Overview

The PreSonus AudioBox USB 2x2 USB recording system is an excellent solution for achieving high-quality, professional-sounding recordings no matter where you are. The AudioBox USB is a USB bus-powered audio recording interface loaded with 2 microphone/instrument inputs with 48V phantom power, two balanced TRS outputs, and MIDI I/O so you can stay portable without sacrificing your sound. The AudioBox USB also comes with Studio One Artist music creation and production software which has the same platform and intuitive interface as Studio One Pro but with an unlimited track count so you can start recording right out of the box.

PreSonus Audio has won numerous awards for designing quality microphone preamplifiers for all price levels. The AudioBox USB is loaded with preamps that deliver high headroom, low noise, and high gain to give you pure, full, and rich sound. Most USB recording devices operate at a 16-bit sample rate and use converters with dynamic ranges of less than 90dB which gives you a pinched and relatively small sound. The AudioBox USB, however, uses professional-grade analog to digital converters with a dynamic range of 102dB and 24-bit sample rate so that the digital conversion is big, quiet, and musical, making it one of the best sounding USB bus-powered interface on the market.

The AudioBox USB is bus-powered giving you the flexibility you need with no wall warts, line lumps, or power cables. Just plug in to a powered USB port and you are ready to record. The AudioBox USB is housed in an all-metal chassis with metal knobs able to withstand the rigors of travel and your touring adventures. Just toss the AudioBox USB in your laptop bag and mobilize your music creation and production. Whether you're recording your shows, creating a mix on the plane, or writing songs in your hotel room, the AudioBox is ready to go.

First of all, I am a complete rookie when it comes to audio equipment. But after having purchased a Behringer Mixer and having nothing but trouble in my voice recordings I knew I had to find something else. I returned the Mixer and decided to look for something that was available at my local guitar center. So I found this little device which seemed promising. I placed my order online and within an hour of the store opening I had it in my possession. I plug in the device into my HP laptop running Windows 10, run the driver installer and a minute later its installed. Next I opened up my Mixcraft 7 audio recording program and I start recording. Right away I noticed a huge different just on by wearing the headphones. So i play back my first recording and I was amazed at how clear it sounded with very little amount of hiss. This program is perfect for podcasters, you dont need a large mixer for simple vocal recording unless you need a ton of microphones. But even yet with this guy you can plug in two microphones and interview a guest.

I purchased this item for my mini studio at home for use with guitars and vocals. I didn't have any issues with setup or getting the device recognized in my DAW. Huge issue with this item though. I had my bass/guitars plugged in and even with the input volume completely turned down, the audio pumped through the input as if i had it turned up to half way. I am no stranger to home recording and I had everything set up as required. Just very hot inputs on this thing I guess. I checked some forums online and found that others had the same problem. So I hooked up an Alesis iO2 express instead. Works like a charm. Sorry Presonus, but I am not happy with this device at all.

Comments about PreSonus Black Audiobox 2x2 USB Recording System:

I've had problems with this box since I got it. I've been able to record with it and I've very happy with the Studio One 3 software it came with, which I'll upgrade to Pro. The issues I've been having is a pop or crackle in my recordings with the 48 kHz 24 bit setting. I have to record at 44.1 kHz.

As an audio interface, hooked up to my Mac, even when I send emails and the Mail app sends out an email, the audio interface crackles during the airplane sound my Mail makes, or just even dialing anything up like YouTube. Last but not least, the inputs are really hot. I pretty much have to turn them all the way down. I've done plenty of recordings on this box, with great results, but I shouldn't have to fool with it as much as I have to. It should just work.

Comments about PreSonus Black Audiobox 2x2 USB Recording System:

I make music using garageband. This is by far THE BEST PIECE OF MUSIC RECORDING EQUIPMENT I HAVE EVER USED. It revolutionized the way i make music. I love seamlessly recording via mic, and i can even plug my guitar in. It was easy to learn how to use this thing to do what I need, and I have never looked back. I usually don't write reviews, but I will personally go out of my way to tell you - get this audiobox recording system.

Comments about PreSonus Black Audiobox 2x2 USB Recording System:

This worked wonderfully, no complaints, until it broke down and, sadly, there were lots of complaints,no action. Was recommended to me by GC and I was delighted for six months until the USB output on the unit (which had never been moved) collapsed inside the box itself and was DOA. My error was not getting GCProtection. Instead, I had to make calls to the manufacturer who basically said, "Tough break and that was that. IIt seems that with the Protection (which I didn't consider and wasn't offered) you just sidle up to the counter and get an exchange, easy peasy. Otherwise, you have a series of rather good recordings on your computer and a lovely black paperweight for your desktop.

This product was great while it worked. You have to go online to download the drivers for the unit to work(don't even bother with the cd in the box). My unit after about a year broke, and the customer support from presonus told me that I was out of luck. Luckily, I had purchased pro coverage with Guitar Center so I could get a new one. I love the unit, but it is a pain to get running for a PC, and an even bigger pain if something goes wrong. If I have issues with this one I will probably buy another brand. You have been warned!

Comments about PreSonus Black Audiobox 2x2 USB Recording System:

I purchased this primarily to build my own backing tracks for my night club floor show. I am also an IT consultant with my own computer support company, so I am no stranger to either music or computers. I also have a client that wants to convert a library of taped piano performances to digital format, so I thought this would be the perfect investment to get myself into the world of digital recording for both sides of my business.

The quick guide that comes with the Audiobox USB references a driver CD, but apparently is not actually packaged with it these days. This is not a plug-and-play device, so setup was not as easy as it could have been as the Windows drivers did not install. I located the driver software on the Presonus web site, and imagined that some of my musician friends who are not as computer-savvy as I am would have problems getting this thing to work! The Presonus Studio One 3 software, which downloads free upon product registration, is also a bit of a bear to work with. I read other reviews about software crashes and have experienced them as well, almost to the point of considering a return of the Audiobox because the combination was unusable!

HOWEVER, once I downloaded the free version of Audacity, I was able to work with the Audiobox and actually laid down a demo track and started converting my client's tapes, cleaning up and enhancing the sound while I was at it! Bottom line, Audiobox USB is OK . . . Studio One 3 is not at the top of my list!

About the only physical complaint I have is the closeness of the knobs combined with my stubby-chubby fingers makes adjustment on the fly impossible. The control identification is hard to read as well. My recommendation to a friend would be with reservations!

I opened an additional studio room and wanted something to be compatible with a Windows XP 32-bit Pentium IV computer. It is being used with and older version of Cubase. After registering the device and downloading the drivers, this thing was ready to go. Its simple to operate and sounds great for pre-production. It completes the simple setup I was looking for which is a mic, a computer, headphones, speakers, and the Audio Box.
