You can't beat this package.
This was an impulse buy for me. I'm writing an e-book on how to set up a mandolin and needed another factory mando to use for illustrations and "before and after" examples. As a long-time guitarist I couldn't resist the opportunity to see what kind of guitar and mandolin you could get for a this combined purchase price.

The Rogue mandolin is a real bargain at its normal $40 price at Musicians Friend. If you're willing to spend an hour or two to set it up properly it's easy to play and sounds very nice (hence my e-book). The mando is well-built but as shipped the nut and saddle both need significant (but easy) work to get the action and intonation right.

The guitar came shipped with the action already adjusted very nicely. It sounded nice and bright, except the G string sounded dead. I assumed there was a defect in the guitar, removed all the strings, took the saddle out of the bridge and found a few bad things: there was a small plastic shim under the high E and A strings, which I removed; the bottom of the saddle was uneven, so I sanded it flat, and there was a notch in the top of the saddle where the G string sat, so I sanded that part flat as well.

After putting the strings back on the G string still sounded dead. Out of curiosity I reomved it, loosened the D string and mounted it in the G string spot. It sounded perfect. So I removed all of the strings are re-strung the guitar with fresh D'Addarios, and the guitar sounds great. The rest of the strings sounded OK, but it's easier to change them all at the same time.

The tuning gears are pretty low quality, but they work. The frets are all installed well, intonation is good, a couple of the frets could be dressed better, but this is nitpicking on this level of instrument. This is a great guitar for beginners and intermediates, or for good guitarists who need a traveling/campfire guitar.
The finish is beautiful. Tuning gears are adequate. Strings didn't look or feel like Martins to me, but who knows? The saddle was a little rough, but fixable with sandpaper.
This is an off-the-charts value. It's like buying the guitar and getting a free mandolin!

I was really excited to get this amazing deal, but the skeptic in me said the price was too good to be true. Upon receiving the instruments we realized they are PLASTIC. I don't know about you, but when I think stringed instruments I think abut lush, beautiful wood. The guitar is very light weight, the mandolin a little heavy for its size. The mandolin is a little awkward to hold as well. They sounded ok but look just what they are; cheap plastic instruments. Good for a beginner or someone who isn't too concerned about the feel of their weapon in their hands. If it wasn't a combo, we'd have kept the mandolin, aside from the metal piece popping off the base and not being able to get it to fit back properly. An OK product, but disappointing. We had no problems returning the products.

Comments about Rogue Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin Pack:

I bought this package because I really wanted an acoustic guitar. I am used to playing electric, but I was very excited about the rich sounds of an acoustic. Although the guitar does provide a very warm sound, there are a lot of problems. I can physically feel that the guitar is cheaply made. It is nearly impossible to keep in tune, and I find that after maybe 10 minutes of playing that I have to retune. The strings are much higher than the fret board, which requires an enormous amount of effort required to push them down. Upon being pushed down, the strings buzz along other frets. It is not surprising considering the extremely low price of the package. I saw the mandolin as kind of a bonus to the package, and figured I could learn it just for fun. Unfortunately, with 8 strings instead of six, the mandolin truly was impossible to tune. I spent over an hour of frustration trying to tune the instrument, until finally a string snapped. Although this wasn't devastating to me, it was annoying how cheaply made the instrument was. I believe that buying two separate instruments from a name brand other than Rogue is a much better choice, however the price is much higher. After reading other reviews, it is possible that I just had a bad product: that being said, I am sure I won't buy any more Rogue products in the future.

          Good After Setup

Comments about Rogue Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin Pack:

Tuned them up straight out of box. The guitar had good intonation, however the nut slots needed attention to lower the strings to a comfortable playing level. Strings were up ¼" on first fret. Worked on the nut slots and brought them down, put on new D'Addario strings. Plays well with a decent tone. The guitar had a paint chip on the rear of the lower bout, not much but it is there. For these reasons I rate the RA-100D guitar 3 stars ........
Then RM-100A mandolin was another project item. Replaced the nut with a TUSQ nut, leveled and dressed the frets, worked on the tuners (a couple were very hard to turn), put on new D'Addario J74 strings, set the intonation on the bridge, and tuned it up. WOW. The RM-100A has some bark to it. I am very pleasantly surprised. It has a great tone and the projection is out of this world for a cheap plywood mandolin. It holds tune well over time. It gets 5 stars ..... I bought these knowing that some setup work would likely be needed but neither of them were as bad as I thought they would be. Not sure if I would recommend to a newbie unless they have the skills, or know someone who does, to bring out the hidden magic in the instruments. I bought them specifically as project instruments to add piezo-electric pickups to make then acoustic-electric instruments. I will more than likely buy some more of the RM-100A's to setup and distribute locally to young people that show an interest in learning to play the mandolin. Please note that my 4 star overall rating is based on the instruments after setup work. This is a rating in comparison to other brands of comparable quality and price instruments, not compared to $600+ quality instruments.

          Surprised!

Comments about Rogue Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin Pack:

I have been playing guitar for 34 years. I have quality expensive guitars. I'm giving this 'combo' 5 stars, because as an instrument (both), and at this price (for both), my expectations were not very high at all---and I was pleasantly surprised.
I expected cheap, flimsy, poorly made "starter" instruments...but these don't fit that category in my opinion. Both well built...and with new strings and a proper set-up, play and sound just as good as more expensive instruments.
I got the Natural guitar, and Sunburst mandolin.
Was looking for an inexpensive guitar that I wouldn't worry about taking in a canoe, camping, and rugged outdoor activities, and the mandolin was a bonus. After removing the "tinny" steel Martin strings, oiling the fretboard, filing sharp edges on the frets, and restringing with quality Phosphor Bronze strings, (string height and neck bow was fine, so no truss rod, bridge, or nut adjustment was necessary on mine), I'm not sure I wanna let this guitar get beat up in the outdoors any more.
The mandolin, I haven't done much more than inspect it, tune it, and strum it a bit, because I'll have to learn a little more on how to play it. But the stock strings sound fine to my ears, so I didn't bother to change them out. The binding on this instrument is beautiful, and makes it that much more solid.
Both showed up with no visible damage, or missed 'quality control' issues (I don't count the sharp fret edges on the guitar, because at this price they're NOT going to "roll" the edges like Fender, Gibson, Taylor, etc...)
It is the less expensive, less resonant woods used to make these instruments that make them so affordable NOT the construction. Even as an experienced player, I wouldn't be afraid to recommend this combo to ANYONE looking to play. If you want to get the best out of them (or atleast the guitar) be prepared to do a proper set-up, or know someone that can do it for you.
