Overview

The FireStudio from PreSonus is a 26-in/26 out FireWire recording interface loaded with 8 of PreSonus' acclaimed mic preamps. It has MIDI, S/PDIF, word clock, and ADAT (dual SMUX) I/O plus a 36x18 DSP matrix routing mixer. Firestudio also gives you up to 26 simultaneous inputs and outputs. Combined with the speaker volume and mix control of the optional Monitor Station Remote (MSR), it gives your studio advanced digital capabilities.

You can easily think of the FireStudio as the big brother to the award-winning FirePod with more I/O, and adding the MSR (Monitor Station Remote) really upgrades your setup. The MSR is a complete surround-capable desktop remote control that gives you the ability to switch between Track, Mix, and Surround modes, as well as a talkback, dim, mute, mono, and dual headphone amplifiers. Track Mode delivers nine stereo mixes for monitoring in headphones during tracking, Mix Mode allows the user to switch between three sets of stereo monitors, and Surround Mode enables 5.1 surround control for mixing in surround sound. See the Recommended Accessories box below to add the MSR to your FireStudio order.

What a step up from the Firepod (which I also owned). My only complaint is that Cubase LE only lets you record 8 tracks at a time. So I switched to Cubase4. But all in all, this is the best interface I've heard.

Ok if you want to record at lower khz... Impossible to record or even playback music at 96khz as there is constant clicking and stuttering. This can only be removed by rolling back to very early software/firmware. Technical support is lacking. They take forever to answer, and give canned replied, ignoring the bulk of your complaint.

        Don't Buy This Interface!!!

        By Ken

        from New York, NY

You better hope you don't have a problem! Presonus releases driver/software updates that are full of compatability problems and then provides the worst customer support I have ever experienced. When it works, it works well but if you have a problem, you're on your own. I replaced my Firestudio which now sits on a closet shelf.

        Amazing sound

        By Paul of Alation

        from Minneapolis, MN

I'd give this thing 5 stars if it was easier to install and use. Before buying this make sure you check on their page of compatible hardware. Mainly for PC I found that the firewire card you have is the most important. The texas intsrument SIIG worked as they said it would. Prior to buying that card i had another one and the firestudio would talk to my PC but you could not get the sound to come out or record sound. Also if you have windows XP service pack 3, get rid of it and go back to service pack 2. You can not install certain program drivers with this service pack installed. Once you get everything right and working you'll love this little box. I've also bought the digimax FS with this and it worked wonders while using it on my PC. I didnt get any sound drops or pops or anything unnatural like you might read in other reviews elsewhere. I have a pentium dual core 2.0 with 3 gig ram and there was no issues of using the Cubase LE 4 and recording 12 channels straight to the PC.

        More bang for the buck!

        By Bret Norman

        from Chisago City, MN

I got this box in may of this year and have been using it alot. I have a MacBook and Logic Pro. Just made the upgrade to LP8 and Love it! Mic pre's are great! Lots of people are saying there better than anything out there. There is latency with all firewire interfaces, just because they say its zero latency does not mean that it is true in all scenerios. I have found that the delay is better at 88.2k than 44.1, in fact it is about as good as it could be I imagine. Make sure you are recording all your projects in 88.2 to avoid the slap back on your record monitor. I imagine that the firewire interfaces with 176.4 would have even less delay, however I would probobly have to have a faster computer than my tiny MacBook. So for a firewire interface this one has all the features that make the price worth it! Thumbs up for FireStudio!

        Very Poor Overall

        By lawaters

        from TX

I am *totally unimpressed* with PreSonus and its products. The software is lazy at best. One of the units I bought was faulty out of the box. Their tech support is an absolute joke (their best answer is "reinstall the software"); they have no technical skills and sound like college students to me. Performance is no better than the Line6 equipment I was upgrading from, and the software is nowhere near as good. I made a big mistake buying this product, thinking I'd save a few bucks. I'd spend a little more and get MOTU or some other professional-level gear. Or go the budget route and buy Line6. Don't waste your money here.

        Not to be rude but,

        By Codytron

        from Nashville, TN

I'm not trying to sound rude but, this product has given me more head-aches and back-aches than it's worth. Before buying PLEASE MAKE SURE you are not running WINDOWS VISTA! they say the problem is fixed with the updated drivers, but It's not. I think they need to fix the problems with their drivers before they launch anymore Presonus products. I wish I knew how this thing worked, because I was looking forward to using it for a while now. I run Sonar 7pe and have been recording for around 10 years now...

        Great Product

By The Man, The Legend, The Artist

        from dallas, ga

I bought the Firestudio after a lot of research and I have not been disappointed. The only thing that can cause headaches is trying to get it to play well with your chipset. If I had to suggest a change in the product I would like to be able to turn on phantom power for less than four channels at a time. As far as sound goes, it is pristine. I love how easy it is to get good sound out of this interface. It's a great place to start for anyone who wants to get into semi-pro recording.

        Great sounding interface

        By Trigger

        from Tyler, TX

I was having a prob with drivers for awhile. But customer service helped me with that. Now that I figured out the driver prob. everything works great. Sounds great, has great headroom on the pre's. Whenever I email customer service I get a response within 6hrs. As long as its not the weekend. So I have not had an issue like the other reviewers had. I would buy this again.

Don't waste your time or money on this product

        By enzo

The PreSonus Fire Studio is the biggest piece of junk I've ever purchased. It cuts in an out randomly from working to no sound at all, or fuzzes out in the middle of recording. It is simply unreliable, unpredictable, and a massive headache to have to put up with. And I'm not the only one that has experienced this. There are many examples all over various forums. I wish I had researched this product more thoroughly before I wasted $500 on it. Based on my experience with this product, I will never purchase another PreSonus product.

compatibility issues, I blame my computer

        By Rusty Bouvier

        from Thibodaux, LA

This is my second fp10. We were hoping to connect it to the other one and have 16 channels. The driver wouldn't allow us to use it. We are still trying to figure out the next step. The whole band was on standby for two days and we were not able to record as we wanted. I still like the fp10, but it was frustrating that 5 busy musicians cleared their calender for a recording weekend, and we were unable to make it happen. The 8 channels sounded good though, just not as separated as the 16.

Best Bang For The Buck! PERIOD!!!

        By ~jR

        from CREEPLAIR, INDIANA

OK.. so I don't have the new FIRESTUDIO.. But I have the older version aka~ FIREPOD. I have used it faithfully for the last 4 years., I recorded our first CD with it CREEP-"Struggle Within" and never had a problem until I bought a laptop that didn't come with firewire which I bought a DYNEX expansion card from Best Buy and guess what? Still works great. It has 8 channels which for a 5 piece band can be a challenge., however you can chain multiple devices together if need be. Say for a life recording if you want to single out every tom and cymbal. Personally.. I just used 7 channels for drums, [two overhead condensers, and the others 5 for kicks and toms and one for guitar scratch track., recorded one take with click track,. and then let drummer play to that recording with all 8 channels. I love these products and would recommend to anyone wanting an affordable interface with excellent digital audio converters. It is really as easy as plug it in and start recording so what are you waiting for? I looked long and hard at interfaces for years and it wasn't until Presonus made these awesome products available at a price I could afford did I get my home studio up to standard. Don't let a bad review from someone who doesn't know how to plug it in stop you.

This thing is a beast and user friendly. To gain the best momentum, get a fast PC, you won't hear no lag. This gives me super clean audio recording. Use good cables, and you will fall in love. Been using this since it first came out and I'm still using it today for recording and producing. Produce and record over 100 artists with this. No problem and no complain.
