This is a great head. It is a single ply coated head, similar to the Evans G1 Coated. I haven't used it on toms, but it goes great on a snare. This head on the batter side with your choice of a snareside head is awesome. You can get a great sound out your drum. It does have some ring to it, but that's just the drum's resonance. You could dampen it if you want. Overall, this is a wonderful drum head for your snare and probably for your toms as well.

I used to think that if a snare drum didn't sound good with a Remo Ambassador on it then it was not a good drum. I was wrong, it was usually the Ambassador drum head that was the problem, not the snare drum. I know, the Ambassador is regarded as the industry standard but just because it's traditionally the most popular head and been around since the beginning of time it doesn't mean it's the best. To me, it's an average snare drumhead, at best. It has always sounded too bright and then sounds flat in a short period of time, no matter how I tune my snare drum. I quit wasting my money on Ambassadors about 5 years ago and now use Evans reverse power dot heads or Evans G Plus 12mm heads which are a little bit thicker single ply heads and the difference is obvious compared to an Ambassador. I will say the Remo CS reverse dot head is very good and that's basically an Ambassador with a black dot on the reverse side, but it's the dot that gives the drum sound more focus and pop and will make the head more durable so to me, it makes a huge difference. The coating on the Remo Ambassador seems to wear off quicker than the Evans G1, which is Evans version of the Ambassador, and certainly much quicker than an Aquarian texture coated head which I've never experienced the coating coming off on those heads and those are decent 10mm batter heads also. I would even take an Attack single ply coated head over an Ambassador. Perhaps back in the 60s and 70s the Ambassador was the best but now there are so many other batter side snare drumheads that are much better.

Comments about Remo Ambassador Coated Head:

For my Alesis DM10X Professional Kit, I needed drum heads that were more durable than the stock Alesis heads. While they were high quality, they also ripped quite easily, and I wanted a set that was more durable and true to life. Without question, this was a great purchase. The one thing that caught me off-guard was the durable coating that this particular head had, which I thought was pretty cool. For anyone wishing to make their e-kit sound better, this also helps because of its tighter fit around the triggers. The triggers are definitely much more sensitive after this purchase, and it really helps create a natural sound. All-in-all, I highly recommend this as the first company to go to when replacing your drum heads. Do some research, and find out which heads you think would suit you the best (or do what I did and just purchase the cheapest set, haha!).

Comments about Remo Ambassador Coated Head:

Can't go wrong with single ply batters. Very resonant. Lots of tone. Durable. They are very versatile. I tend to use them with no muffling and get great results on toms and snares. But if by chance you need to remove some of the overtones, you could always dampen (whichI find no need for regardless of genre). If you go with a head that already sounds dead, double ply or pre-muffled, you can't add more resonance.

In my opinion this is the most versatile drum head in the world. You can tune it as high or low as you want, muffle it however you want, it's great. I use these exclusively on anything I hit with sticks.

Comments about Remo Ambassador Coated Head:

Got a 12" and a 14" for my two toms on my Gretsch kit and they sound great. I'm using these as batters with Clear Ambassadors as resos and it's a winning combination. I like my drums to be really dead sounding and these are perfect for that but they can also sing, depending on how you tune/muffle them.

I use coated Ambassadors on my vintage Ludwig kit. These heads provide an authentic "vintage" sound on the poplar/mahogany shells with single ply clear heads on the bottoms. I find Ambassadors very easy to tune to desired pitch and also very easy to keep tuned.
