Overview

The high-performance Primacoustic VoxGuard ambient noise attenuator surrounds your microphone and impedes unwanted sounds from contaminating your recordings. The near field VoxGuard absorber creates an acoustic boundary around the microphone that contains vocal sounds while preventing room reflections from entering the mic.

Unlike other mic guards that employ heavy and cumbersome steel parts, the VoxGuard is lightweight and extremely easy to use. Its high-impact ABS outer shell that fits snugly to a mic stand where the microphone's clip holds the VoxGuard in place. The lightweight VoxGuard is easy to set in place without the usual fear of the stand falling over and damaging your microphone.

The VoxGuard works equally well with round-base stands, tripods and even with large studio booms. Once mounted, the VoxGuard isolation panel's innovative rear access cable port does not impede movement of the microphone to direct it at specific sound sources. That means you can also use the Primacoustic VoxGuard as an acoustic screen.

All this acoustic magic is performed with a high-density open-cell acoustic foam liner. This effectively absorbs the voice range while keeping room ambiance out to produce a dry rendering. This is particularly important when attempting to recording in rooms with less than ideal acoustics or in noisy spaces. Since the VoxGuard is 50% larger than comparable products, noise flanking is significantly reduced and performance vastly improved.

At first, I had my doubts when comparing this product with the much heavier SE refelexion filter. But boy was I surprised! I am a mobile producer and needed a portable vocal "container" that could provide clarity in those acoustically challenging situations. I used it with a client who had huge vaulted celings and the vocals came through with little to no reverb, distortion or echo. The only thing that makes me nervous about this product is the durability. It's nowhere near as sturdy as the mostly metal SErf. It's plastic and feels flemsy on the stand. So I'm not sure if it will be able to handle being toted around as much as I may need to being a mobile producer. But at 1/3rd of the cost of the SErf, the sound is great and at the end of the day, that's a huge plus. I also like it because it's bigger than the SErf and gets around the microphone better for more sound containment.

I had been recording in an ultra-dead basement home studio and my vocal sound was perfectly clean and dry. I moved to a modular home recently, and with no acoustic treatment (as there had been none in my basement), the reflections in every room and every position I tried made the recording unusable. After reading the reviews for this product, I was convinced it would not only help, but DO THE JOB. That's what the reviews all say. I talked to two people at Guitar Center who assured me that this would take care of the reflections and give me a dry sound, with no additional acoustic treatment and it wouldn't even matter where I put my mic. WHAT A CROCK. Yes, this product DID "help," but the recordings are still unusable. It might have even gotten rid of 80% of the room reflections, but so what? It's still not dry, still not usable. I will be taking this product back. I give it an extra star because PERHAPS if your room or environment is only a little bad, this could do the trick. But do not for one second believe that this thing alone is guaranteed to take care of your problems with room reflections.

Pretty Good

By Matt Martinez

from NM

This thing work pretty good at isolating your mic from room. It makes a subtle yet noticeable difference in the recording quality. Pros: Cuts down on room ambiance some what. Looks cool. Multiple mounting options. Good for voice-over recordings in less than perfect environments. Fairly portable. Cons: A little Pricey. heavy and will weigh down cheaper mic booms without a counter weight. If your buying this for voice over production be advised that it is some what difficult to read copy while using this iso panel,it can be be done but you either have stand further away from the panel (which introduces more room into the recording) or position it higher above the head. Not great for desktop mic stands. Get this if your recording voice overs in a untreated room or noisy room.

Don't believe the hype

You Get What You Pay For....

By AO

from Los Angeles, CA

I purchased this item and was excited to setup. Right out the box I noticed the item was nothing more than some plastic and foam stuck to it. There is a whole at the bottom which allows the Voxguard to sit on your mic stand of choice. There is no counter balance or attempt to level the mic stand. Then you have to attempt to also place the mic holder/adapter (and/or mic clip/shockmount). This was kind of hard with no help. After all is said and done there is only one place you can put the mic and no adjustable movement (no front, back, side to side). I felt the sound i was getting out of this was a useful as my friend holding up two pieces of auralex around my mic.

Yes, it's worth it. Absolutely.

By Steve

from Benton, AR

I was shocked at how well this worked. It clobbers sound bouncing off the wall in front of you and coming back to smack the mic from behind. If you need to hear the difference for yourself, just walk into any Guitar Center with it setup and step back 10 feet from it. Start talking (semi)loudly and walk towards it....and even before you reach the sweet-spot for vocals, you will instantly hear the reflected sound crushed. One of these puppies with a few wall treatments will get just about any room ready for some tight vocal recording.

Well worth the money (Does its job to the T)

By Tommy

from Warren, Michigan

When recording in any environment you want your vocals to be very "dead" meaning the recorded track should be free of natural reverbs or room noise and ambiance of any sort. In many cases even with acoustic room treatments you get a lot of out of out of control noise. This product reduces this problem by an enormous amount. For anybody who has a studio with or without an acoustically treated booth should own one of these. I've own it and had it behind all my vocal tracks and I will say its made more that a small $$ difference in my recording company. My vocal tracks are recorded in a way now that I'm able to control the ambiance, reverb, and decay of an artists vocals. This is an awesome product and well worth the money!

Over-hyped garbage.

By Bobby

from Memphis, TN

I recently started mixing for a studio that got convinced by some savvy salesman to buy this thing. Every track it is used on has some serious low-end mud (200Hz-500Hz) that I have to eq out. Sure it prevents reflections of high frequencies from the walls around it but the plastic shield behind the foam reflects and boosts everything under around 1k. It's absurd, apparently the engineers of this thing never heard of the proximity effect either.... ahh well. Anyway I made them throw it in the garbage and now their tracks are clean and I don't have to apply so much eq to everything.

Great Product for a Great Price!

By Dennis

from Pleasant Grove, UT

I bought this yesterday 9/16/10 at the store and couldn't wait to see if the reviews I read were right. Easy set up on the mic stand, but putting the mic w/shock absorber on was a not as easy. As far as the stability compared to the SE Reflexion, it wobbles when you move the stand. I have it set on a Boom mic with a down extension. Not only does the display of it look very pleasing, but the quality of the sound of vocals is wonderful I tried it in several rooms throughout my house and it works great, especially in my reverb room of death. for the price I paid, it was worth it! 3 notes: 1) I know that through time if I constantly move it around, it will eventually break, so I believe it should be a bit more sturdy. 2) Unlike the SE, you cannot move your mic closer or further away. It is set in one place and that is it. 3) If you like your mic upside down, you WILL have to buy a mic stand w/down extension. It doesn't tell you that on the box. Only on the instructions of setting it up.

Not for every mic

By Nas

from St. Paul, MN

I bought the VoxGaurd at the Roseville, MN location. I brought it home, installed it on my boom-stand, and then realized it wouldn't work with my microphone-the Shure SM7B. I used it with a lower grade condenser mic I had and it out-performed my expectations.

Primacoustic Vox Guard

By Tom Perlongo

from Milwaukee, Wisconsin

After searcing various recording supply manufactures for the perfect vocal barrier, Primacoustic should be setting the standard! Their Voxguard Microphone insolation panel, works just as well as a booth! & the best thing about it is that it`s portable! What more could you ask for?

VoxGuard Works

By Tony

from Phoenix, AZ

the product came after back order was fulfilled. Comes in a box, fairly large piece to install upon mic stand. But it looks nice, and gets the job done. Only drawback I can tell is that it's a little bit wobbly, because of its size and I think it needs a better clamping system. Other than that it's great equipment for the price. One other plus: it picked up the nuance of my mic as I had it on chorus setting. The Filter picked up on that signal and processed it beautifully!
