Rocktron Gainiac

THis preamp is just an ok preamp. The clean is really nice sounding warm and very usable with effects. The distortion was good but not over the top. Its a small unit not very wide and heavey. i think it has 2 tubes in it. i would say the clean was very nice on it.

Tube sweetness!

The clean channel of the Gainiac 2 is amazing. The distortion channel can get overdive to the max, without sounding muddy or spongy. If a different sound is desired, the 12AX7 tube can be changed to any 12AX7 tube of choice. I Use the Gainiac 2 with a Marshall MG100 half-stack. The MG100 alone sounds dry and hollow, with no sound projection from the cabinet, not at all what they are known for. However... With the Gainiac 2, all of a sudden I have a new amp...with glassy & warm cleans, and seriously crunchy, clean distortion (not a fuzz box)...and the sound projection from the cabinet now is absolutely killer!!! Simply stated- It makes my solid-state MG100 half-stack sound like a tube amp. If it were lost or stolen I would gladly replace it. In my opinion, anyone looking to turn a solid-state amp into a true tube sounding amp, the Gainiac 2 will do it.I hope this review helps.

A decent guitar preamp

I tested out this preamp unit for a friend a few weeks back and I had mixed results. I liked the unit for guitar and bass amplification but I did not like it for vocals (which it was not made for anyway). The unit colored the sound in a way that I did not like very much. I tested the preamp with a Sure SM57 and several MXL mics on both male and female voices. If you need a inexpensive preamp for instruments this may be a good choice, but if you need a preamp for vocal tracks I would consider looking elsewhere.
