The Rocktron Velocity 300 Rack Power Amp was designed in a joint effort between Rocktron and integrated circuitry design engineer Derek Bowers. The Velocity 300 is the first commercially available amplifier to be based on current-feedback technology. This technology provides extremely high-speed, wide-bandwidth amplification. The bandwidth of the power amp section is considerably higher than typical amplifiers based on voltage feedback designs therefore providing much more punch and definition than previous designs have allowed for.

Another of the Rocktron Velocity 300 power amp's innovative features lies in the reactance simulation circuitry (controlled by the front panel "Reactance" control. At the minimum setting of the reactance control, the Velocity 300 will provide the added punch and improved transient response of the high-speed current-feedback design. As this control is turned up, the Velocity 300 will begin to simulate the interaction that takes place between the tube amplifier and the guitar speaker cabinet.

In addition to the high-speed current-feedback design, the Velocity 300 also incorporates Rocktron's unique "Speaker Reactance Simulation" circuitry. This concept is unprecedented in a solid-state amplifier and yields the much-sought-after sound of the most impressive tube amplifiers without the added maintenance and cost and weight of a tube amp. In addition, the Velocity 300 has "Definition" controls to give you that little bit of edge you need to bring your playing out in the mix. It also has automatic short circuit protection, which detects problems and shuts down the amplifier before any internal damage can be done.

While other amplifier manufacturers seem to concentrate solely on the harmonic characteristics of the tube itself (and how to recreate them in a solid state circuit), Rocktron suggests it still lacks the tube sound. When put to the test and compared directly with the most popular tube amps, these solid state designs still sound cold and thin.

At the maximum setting of the reactance control, the Velocity 300 will instead sound like a tube amplifier, simulating the interaction between a tube amplifier and a guitar speaker cabinet. The resulting sound is much warmer and fatter, and when compared directly with a tube amp, is virtually indistinguishable.

Great SS poweramp

By Stuart

from Greenville, SC

Comments about Rocktron Velocity 300 150W Rack Power Amp:

My setup is an Fractal Audio Axe Fx preamp (check these out if you haven't!!!), SS poweramp into a Mesa 2x12 cab with V30's. I tried a QSC GX3 first and had good results, but there was a high-end peak that I couldn't get rid of with that poweramp. Also, the amp didn't feel like a tube amp (when compared to a Mesa Dual Rectifier and Marshall Vintage Modern). The Rocktron really added helped solve both of those problems. It comes very close to feeling like a tube amp, but it is still transparent enough to not completely color the sound coming from the preamp. I would recommend this amp for someone looking to preserve their preamp's tone without losing the tube amp feel. I think a tube poweramp may feel a bit better, but you would likely color the sound a bit... which could be good or bad depending on your preferences. My particular preamp has poweramp modeling, which I leave active, so I needed an amp that didn't add too much to the sound coming from the pre. The reactance control adds a lot of warmth very quickly (mine is set to 3-4) and the definition (presence) control can get harsh if not used properly (set to ~2). It is a great guitar poweramp and reacts very much like a tube poweramp. Using a Dual Rectifier patch on my preamp and running it through the power section of a real Dual Rectifier sounds very similar to running the same patch through the Rocktron. Pair it with a nice preamp and you will be set!

Rock Solid

Comments about Rocktron Velocity 300 150W Rack Power Amp:

A great piece of gear. Easy to use and equally easy to get a good tone when combined with a decent preamp. I use a Pod X3 Pro running stereo into the Velocity through a 4x12 stereo cab and I love it. Getting good tube-like tone is simple with the reactance control which really warms up the sound and adds good punch to the low end. With the stereo and mono bridge options, it is easily compatible with most cab setups. If it were stolen I would definitely buy it again. 1 rack space and ample power with all the setup options this unit allows make it a worthwhile purchase. Only thing I don't know is how well it cools itself as it is a new purchase, but from most things I've read, this is not an issue for the Velocity. Definitely consider this product. Top of my list as far as solid state power amps go.

Rocktron Velocity 300 150W Rack Power Amp

Comments about Rocktron Velocity 300 150W Rack Power Amp:

I have had this amp a little over a year now. Seemed to be a decent SS for the money until I was playing live and my amp shut off without warning. No hissing or popping, just dead. After inspecting the amp, the surface was hot enough to fry an egg. The internal cooling fan stopped blowing which caused the amp to over heat and shut off. I e-mailed Rocktron and they suggested I remove the lid and check the wires. After taking the lid off, I noticed one of the wires wasn't connected properly so I re-seated it on the connector. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the fan issue. Once I explained to Rocktron all the wires and fuses were in good condition they told me to check the thermistors with a heat gun. Since I don't have a heat gun, or know the location of their faulty electronics I asked if I could have the amp serviced. They sent me a link to locations not local to me. I gave this amp 3 stars only because I liked it when it worked. Otherwise, it would only get 1 star. What I don't like as a musician is having to work on a piece of equipment that should have lasted longer than it did for known issues. -1 star Also lazy/lousy customer service representatives really grind my gears. -1 star After being in contact with Rocktron, I started searching this issue online and found this is a known issue with Rocktron amps. I understand nothing lasts forever, but this amp was the only brand new piece of equipment in my rack. Everything else in my rack was bought used and still works fine. I will be saving up for a tube power amp and see if more money gets a better quality amp. This entire ordeal has been frustrating and hope my review helps others if they decide to buy this product.

I have purchased several Rocktron products including this power amp. I am a bass player first and I prefer rack set-ups that are easy to use. This amp is worth the price and powers my rig without any issues.

Rocktron velocity 300 - Fire risk.

By Stephen

from Greenock renfrewshire

Comments about Rocktron Velocity 300 150W Rack Power Amp:

I had been using a mesa rack set up for years which sounded great but my back was begging me to invest in a lighter more streamlined spine friendly set up. The velocity 300 looked like a step in the right direction. A 1u power amp with a stocky 300 watts in bridged mode seemed like a great product on paper. When I got mine and plugged it in the problems started from the off. First I got a really loud earth buzz type sound with nil from the guitar. Doing all the usual trouble shooting like checking leads and connections yielded nothing. I powered the thing back up and the thing started to go on fire! A first for me I some twenty odd years of playing. Obviously I powered the thing down pronto and by sheer luck it hadn't been put in the rack otherwise the bits near it could have been damaged. Returned to rocktron for refund. I asked rocktron to fill me in on the fault when they got a look at the unit..That was a few months back and I have heard nil back. I wont be buying another piece of rocktron gear again.

It Works

By Cameron Pierre

from London

Comments about Rocktron Velocity 300 150W Rack Power Amp:

My Digitech GSP 1101 has finally come alive after experimenting with different speaker setups for years I finally took the plunge. Up to this point I had been using a Tubeworks MosValve MV 962 power amp which is a fantastic amplifier in itself, but always felt that something was missing. Enter the Velocity 300. It actually does everything it says on the tin. I am running it into a pair of 1 x 12 cabs loaded with EVs. Rocktron's unique "Speaker Reactance Simulation" circuitry makes a huge difference to the overall sound of the power amp. So far I have gigged it with no problems for 8 months and loving it.

Comments about Rocktron Velocity 300 150W Rack Power Amp:

I have had this for about a month and I am enjoying it thus far. Using it with an Orange 2 x 12 and Kemper unit. Easy to setup and dial in with my guitars and plenty of volume for my needs. No huge coloring of the sounds out of the Kemper with this unit.
