Comments about Recording King RKO-3S Open Back Banjo:

I'm mostly a guitar guy, but when my landlord, an antique dealer picked up a junk banjo years ago and gave it to me, I was intrigued. For a long time I couldn't get the hang of banjos, but one day something clicked, and now I can't put 'em down! I bought this RKO 3S because I wanted an inexpensive, old-timey looking open back 5-string, and wanted something I could retrofit if I got the urge. I love the 12-bracket look as opposed to the 18,24, or God help us 32-bracket style. Comparison seems to reveal that more brackets yield slightly louder sound, but I'm not at that level yet. The neck has a delightful v shape, and feels a little cozier than the other two banjos I now have. Also, the neck is listed as maple, which inspires a little more confidence in a neck less than an inch thick down in those First Four. Up here in sleepy New England, a five-string banjo draws a lot of interest also, that our guitars once garnered. -('Oh..., a flametop? Hmm.., how nice...) Playing on the sea wall, this thing draws a crowd.

Comments about Recording King RKO-3S Open Back Banjo:

I was looking for a cheap, yet nice banjo that would not break the bank. Recording King has a great reputation, so I took a chance on this model. The fit and finish were great as the set-up at the store had been well done, and the stain, rubbed satin finish had a great look. When I got it home and tuned it up it had a great warm, mellow sound. It played very well. And it is very light for playing and transporting. I had only one problem that was in no way a fault of this banjo. I figured out very quickly that I wanted a resonator style. As I only had the money for one banjo I sadly returned this one. If your looking for one with the things I commented on, especially for a starter model, but this!

Comments about Recording King RKO-3S Open Back Banjo:

This is my first experience with a 5 string banjo although I have played guitar for 10+ years. For the price I am not sure you could beat this as a beginner banjo. The feel of the neck is wonderful and it is very comfortable to play up and down the fretboard. I have no issues with it staying in tune despite practicing for hours at a time. I purchased a floor model as they had no other in the store. The action on it is great and I have no complaints about the sound or playability. Cosmetically I love the look. Mine appears to be a much darker brown than what it is on the website, but that is no problem by me. I also am a huge fan of only 12 brackets as 24 looks too busy. My only complaint is that I wish it came with an armrest, but for $200 this is an excellent instrument that I would recommend to anyone

Comments about Recording King RKO-3S Open Back Banjo:

Good for overall banjo use. The tone of the strings is nice, but you have to be covering the open back, otherwise the tone is not clear. Good for fingerstyle and clawhammer.
