OK. I am not saying that there is no use for pad savers, since obviously everyone wants their pads to last as long as possible. There are ways to help pads last: never eat right before playing without brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth thoroughly. Do NOT chew gum or eat candy while playing - even sugarless will wreak havoc with the pads on your flute/piccolo. Swab out your flute with a cloth, and/or use a pad saver, when you are finished playing, so that moisture does not accumulate/sit in your flute/piccolo body and foot areas especially, since moisture is not the friend of your pads. This next part is where a LOT of players run into trouble: store your swab or pad saver AWAY FROM YOUR INSTRUMENT YOU JUST CLEANED! It does no good to go to all the trouble of drying/cleaning your flute/piccolo so carefully, and making sure the moisture is drawn away from the pads s they are preserved, if you then toss your spit rag or damp pad saver into your case. Worse yet, I have kids come to lessons with their pad savers living in their flutes! (It does not smell nice after a while, believe me... 8-0 eeek!) The best of all worlds is for the cleaning gear to live in a whole different world than your flute -- i.e., in a pocket of a case cover, in a gig bag, in a backpack carrier = somewhere besides right on top of those pristine keys you want to maintain. This includes the cute, fuzzy pad savers, too - never, but never should they take up residence in the case, or worse, in your instrument itself.
