  • One Killer, Super METAL Amp!

As reviewed by Wade Belgarde on 10/9/2013

Let me begin by saying I'm an 80's to modern metal head, as well as an electronics hardware and software engineer. I play an ESP LTD EX Outlaw with active EMG 81 and 60 pickups. I purchased this amp for practice and recording. I'm very impressed with this amp for several reasons. First of all this amp has many amazing sounding metal tones even at bedroom levels, but can also do some cleans, blues, rock and hard rock too! The tones have a very tight sound, especially on the low end. The tightness makes shredding and fast playing sound very clear and well defined! There's no mud in there whatsoever! Every string in a chord is so well defined, it took my ears a while to get used to it at first. For years I've been playing a 6505+ 112 combo which doesn't have much of this quality to it, which is why I think it took me some getting used to. The great metal tone IMHO is really due to it's non-fizzy tightness on the low end as well as the less woody, more metallic sounds that ring out right when you first strike a string with the pick. The amp is very responsive to touch dynamics and has very little hiss or noise, even on high gain settings. The single tone control is is greatly augmented due to the tone stack shift (T.S.S.) switch included on this line of amps. The T.S.S. switch has 3 positions and each position has a very unique voice, each with a purpose. It's very easy to dial in a great tone quickly on this amp. The speaker emulated recording output sounds really great and it has very good signal strength. Since this is a low wattage power amp the emulated output lacks some depth of sound, which I expected since only a high power tube amp is capable of producing such depth with speaker emulation. The built in load simulator makes this a great amp for practicing and recording silently too. This amp has impressive built quality as well. It's a hefty little head nearly half the size of a full size head. It rubber feet that have greater than usual surface area, I think feature will definitely allow it to stay where you put it in most situations. Also the aesthetics definitely scream metal. Mike Fortin had a big hand in designing this line of amps for Randall, he is a legendary metal amp designer and modifier whose handmade amps and mods sell for thousands of dollars. His participation in this design very evident in the metal tones accomplished by this little beast. I hope this helps, and stay metal my friends!
