Switched from the Steve Gadd. I like having the wood in case I want some volume on a different drum or woodblock, cowbell etc.

Comments about Regal Tip Ed Thigpen Wire Brushes:

I have been using this model for the past five years. During the past two years I have played 20-25 brush-only gigs per month, as well as using them on blues and classic rock gigs about two to three songs per set. Most of my performing is jazz.

The point is these ARE sturdy if properly played; i.e., like brushes and not in lieu of sticks. I go through two pairs about every fifteen months, so they are definitely sturdy for the use they are getting. More importantly, the wood area is perfect for the brush-only gigs for Latin and Brazilian grooves.

My only complaint is some production runs come with wood ends that tend to work loose after a few weeks, but Elmer's Glue solves that issue (and permanently).

I also love the fact that I can fan out my left brush and use a narrower fan on the right one for playing time on the left hand and ostinatos with the right. The brushes maintain their respective fans until I choose to change them. They seem to lock into position with a slight twist of the handle. Bottom line: if you are a brush player these brushes (and calf heads) are pure heaven in my opinion.

Comments about Regal Tip Ed Thigpen Wire Brushes:

I had hoped that these were a holy grail of brushes: Retractable, Wood Handle (For Cross Stick), Rubber edge (For doing those rim-hit double-strokes... do those have a name?), and a loop for hanging or cymbal scratches.

Unfortunately, these are some pretty average brushes. The wood handle is useless, and they aren't especially bouncy. The handle feels very light, and doesn't get any sound out of the rim. I know that doing rim clicks with brushes is kind of an odd purpose, but think it would be super useful to be able to do. I've had them a little while though, and they've held together very well.

Next time I'm going to go for a pair of non-Retractable, wood handle wire brushes with the little metal button on the handle to do cymbal scratches.

Comments about Regal Tip Ed Thigpen Wire Brushes:

These are not easy to open or close. The wires are just a dead sound on the drum head. Soft sounding for practice or in a small closed area but for playing out, forget it! I don't care for these at all. No pop and so soft on the cymbal they create barely a whisper of sound. Another pair that sits in a box unused. I hate wasting money.

Great Brushes with a pro feel

Comments about Regal Tip Ed Thigpen Wire Brushes:

I have been using the Ed Thigpen brushes since they first came out and I like the way they feel and respond. The only negative thing I have to say is that the brushes themselves do not retract all the way in and they get bent and caught when I try to put them in my stick bag. In the past all pro brushes retracted all the way in so this didn't happen. Other than this I do like these brushes.
