  • May be the best value in serious solid state amps.

As reviewed by Geoffrey on 1/2/2011

I don't understand the unwarranted hate for Ravens in other forums. It's very likely that the people who hate them don't own them, however. (Perhaps they assume they must be bad since they're solid state.) It seems also that a few reviewers here received some unfortunate defectives. Note the price, though: It's close in price to $150--not $1,500. $150 is very hard to part with--it isn't much, though, in the context of quality musical instruments. Sure, the Raven won't match a Marshall stack, Mesa, Fender, or other legendary tube amp. I love both the clean and gain channels from the RG60. Very good choice in tones--very smooth. Obviously, not everyone's favorites, though. Had no problems with the tuner--matched both Korg/Quik-tune--nifty (not a replacement, though). Heavy-duty road-worthy cab with a strong metal mesh front--I found the amp not to seem that heavy--it's very well balanced for carrying. For those of you starting out in guitar on a budget--I suggest skipping the low-end Vyprs, Spyders, and the Raven RG20--stretch things a little and start with this, instead--you'll find yourself a big step ahead "on the curve of knowledge." Then, if those competitor modeling "practice" amps still interest you, purchase one, or better yet, larger upgraded--even well-regarded tube versions! You'll get more bang for your buck if you decide to sell this for the upgrade than for those popular beginner modeling amps. Otherwise, you'll likely purchase some good pedals for this that mimic or greatly surpass beginner modeling amps' functions. You'll then learn about what you want to hear in a tube amp. You see, the RG60 has 60W and a powerful 12" speaker (pretty much unheard of in this price range): So, it's more powerful than popular solid-state beginner "practice" amps--better (true RMS) amp power comes from better heavy-duty circuitry generating far less heat, noise, and unwanted distortion. The result, predictably, is better tone. Given similar quality, 12" speakers surpass 10" and lesser. (These statements generally indicate some truth in this context of comparing solid state models.) So, the RG60 has a very good speaker and power--given a reasonable environment, it's certainly more than loud enough to jam and gig. You may hook it up very easily to a speaker cab. I own a Vox Valvetronix 30 as well--it's "warmer" in tone--thanks to its tube preamp (the Vox is smaller, yet, pricier)--nonetheless, I like the RG60 really well, though--I consider the amps pretty much equivalent--yet in differing contexts. (The RG60 is better with pedals and is louder--it has a different tone, yet not one that's inferior--the Valvetronix is a modeling amp offering many tones. The Vox VT-30 is today's updated counterpart.) Apples and Oranges. Thanks, GC and MF!: I don't know who is behind the design and fabrication of your Raven house brand: Surprisingly, though, this model is pretty good--not to mention an extraordinary value!

  • what a great amp!

As reviewed by alex on 12/27/2010

i went to guitar center today, i had a mind set on the rg60, i got the rg100 but for some reason i cant find it on here but the rg 100 and rg60 are the samething just ones bigger, and lemme tell you, clean sound is amazing, distortion, pure asomeness! and it works great with pedals. what i love about it is that theres no fancy buttons and no fancy digital stuff and there is just reverb and tht is great, its just srait up. just a great amp, and for the price you cant beat it, i got the rg100 for 200$!!!
