As reviewed by Ivan Rodriguez on 10/25/2012

I purchased the 12-inch tablatone, and I am fascinated by all that it can do. The bass tone is well defined, slaps and open tones sound amazing, and I'm sure as I develop more technique (I had never purchased a frame drum until this one), more magic will happen. Of course what makes this product interesting -- the black gob in the center of the head -- does add its own dimension to the sounds that can be produced, and I need to continue to explore my drum to figure out what's possible! The skin itself also has a nice feel, just the slightest bit fuzzy. The fact that it can be tuned based on 12 points is always reassuring in that the pitch is more controllable and fine-tuning is possible. One thing that I don't particularly enjoy (and this is entirely a personal preference) is the fact that the skin and gob are synthetic. The gob looks like plastic, not traditional iron fillings as the tabla's is known for. The only reason this would bother me is because I imagined that the sound could be negatively affected, but to my surprise it sounds fine! Plus, due to this, it appears that no black residue will rub onto fingertips and dirty the drum. Ultimately, I am impressed and satisfied with Remo's creation.
