Maybe I can help out on the old Rat versus the new Rat argument.

I had a Rat back in the 80's, and I loved it. Somehow through the ever-shifting, unpredictable and treacherous sands of time (read that "STUPIDITY"), I lost it. Over the ensuing years, I played various other boost / overdirve / distortion pedals including the excellent Chandler Industries Real Tube Driver, Exotic Effect's BB boost (Phenomenal pedal by the way), Tube Screamer, and Boss Super Overdirve to name a few. All were great in their own way.

A few months ago, I was in a pawn shop, and spotted a new model Rat under the glass. On a nostalgic whim, i picked it up and brought it to band practice that night. The other guitar player was excited when he saw what I had, and told a few "back in the day" stories when he used to play one too. I set it on my pedal board, hooked it up, and with one strum it all came back to me! I thought, "THERE YOU ARE - my old friend!" It was instantly recognizable, and I was delighted to hear that familiar character - still there in all it's 80's era glory! Fantastic warmth, incredible string-to-string separation, abundant harmonic content, I could go on and on. I am here to tell you, the new Rat puts just as big a smile on my face as the old one did. i just wonder why it took me so long to come back to one.

The Rat has not left my pedal board ever since, and it's going to stay there. I still use the BB. It is the best clean boost that i have ever played. Between the two, I have all the bases covered with no need to worry any more.

Getchya one!

I am very curious as to why this thing has such great reviews. I guess if the only distortion you have used is a ds-1 or some distortion that came from an amp modeler then this thing sounds better. I decided to give this new Chinese made Rat a head-to-head test with an older Rat I have from the early 90s (1991 I think). There was no shock at all in which the winner was. The new Rat has a very harsh and ugly sound that is not musical at all. I tried pairing with some other distortion pedals I had including an old Big Muff Pi, a Marshall Guv-nor, Metal-Zone, and and even a BK Butler Tube Driver. None of which helped this little sucker out.I would suggest seaching out one of the older Rats that were made in Michigan. They can be ungodly rude sounding, but with an amazing cruch and musical quality not found in most modern distortions. Props to ProCo for making one of the best sounding distortions ever made. Unfortunately, their pedal-making turned sour when they decided to have their stuff made in China.

Comments about Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal:

Vintage Rats go for ridiculous prices. They sound awesome. Was my favorite distortion till it stopped working, didn't even have it a year. Refuse to have it fixed, this thing is junk. In 20 years are these Chinese pedals going to be worth hundreds of dollars or even function? I don't think so

Comments about Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal:

I use The Rat to crunch up my bass for a few songs. With the distortion set low >9:00 and the filter around 3:00 for the warmer side and volume to unity somewhere around 1:00, it is very pleasing and responds to digging in with a nice, juicy break-up that really carries through the mix. The battery lasts a long time and sounds just as good with a 9V brick, Voodoo Lab in my case.

Great distortion without the muddiness and noise typical of cheaper pedals. I really wish the power connection was the standard type or that the manufacturer included the power cable with the pedal. Otherwise, it really rocks.

Comments about Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal:

This is a nice DISTORTION pedal. It is SUPER durable, and has a lot of distortion and plenty of range in the tone control (or filter as they call it...same thing) to go from super dark to super bright. BUT I don't see fuzz here, and I feel it lacks in the "overdrive" department. Overdrive - hesitant check. Distortion - check. Fuzz - where is it? I view this as a nice distortion pedal. It's not as nice as a dedicated overdrive pedal, and I don't hear fuzz at all. My dedicated Big Muf Pi with wicker switch (no I didn't spell muf* wrong...apparently it's considered a potential profane term with their system lmao...even though they sell the darn thing lmao) is a much better fuzz pedal, and my Fulltone OCD is a much better overdrive pedal. But while they are nice, the certain "distortion" tone you get from this pedal is more than adequate. If you need a nice distortion pedal, you're set. I just don't see the super versatility in this one, as they claim. Still a 4/5 star pedal, and worth your coin! Just don't expect to drop the money on this one and get 3 pedals in one!

Comments about Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal:

I love this pedal. I'm very picky with my distortion and I actually have 2 side by side that I use. This is my "heavy" pedal, and the one next to it is my "light" pedal. I don't rig this thing up for metal, although depending on your kind of metal this thing could totally do it. I rig it up for some dirty blues, filter around 10-11 o 'clock, and distortion around 1 o'clock, however that's plenty distortion for me. Recently I've turned the distortion up a little bit more because I added a compressor to the mix which made me realize I relied on my highs being louder for the glass cutting, powerful distortion. I evened that out quickly though.
My number 2 pedal is currently a MXR Distortion lll pedal, although I'm currently considering a Tube Screamer.
I've seen a lot of reviews by old guys saying "the old one was awesome, blah blah blah" and that makes me happy I'm a young musician. The old one might have been better but I love the one I have and it's one of the 3 pedals I can honestly say are going to permanently going to be in my chain. I hear "oh man, back when that pedal came out it was so much better. Now it doesn't sound as awesome as it did!" all day long. However the only time I've EVER had the chance to test 2 side by side was actually with a Tube Screamer. One made about 2 years ago and the other made in the early 80's. They said the TS-808 was an amazing remake. Everyone recalling memories from the 80's said it wasn't, however they sounded exactly the same with minor differences in the aesthetic feel of the nobs and button itself, which could have been an age thing. After that experience I never trust "back in my day" speeches.
No matter what, if you played this pedal when it came out, or you didn't, it's still a great pedal to use for your distortion, or to set next to your current distortion.

Comments about Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal:

I read a lot about this pedal and watched a lot of demos before purchasing. I was convinced this was what I needed. I was somewhat disappointed but I still like the sound overall. If you pair it up with an overdrive, like a tubescreamer, you can get a nice fuzz sound out of it. But it's a little too high end and produces a little too much static and distortion for my taste. That said, I still like it and still plan on using it. I plan on getting the Alchemy Audio mod soon so that I can expand on the sound and add some low end.

You really get to enjoy the sound quality coming out of this black box. Very versatile, going from a bassy crunch to a noisy fuzz. I was getting the best from this, until the electronics failed. It seems to not have enough room inside for the 9V battery without getting some cable twisted or summat. Well, now I'm making the warranty thing work, so I'll get a new one soon, and I bet it won't break. I'd rather get an earlier USA version (not chinese) and I haven't tested A LOT of pedals, but I'm sure you wouldn't be dissapointed after buying one of these.

Comments about Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal:

I finally got one of these pedals after years of shunning distortion pedals and so far I'm pretty satisfied with it. For the longest time I've only used amp distortion for live performances in my original products but now that I'm in a covers project I'm playing around with some other options.
The features on the pedal are really good. True bypass with simple controls are always a plus. Only thing I would say against it is that they should really mention that you need a 1/8" adapter to use an external power supply with it (luckly I already have one for my TS 808).
The sound of these things is great too...nice warm and full tone. To my ear it's almost like it picks up where a tube screamer leaves off with just as much versatility in the dynamic responses. The comparative tone between the two of them is different but not so different they don't belong in the same pedal board. It cleans up well like a good TS when you role back the volume but it can also do the hard clipped chunky rock rhythm stuff or liquid, singing lead sound the more distortion you use. It's great to have in addition to my overdrive pedal(TS808 or Full Drive 2) when I need to go from Chili Peppers to Alice in Chains.
The only other cons are that 1)It might not sound good with all amps and 2)You need to turn up to get the best sound. I tried it out with my 40 watt Egnater and my 6 watt VHT combo. The Egnater sounded good enough at bedroom level but definitely prefers to be pushed. The VHT, which is an awesome sounding class A combo by itself, sounded like garbage with the Rat. This amp doesn't seem to like distortion/OD pedals in general though so I'm not sure what to make of that. In any case I'm pretty confident the pedal will work well in my live set up. For this type of pedal there doesn't seem to be anything better out there at this price range.

Comments about Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal:

This is an awesome pedal. I've played many different distortion pedals, but nothing beats its amp-like raw distortion. I use it as my main tone and deploy a TS9 to boost my solos, but at maximum gain, you wouldn't need a boost of any kind. And another thing is its versatility, it can go from a heavy overdrive, to classic rock, to jaw dropping metal. I recommend it to a play of any kind. The only problem is that you need to buy the Pro Co power supply or an adapter because the 9V power supply hole is to small for an average power supply. Other than that, blows my mind
