Nut filled, new strings, picku hight set, strinh hight set, and i took it a step further and had the frets resurfaced and a good leveling done.)
No problems with tuning stability. No problems with the electronics. no problems with the functionalityi would recomend strap locks if playing live.
Ive used it in a recording studio and live as well. Its a straight up work horse.

I just picked this up at my local GC. My kids ordered it as my Father's Day gift this year. ;) Anyway, I opened it up at GC and it looked great out of the box. Low action, no scratches, dings, dents, or any other problems sometimes associated with items shipped by carrier. I'll get it home tonight and plug it in to see how it sounds. I also have an Ibanez Mikro 4 string (black) and Squier Jaguar (red w black pick guard). I'm a new player after not playing an instrument for 28 years. ( I formerly played cello and drums) I'll pick it and bang on it for a bit and re-post how is sounds later. To all: Happy playing!
