Overview

The masters at PreSonus have been designing preamps for a long time, and they always focus on audio quality first and foremost. Now they've upgraded on their most popular single-channel preamp, the TubePre v2 is focused on improving an already high-quality sound. Like the original TubePre, the new version is a fully professional tube preamp, with a dual-servo (no capacitors) gain stage that lets you boost the program signal to smoking hot levels without significantly increasing the background noise. Discrete components and high-voltage operation offer dynamic range and detail not found in other single-channel tube preamps in its class.

The TubePre v2 provides an even wider palette of sound options, and a much more focused tube saturation than the original TubePre. It has been upgraded to employ PreSonus' popular XMAX Class A solid-state preamp, which is followed in the signal path by a 12AX7 vacuum-tube stage. Twist the TubePre v2 Drive saturation control to add the "color" that only a hand-selected 12AX7 vacuum tube can deliver - from gentle warmth to total fuzz.

Housed in a rugged case, the TubePre v2 rear panel sports separate unbalanced 1/4" instrument and balanced XLR mic inputs and unbalanced 1/4" and balanced XLR line outputs. Plenty of professional extras including a high-pass filter, phantom power for condenser mics, polarity reverse switch and a backlit VU meter.

The TubePre v2 is more than a mic preamp, though. Thanks to its separate instrument and mic inputs, it also serves as a dynamite direct box (DI) for guitars and basses. And it's small enough to carry almost anywhere, although you also can screw-mount it to a standard rack tray.

One of my friends wanted something that would suffice for his home studio vocal recordings, so i recommended this unit to him. This is in no way a high end pre, but for the price it outdoes itself! I had never used the TubePre before I recommended it to my friend, but after using the Presonus Bluetube a few times I concluded that the sound and quality would be very similar. I set everything up for him and found that the TubePre actually sounds better in my opinion. The reason may be that both of the channels in the Bluetube run through the same tube. The TubePre is one channel running through one tube. For the price and for what my friend is looking to do, which is mostly songs to put out on YouTube (which destroys audio quality anyways) this product is great. It sounds clear yet warm and doesn't sound muddy. It also has alot of headroom for a cheaper mic pre. Box is sturdy and well made. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking to use this for demo-quality recordings.

Having owned several pieces of Presonus gear in the past with great results, the TubePre V2 seemed like a no-brainer to me when I wanted an affordable "color" pre. I was severely disappointed. Let me be clear -- I wasn't expecting boutique quality, nor was I expecting a totally noise-free unit. I record a lot of "lo-fi" and vintage-sounding stuff, so my standards are not really all that high. I just couldn't get any good results with the TubePre. I tried it direct in with several of my electric guitars, I tried it on vocals (with a Rode NT1a and an SM7B), I tried it on guitar cabs -- I just couldn't get a good sound. The drive knob appeared to do absolutely nothing. I noticed NO difference at all until I had it cranked all the way up with the gain, and by then I was clipping on the way in; not very pleasant! The unit was also way too noisy for my liking, to the point where any recording would be unusable. Maybe I received a faulty product, maybe I should've changed out the tube, but at $129 I just returned it. I ended up purchasing ART's Pro Channel on clearance for $80 and I'm so much happier. If you want usable saturation and color ALONG with a decent compressor and EQ, see if you can find a cheap Pro Channel.

Comments about Presonus TubePre V2 Single-Channel Tube Preamplifier/DI Box:

The unit is great except for one problem... THERE IS NO ON/OFF SWITCH! It has to be unplugged (from the back) when you want to shut down for the day. Makes no sense. I sent an email to Presonus inquiring, they never responded.

    Great choice.

    By John Miller

Comments about Presonus TubePre V2 Single-Channel Tube Preamplifier/DI Box:

So I wanted a tube pre amp to act as a DI box for a cheep keyboard as well as a ribbon mike I have. I went and bought a cheep unit and it worked nice. Long story short, it died in a few days. I returned it and wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money on the PreSous. After talking with the sales guy at GC I thought, what the hell, I'll spend the extra cash (even though these are ver inexpensive). WOW what a great unit. Not only did this sound better than the other one, I was also surprised at the complete lack of noise, even when cranked up. After some test recordings, I can honestly say, this unit rocks! Can't wait to us it on my next project.

Comments about Presonus TubePre V2 Single-Channel Tube Preamplifier/DI Box:

Either the manual is wrong or the unit is defective. guitar wont distort unless the Gain is 100%. when Gain is at 100% VU meter is pegged. the unit is supposed to distort by use of the Drive then your supposed to adjust the gain to fit your needs. It dont work that way. You can forget about support from presonus. the have been jerking me around for 3 weeks now. I should have check out their reputation for support first....

This Pre-Amp is what I would describe as Hard sounding. Its great for guitars, vocals and other recordings. I don't recommend it for Bass guitar, for it peaks a lot. If you want a Soft sounding pre-amp I recommend the Art Tube. This is a great single channel Tube Pre-Amp. Can't go wrong with Presonus Tubes!

      PreSonus TubePre V2

      By James Nicklas

      from West St. Paul, Minnesota

Comments about Presonus TubePre V2 Single-Channel Tube Preamplifier/DI Box:

First off this preamp is awesome! I hooked it up to my Audio Technica AT2035 condenser microphone and then hooked it up to my Tascam audio interface. There was absolutely no noise to be heard except my voice and the input level was perfect with no clipping. All I needed to do was add a little compression and presto that's all I needed. I then connected my bass guitar to it and recorded some bass playing. The input level was again perfect with no clipping and after some level adjustments and compression, the final recording sounded awesome! If you're looking for a preamp to use with either microphones and/or instruments, this is the one. Just make sure when you pick this up to also get some balanced Mogami cables and you're set.

      Amazing

      By David Mazanec

      from Alexandria, VA

Comments about Presonus TubePre V2 Single-Channel Tube Preamplifier/DI Box:

I was going to get the $99 version but I recently upgraded from the Presonus Audiobox USB to the Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 and decided to get the upgraded version of the TubePre in the process. It was a few dollars more and I am so glad I did. I use Logic Pro, which is amazing just on it's own, but the TubePred V2 adds just enough tone to make the amp and pedal board really sound amazing. And it's really easy to use. I haven't used it with a microphone yet so I can't comment on that. My main reason for buying it was to improve the sound of my guitar.
