Overview

For the TubeMeister 18 Twelve (18W 1x12") combo, Mr. Hughes and Herr Kettner packed all their know-how and over a quarter of a century's passion for tube amps into a remarkably compact chassis. Thanks to German engineering, it can go from a roar to a whisper, shaking the boards on stage, tingling spines in the studio, and raising goose-bumps in the still of night-even during silent recording.

Serving up three different sounds at the touch of a footswitch, the soulful Tube-Meister 18 is the go-to guitar amp for gigging. Its four-step power soak brings the sound of the big stage into small clubs and your own four walls. And courtesy of the built-in Red Box and silent recording capability, you can lay down pro-quality tracks at any time day or night.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TM18/12 TubeMeister 18W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This is absolutely the loudest 18 watt amp I've ever heard. I had a guy on stage next to me with a Mesa half stack, and for fun we cranked them both up and he still couldn't drown me out. The clean and crunch sounds are really good with this amp. I prefer a little more distortion (high gain), but if you kick on the boost on the dirty channel you get high gain. As long as you're good at using your guitar's volume knob to adjust tone through a tube amp, this little guy definitely fits the bill.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TM18/12 TubeMeister 18W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

After using a variety of amps over the years, I know what I lean towards when it comes to tone, sound quality, features, and simplicity when I play. Since I live in a condo, the need for a lower power and sized amp fit my needs best. Not too much info or reviews on this amp, since it just came out earlier this year. Could mainly find info and video review for the Tubemeister 18 w/ 10" speaker. One of the complaints about the original Tubemeister 18 combo amp was that it should have a 12" speaker instead of the 10". Ironically, the demo's I saw for the head version of the Tubemeister 18 amp were usually played through a 12" cabinet or larger. The price difference between this amp and the original version was worth it.
To determine whether or not I was willing to take the chance on this amp I went to a local music store and tried out the only H&K amp they had just get an idea. It was a Tubemeister 36 head through a 12" speaker cabinet. Happy with what I heard, I took a chance and bought the 18 Twelve online. The amp had everything I wanted on paper... and needless to say... it turned out to be what I wanted. I've been playing if for over a month. I use Gibson guitars, an SG, Les Paul Studio, and a Firebird, and they sound great through this amp. At home I will mainly use the 1 watt setting. It's plenty loud enough. I often tempt angering the neighbors with the 5 watt setting as well. I would have to say, for me this amp has the sound and versatility I want. However, it may not be for everyone. Up until now my favorite amps have been Marshall and Fender. To me, the lead channel on this amp has some similar Marshall crunch, perhaps a little more of a modern version. Some negative reviews have commented saying it was too buzzy... I would say play with knobs on the amp as well as your guitar. My amp is not buzzy at all. In fact it's dead quiet when sitting idle. No hiss, no buzz, or strange crackling sounds that some lower priced tube amps can have. The cleans may not be as buttery as a fender, but to me it has a bit more of a chimeyness similar to that of a Vox amp.
Another complaint I've read online, was that the reverb is weak. I'll admit, it would be nice to have just a little bit more range in the reverb, but unless you want to sound like you're inside a huge cavern, the reverb is fine. It is a bit odd that the reverb knob is located on the back of the amp though. Not a big deal. You also can't turn on/off the reverb with the separate footswitch. After using a variety of amps over the years, I know what I lean towards when it comes to tone, sound quality, features, and simplicity when I play.
I bought this mainly for home use, but If I want to get out again, jam with some friends, or in a venue with a group... I know I have enough power to do so. Could even plug straight into a PA system. I would have to say for what this amp cost, not including the foot switch is kind of cheaping out a bit. Was concerned about the made in China, along with the made in china tubes, but seems well built, and the tubes sound pretty good to me. Could always swap them out to give a slight change of character if I choose later. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase

      Amazing little amp!

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TM18/12 TubeMeister 18W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I am new to electric guitar playing and this is my first amplifier purchase. I couldn't be happier with the TM18/12. The sound is superb, it is lightweight so I can take it anywhere, and the blue control panel lighting is gorgeous! H&K is engineered in Germany and have a very high reputation in Europe/UK/USA. Two features that I love are Power Soak and Red Box. Power Soak is a must for the home guitarist not wanting to disturb others and Red Box with an optional interface allows me to recored my playing with full range of amplification (regardless of Power Soak settings) into GarageBand. I imagine this amp will serve my needs for years to come.
