Overview

The QSC K8 8" powered loudspeaker features a 1000-watt Class-D power module, and its extremely compact size won't intrude on audience sightlines. Its 105° wide dispersion is a major advantage when the audience is up close to the loudspeaker. Low frequencies extend to ~61Hz (-10dB) and the unit outputs an amazing 127dB.

QSC's K8 speaker features a 1-3/4" HF device in its 2-way enclosure. The primary differentiator is the resulting output dispersion-the K8 being the widest at 105° and the K12 the narrowest at 75°. This radical approach is achievable due to a process called Directivity Matched Transition (DMT). DMT allows QSC to take advantage of a fundamental law of acoustics: smaller diameter woofers have wider coverage patterns than larger ones. The K Series matches the HF device to the LF dispersion, allowing for the smoothest and flattest frequency response possible across the entire sound field.

Add to this advanced DSP processing and an enclosure molded from ABS-a material far more rugged and sonically pleasing than conventional plastics-and the QSC K8 Speaker delivers exceptional performance in this category of loudspeakers.

Several proprietary QSC DSP technologies are incorporated into the K8 PA speaker. One such technology is Digital Extension and Excursion Processing (DEEP). DEEP allows the K8 to deliver levels of low-frequency extension previously impossible in enclosures of this size. Intrinsic Correction, first featured in QSC line-array technology, use dozens of spatially averaged measurements mapped to the processor to deliver smooth and accurate reproduction across the entire sound field.

Preventing amplifier clipping or overload is QSC's proprietary GuardRail technology. GuardRail closely monitors the input voltage and controls the amplifier output stage before the onset of clipping. Unlike typical clip limiters, when GuardRail is activated, the results are all but undetectable-there's none of the typical "pumping" associated with other methods. In addition, user EQ controls are provided to select between subwoofer settings (EXTSUB, VOCAL, or FLAT response).

The K8 speaker boasts other user-friendly features. For example, when the PA speaker is pole-mounted, the Tilt-Direct pole socket converts to a 7.5° down-tilt with a simple 180° rotation of the dial. A locking IEC power cord is included, preventing accidental disconnect during a performance. For installed applications, connecting a commonly available potentiometer to the unit's Euroblock connector allows the operator to have gain control from a remote location. Multiple K Series units can be daisy-chained together to one centralized control. Additionally, the QSC K8 Speaker enters Standby mode after 5 minutes of inactivity, conserving power.

The entire PA package is housed in rugged and sonically friendly ABS (the sub in birch plywood) with steel grilles and carry-friendly ergonomic aluminum handles.

Processing, Connectivity & Monitoring

The brain of the system is its expansive digital signal processing. While the DSP functions are optimized using Intrinsic Correction, DEEP, DMT and GuardRail technologies (with the high-pass filter included for use with subwoofer systems), two XLR-combi inputs, each with its own Level control, are provided. Both accommodate line-level inputs and one may be switched to microphone level sensitivity. Phono (RCA) input jacks are also included for connection of consumer electronics sources. Dual XLR outputs are provided for dual "loop-thru" XLR/M connectors and a single XLR jack is available as a summed output. All 3 input sources may be used at once and mixed via the 2 Gain control knobs.

Input Panel LED indicators are provided for Power, Signal Present, Mic Level Sensitivity and Limit annunciation. A front-mounted power LED may be disabled by means of a rear panel switch when desired or set so it indicates when the limit circuitry has been engaged.

Waveguide

Each QSC K8 model incorporates a conical waveguide that maintains pattern control all
the way down to the crossover frequency. The coverage angles of the waveguides are tailored for a smooth transition from woofer to compression driver with far less "waistbanding" or other directivity related anomalies than other products in this class.

Suspension and Mounting

The K-Series 2-way PA speaker may be pole-mounted, suspended, or yoke-mounted. The K8 yoke accessory kit (not included) allows for either horizontal or vertical yoke mounting, providing a flexible means of attaching The K-Series loudspeakers to a building structure or truss. When suspended deployment is required, M10 threaded inserts support vertical or horizontal suspension, while the integral pole mount socket accommodates 35mm speaker poles for use on a speaker stand or over a sub. The pole socket is designed so that the speaker may be angled down 7.5° in order to cover the audience while keeping acoustic energy off reflective walls and ceilings.

I own a Bose L1 classic and had been looking for something smaller to reduce the number of trips to and from the car. I was prepared to sacrifice sound quality for a lighter more portable system when I came upon the QSC K8. At 1000 watts, I was blown away by how clean and loud these can get without distortion. Frankly, these little speakers rival my Bose for quality and the DEEP setting gives me plenty of low frequency without needing an optional sub woofer. Many powered speakers use digital signal processing technology to create the illusion of big sound from a small package. After a certain volume level, this technology distorts the sound so you can never get full use out of the speaker. Not so with the QSC K8. Their engineers have managed to overcome this problem and the speaker sounds great cranked up at full volume. I purchased two of these and my total setup time is about 5 minutes. With two inputs, each speaker is actually a small PA and there is a balanced line out to send your mixed sound to a house sound board if needed. To summarize, a road weary musician will welcome these as lightweight alternative to almost any sound system on the market today-big or small. The show business phrase: "Great gear packs small but plays big" would definitely apply to QSC K series. Buy as many as you can afford. You will not be disappointed.

I've had six of these K8's since they've came out and they are some of my favorite speakers because of sound and size.. great all around sound...when they work. The main downfall is the quality of the low end driver.. I don't know if it's because these little things hit so hard on the low end, but 3 of the 6 I've owned have had the low end driver cone separate from the outer ring which makes the speaker useless if you're in the middle of a gig..because the bass distorts bad. Luckily one of these speakers can get you thru the rest of your gig if this same thing happens to you but hopefully QSC figures out something to get this issue resolved. I'm almost afraid to use these with in DEEP mode because of that problem so I would definitely suggest a separate subwoofer so you can run it in EXT SUB mode. Other than that one issue, these little speakers are some of the best I've ever used in 13 years of being a DJ.

Perfect

By Joe Ambrose

from Philadelphia, PA

Full Sounding Active Speaker. Just one 1,000 watt speaker produces such a clean and clear sound. My old Behringer 12 400 watt speakers are now history. It's like night and day. The QSC is crystal clear giving great separation between acoustic guitar and vocals, allowing my mix to sparkle and bass to boom like it should. (even out of an 8" speaker...wow) No more muddy sound for me. This cab is also super quiet and LIGHT. Huge dispersion and power. I play with it behind me, no reason for any monitors. Everyday I get more impressed by this. Two thumbs up QSC!!!

Big, Clean Sound in a Compact Package

By William Harrison

from Detroit, MI

I play accordion in a Zydeco band that gets pretty loud. My main squeezebox is a Roland FR-1 V-accordion that sounds great through my Roland KC-350 but I wanted something smaller and lighter that would be easy to take to jam sessions. Smaller keyboard amps aren't loud enough - and aren't really that much lighter than the Roland. Although this speaker is very compact and weighs less than 30 pounds, it has plenty of punch and sounds super clean. I've run both the accordion and my Kurzweil stage piano through it. It sounds awesome with either instrument and delivers plenty of volume for even large clubs.

Total quality

By Raymond

These are extremely diverse speakers--really like the dual inputs with dual controls. I can't imagine needing the full power of these speakers. I didn't buy the QSC speaker bag. I purchased a Protege brand 25-inch rolling duffel at Walmart for $20 and added some 1 and 2 inch foam from Hobby Lobby. Not only is this cheaper but I have the option of rolling the speakers.

Small Size/Big Sound

By Dave Prince

from Bogart, Georgia 30622

I tried these out tonight in a fairly large room. The dispersion is perfect as the dance floor gets most of the sound. I used one of my Mackie subs with 2-18's and I could have used the other. These things are that powerful. I eq'd my mic before the show and got the vocal sounding amazingly accurate. I traded in one k-12 for these two and have to say that they sound just as good. If you are using a sub with them, then don't waste your money on the 12 as it doesn't give a lot of bass anyway, that is unless you want it to throw further. I'm gonna sleep with these tonight :>) I can't wait to pair them with the QSC K-Sub.

QSC K8 Rocks

By Mike

from Toledo

This speaker is the best keyboard and PA speaker I have ever owned. It has plenty of power and low end for my Korg Synth and provides enough low end for bass in a jazz and light pop setting. It is lightweight, has plenty of inputs and is totally versatile and I ended up buying two.

Amazing

By Good Time Entertainment

from Middletown, CT.

Unbelievable! I went to Guitar Center looking to upgrade from my Matrix setup I was dead set on the Bose L1. But I was not impressed by the amount of bass it put out. When the guy helping me suggested I listen to these nice looking little speakers I wasn't expecting much but man was I wrong. When I got them home I gave them a better test I turned these up until it was uncomfortably loud and they were still crisp and clear, the bass is good for country or rock but not enough for hip hop. I am so impressed I think I'm going to check out a sub made by QSC. Very pleased!

Small box.........big, sweet sound

By Rusty

from Stow, OH

Great sound in a tiny box. A nice reduction of strain on this old player's spine. So far, only used at rehearsal but the sound quality seems to justify the price. Should be able to nicely handle vocals in a small to medium-sized club or ballroom. The dual-angle pole socket is a great feature.
