Essential whenever or wherever you're unable to crank full performance volume and tone. The concept is simple. A speaker is mounted in a completely closed, hinged cabinet with a microphone suspended inside. The cab has 1/4" in and outs, as well as a mic out to the mixing console. For recording, Isolation lets you record your amp full out, reflecting your true tone without waking the neighbors or inspiring visits from the cops. 12" Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. 18"W x 18"H x 31-1/2"D.

How to use it: Simply plug your 8 ohm speaker output from any amplifier source into the 1/4" speaker in/out of the ISO. With the top lid or rear compartment door open, tailor your sound as you would with any cabinet. (Note that the Vintage 30 Celestion is 60 watts so be aware that it cannot handle the same power as a 4x12 full of them). Next, close the lid or rear compartment and secure the latches. Now, plug a standard XLR cable into the XLR output and connect to any source that accepts XLR mic level. This can be anything from a channel input of the PA system to the smallest USB interface for recording. Finally, adjust for optimum level and you are done. Remember that there is no such thing as total silence, but the ISO cab approach eliminates most of the sound coming from speaker and allows use of loud amplifiers for home recording in situations where you can't blast and "Silent Stage" situations in which many players are forced to degrade their experience by using digital modeling products.

Not for me.

Comments about Randall Isolation 12 Speaker Cab:

Its possible that this might work for someone else, but it wasn't the magic solution I was hoping for. I'm not going to list pros, because those are pretty obvious, and are pretty much listed in the description. Cons: Instead of room noise, you get box noise, which is odd sounding and pretty loud. The cabinet design is also not the best, so you'd have to play around with your eq a lot to get the sound you want. This is hard to do because closing the box changes the sound, but so does turning down the volume so you can open it. I can't say I spent a lot of time trying to record with it, but I wasn't getting anything I liked at all. Also, mine did not come with the 10 inch gooseneck, and the mount for the mic was on the side instead of next to the speaker. I ended up going back to my normal combo speaker cab, which I had feared would be too loud, but its not really that bad. The iso cab didn't offer me very good sounds for any level of clean or distorted, at least not what I could get out of it. (My amp is a Mesa Stiletto, sounds great through its own cab.) I'm going to return this item to GC and hope I get a reasonable amount of money back.

Comments about Randall Isolation 12 Speaker Cab:

I recorded the sound and it was too thin, especially the clean sound. Even when I added tons of low and mid it wasn't satisfactory. Maybe someone who works with software could get it how they wanted, but I returned the iso cab. I need a good low volume sound in my condo. I ordered a Peavey classic mini 20. I believe going with the MSDI out with speaker off OR attenuating down to 1 watt with a miked cab will do the trick.

Comments about Randall Isolation 12 Speaker Cab:

I use 2 of these to record guitars in my home studio. There are a few things to note when looking at these cabs: First, the main purpose is to isolate the microphone from outside noise, while it does cut the room volume, other acoustic treatments must be added to drop the room noise considerably (I place mine in a closet with sound absorbing blankets draped over them and lining the walls). When recorded, there is no bleed from other instruments or outside noises, which is great for apartments or city homes where noise can be a problem.

The recorded tone through the Vintage 30 speaker is great, once you have broken in the speaker. You have to use the monitored signal to adjust your tone to what you want recorded, but you then know exactly what is being recorded and there is no gray area of what will be on the track.

Overall this is an excellent product. While there could be some improvements made to more drastically effect room volume, the goal of isolating the sound source to provide a controlled environment for recording is aced. I recommend this product all the time.
