Overview

Breaking the boundaries that once defined portable sound, the K12 delivers massive power, impeccable audio and uncompromising workmanship that stands up to the rigors of professional use. Even more impressive is you get all this in a remarkably compact, lightweight and stylish enclosure for effortless handling and setup. Outperforming many of its larger, 15-in. competitors, the K12 cranks out sound that seems almost unbelievable for its size.

Under the hood you'll find an efficient Class-D power module that pumps out 1000 watts of clean, distortion-free sound with crisp highs and deep, tight lows. With 75 degrees of coverage, the K12's 12-in. woofer drives low frequencies down to 48Hz making it ideal for a wide range of applications, especially DJing or live reinforcement of instruments. Equally comfortable as a stage monitor, the K12 enclosure has an angled side for use as a low-profile, horizontal wedge and a flat side for proper side-fill use.

Processing Technology

QSC incorporates several proprietary DSP technologies into the K12, including Digital Extension and Excursion Processing (DEEP). DEEP allows K12 to deliver levels of low-frequency extension previously impossible in enclosures of this size. Another innovation is Intrinsic Correction, which uses dozens of spatially-averaged measurements mapped to the processor to deliver smooth and accurate reproduction across the entire sound field. Preventing amplifier clipping or overload is QSC's proprietary GuardRail technology, which monitors the input voltage and controls the amplifier output stage before the onset of clipping.

Connectivity & Monitoring

The back of the K12 features two XLR-combi inputs, each with its own level control. Both accommodate line-level inputs and one may be switched to microphone level sensitivity. Phono (RCA) input jacks are also included for connection of consumer electronics sources. Dual XLR outputs are provided for dual "loop-thru" XLR/M connectors and a single XLR jack is available as a summed output. All three input sources may be used at once and mixed via the two gain control knobs. In addition, user EQ controls are provided to select between different subwoofer settings. For installed applications, connecting a commonly available potentiometer to the unit's Euroblock connector allows the operator to have gain control from a remote location. Multiple K Series units can be daisy-chained together to one centralized control.

Suspension and Mounting

The K12 may be pole-mounted, suspended, or yoke-mounted. The K12 yoke accessory kit (not included) allows for either horizontal or vertical yoke mounting, providing a flexible means of attaching K Series loudspeakers to a building structure or truss. When suspended deployment is required, M10 threaded inserts support vertical or horizontal suspension, while the integral pole-mount socket accommodates 35 mm speaker poles for use on a speaker stand or over a sub. The pole socket is designed so that the speaker may be angled down 7.5 degrees in order to cover the audience while keeping acoustic energy off reflective walls and ceilings.

Being a mobile DJ for 26 years and having used several sets of passive speakers in that time, I wanted to make sure I did my homework before I made the leap into powered speakers. My criteria for the powered speakers was that they: - needed to be under 45 lbs. - have enough power to do a mid-to-large event - sound good when cranked up - have the features I needed (flexible inputs, daisy chaining, etc.). - have a good reputation (quality and warranty) After compiling a list of prospective models, I took a weekend and listened to the models side-by-side (luckily, my local Guitar Center had just about all of them on display for me to test). For each speaker comparison, I: - set all EQ to flat in the source, mixer, and on the speaker itself. - made sure the level was compensated so that the loudness (DB output) to my ears would be the same when I switched between the speakers. - positioned myself in the same position and distance from each speaker - played the same source material in each (and varied the source material as necessary to get a balanced feel for what the speaker could do). - played the speakers at varying volume levels I tried all the top brands and models: Mackie SRM450v2, EV (SXA100+, EV ELX112P), JBL (EON515XT, PRX612M), Yamaha (MS400, DXR12), Behringer (VP1220D, B112D, B912Neo), QSC K12, and Peavey Impulse 12D. During the testing, for any two given speakers, I would pick a better sounding speaker and use that speaker in my next comparison. After I reached the QSC K12 in my testing, I liked the sound so much that I used that as my reference speaker from that point on and went back and compared it against all of the speakers I was testing. It was after this extensive exercise that I determined that the QSC K12, hands down, was the winner (it was also the most expensive, but I wanted to find the best). The reasons I chose the QSC K12: - The sound was the most balanced and natural sounding of any PA speaker I have heard (powered or not). At mid-to-high volumes, most Pro sound speakers have a tendency to overemphasize the high-end and upper mid-range frequencies, which are precisely the ones that cause ear fatigue when you are exposed to them for any length of time. On the K12s, you can particularly note the difference when playing Jazz and Big Band music (for example, Frank Sinatra's vocals sounded neutral and did not exhibit a megaphone/honky quality to it found on the other speakers). - The bass was clean and tight, especially when enabling the deep switch setting on back. No other speakers (with the exception of the Yamaha MS400) could match it's bass response at any volume in this mode. - They come with a 3-year warranty. NOTE: Unlike QSC's stand-alone amplifiers (like their PLA series) which are made in the USA and have a 6-year warranty, these speakers are made in China and have a 3-year warranty. A few weeks after I bought the K12s, I decided to put them to a test at my next DJ event (a mid-size wedding of 175 people) that was held in a converted airplane hangar. As you can imagine, the environment was not well-suited for acoustics (30 foot steel ceiling, cement floor, glass on the entire back wall). However, these speakers turned out to be ideal in such a live environment. Because of their natural sound, they did not generate the ear fatigue that would normally occur with other speakers in this setting. They were also slightly less prone to feedback than what I am used to. Needless to say, I would highly recommend these speakers to anyone who wants the most natural sound from a turnkey sound system (i.e., one where you don't have to contend with separate speakers, amps, equalizers, phase correction, etc.).

I bought 2 of these speakers and paired them with a KW-181 subwoofer. It was great sound for the 4 wedding I used these at. The 5 wedding not so much. We got there and setup our speakers and lights and did a test phase. We noticed on some songs you can hear a rattle noise in the back of both speakers. I t was almost like something is loose. I contacted QSC and they told me to take to a repair center. The closest repair center to me wants money for each speaker to work on them. QSC said I can send them back but I will have to pay shipping which is an arm and a leg from Ohio to California. I am very disappointed in how these held up and how QSC is treating me. Their customer service is awful. I wish guitar center would swap these out for me and they can send them back to QSC. I don't know what to do as a business owner.

K12's Rock the house!

By Big Daddy Walker

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

I have been a DJ for many years and these speakers rock! They blow the Mackie 450 SRM V1's I have out of the water. Easy to use, transport and the clarity is incredible. Well worth the money. I came back after buying my first set within a month and bought another pair. You won't regret your purchase. And QSC gave me a free upgrade on the warranty to 6 years for registering online.

Thank You QSC

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

I would love to write a full review on this produc, however they have placed a limit on length. Few times in my life have I ever purchased a product that exceeded my expectation. This product is lightweight, (Easy onb the back), and produces huge sound !!! The best part is, it behaves more like some sort of studion reference monitor than a PA Speaker. The tones are exceptionally smoothe. I found that there was no longer a need for some of my signal processing between mixer and speaker, (Such as sub harmonic synthesizes and graphics). Also I was impressed that the fans weren't obknoxiously loud. I also really was blown away by the (Deep) circuit when activated. Really brings the low end to life if your listening to them at lower volume. Buy with confidence, you will really like this one !!!!!!!!!

Not so good

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

These speakers are meant to be used with a SUB. If your not going to use a SUB. These are not for you. I would go with EON 515 if your not going to use SUB. The sound on K12 is just 500 on top 500 on bottom. no bass at all.

If you know sound, you will be disapoited

By Sean L.

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

I bought the QSC K12 and Mackie SRM450v2. I placed them side by side and ran tests ranging from simple microphones, MP3 player, keyboard to a complete band sound. You will be disappointed. First of all K12 are NOT 1000W. Thatۡs a marketing lie. I spoke to their support and the speakers have two (2) not bridged 500W amps, so at the best you will get 500W at Clip level power. For my test I had my mixer set to flat and speaker level set to unity (0). No comparison. Mackieۡs had a much cleaner and fuller (wider)sound. K12 were a bit tighter on the si=ound, but no definition for mids and highs, even though they have a dedicated 500W amp. K12ۡs look nice and are light, but for the money the sound was bad.

Great Sounding Speakers

By Tim

from Linton, IN

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

I love the sound of our K12's, but we had an issue with one of them last week....After five gigs, one of the speakers failed. I contacted QSC and they were great to deal with. They said they would take care of it no problem. I feel that this is the best time to review a product, when you actually have to deal with the manufacturer because of a defect....That is what we need to hear, if something goes wrong with the speaker, will it be taken care of? And in this case, they get 5 stars just because tech support was so great to deal with. These sound better than anything we have used, and I am hoping I just got a lemon because we treat these speakers like new born babies when transporting them.

Great Quality, Great Price, and a Warning.

By Michael

from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

The QSC K12 monitors are an excellent set of monitors. The speakers provide a clear, present high end without the sound of acoustic/electronic mixes coming across as 'crispy'. They are great for dj'ing, live performance reinforcement. Be sure to use the 'line' level input switch for live mixes, and 'mic' level for direct microphone usage. The outcome of improper usage results in crackling from the speakers, because the mic level naturally boosts signal coming in from a single microphone. To save yourself the headache, use line level if you plan to connect a mixer to your QSC K12 monitors. Improper usage may cause long term damage over time. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent monitors. Well done, QSC!

The real deal.

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

Origionally I was plannig on getting 2 passive 15" mains and 2 passive 18" subs and using our Yamaha PA to run them. But considering the light weight, quality and the lack of ever needing or wanting more power, via a power amp, these are great. The only thing now is to get a 2nd K-Sub. I wil now use the Yamaha for floor monitors only. The sound is big, punchy and very clean.

K12 - Powerful, Crisp and wont break your back

By Heavy G

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

...I wanted to put together a good sounding, small-mid sized club system. My goals were...simple, minimal pieces (points of failure) and nice tonal range. I heard from several knowlegeable pro audio guys that the QSC K12s were a compelling option...and I have found them to be that and more. They are really polished sounding and you can craft some tasty bass out of them if you tweak the Deep switch and EQ your sound. If you want more thump...add the Sub (I am). Overall...brilliant product...couldnt be happier. Check out a pair and let your ears decide...

good quality

Comments about QSC K12 12" Powered PA Speaker:

i aquired 4 k12's and two k subs. i do sound re-enforcement for various small clients for events with attendance in the 1500 or so, the biggest ive done with the k series equiptment is 1100 +/- 50. the k 12s are of great quality, the sound is phenomenal. the weight to power ratio is unlike any on the market at this particular time. at K watts its about impossible to clip, the 12 has a tight all together resonace. It does move air. I use the K12's as mains, vocals travel far and soft in the ears. and the subs provide good DEEP sound reguardless of their size. i couldnt be happier with the casters on these bad boys and the solid threaded pole pole for the subs and tops.(kudos qsc).. all in all its worth every penny.
