The AudioBox 22VSL introduces a new generation of PreSonus USB 2.0 audio/MIDI interfaces that take hardware/software integration to the logical next step. Using your computer CPU and PreSonus Virtual StudioLive (VSL) software, AudioBox VSL-series interfaces provide reverb and and delay effects and the same Fat Channel compression, limiting, semi-parametric EQ, and high-pass filter, as the PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 digital mixer- all with inaudible latency. Now you can monitor and record with or without real-time dynamics processing and EQ!

What's so great about effects and processing on monitors?
Tracking without hearing effects and signal processing is like playing a video game with your eyes closed. Musicians rely on aural cues when performing, and their performance can vary depending on what they hear in their monitors. Adding just the right amount of compression, EQ, and reverb can make a huge difference in their ability to hear themselves clearly and to experience their performance as if it occurred in a natural space rather than in the artificial sonic environment of the studio. The result is a better performance and ultimately a better recording.

You have plenty of effects plug-ins for your DAW, but processing audio with a DAW takes more time than you might think. True, we're talking milliseconds, but it's long enough that if you put DAW effects in your studio monitors, you'll hear the original sound slightly before the processed signal, which is very disorienting. That much delay might be acceptable for live gigs, where the band is playing together in an ambient space that has natural delay. But you can't record that way in the studio.

Fortunately, PreSonus' engineering wizards have dramatically reduced processing delay in the AudioBox VSL series. The result: dynamics processing, EQ, reverb, and effects that feel real, with no audible delay.

And if you like what you hear, you can record with AudioBox VSL-series effects, too! These are the same high-quality StudioLive 16.0.2 Fat Channel dynamics processors and EQs that professional musicians, engineers, and producers record with every day.

Great processors are a PreSonus tradition

PreSonus didn't invent the first audio interface with effects. They simply did it better and for less money. Sure, some interface manufacturers who don't normally make signal processors have added a compressor, EQ and a few effects to their interfaces. But the AudioBox VSL series provides all that, plus a separate limiter, expander, and high-pass filter-and we've been making high-quality signal processors since 1995. The AudioBox VSL-series' Virtual StudioLive (VSL)-based effects and Fat Channel processing have been extensively field-tested and proven popular by tens of thousands of StudioLive-series mixer users, including many top professionals.

Of great importance, thanks to VSL's drag-and-drop convenience, adding processing and creating and loading presets is easy. Pro-level processing and superior ease of use mean you'll get better results and have more fun!

High-end sound in a portable, roadworthy interface
Bus-powered, compact, and rugged, the AudioBox 22VSL offers two convenient front-panel mic/instrument combo inputs with global phantom power and provides two line-level outputs. It sports the same high-headroom Class A XMAX preamps as the StudioLive mixers and has 24-bit/96kHz converters with 114dB dynamic range for clear, clean audio. And it boasts PreSonus' legendary 150 mW headphone output, which is loud enough to explode the oysters in a Po'-Boy sandwich. (Be careful with your level control!)

When we tell you PreSonus made the AudioBox 22VSL "rugged," we're not fooling! It employs the same heavy-duty steel case as the original AudioBox USB-the unit Presonus famously stomped, kicked, and drove over with a full-size truck before using it to make a very nice recording. (You can witness this in the video AudioBox USB Built for the Road.) Now that's what we call "roadworthy." And this mighty mite fits in just a third of a rackspace and can be screw-mounted to a standard rack tray (not included).

The flexibility and power of software

VSL enables you to easily manage the processing and mixing from your Mac or Windows PC and provides editor/librarian functions, making it simple to create and use a library of presets. To get you started, PreSonus included the same library of more than 50 Fat Channel presets that comes with StudioLive mixers. These presets were created by professional musicians and engineers and let you instantly set up dynamics processing and EQ for vocals, guitar, and much more.

Seamlessly integrated with the included Studio One Artist DAW and VSL, the AudioBox 22VSL interface works with virtually all Mac and Windows audio-recording software. And unlike most things nowadays, it's very easy on your budget.

Studio Magic Plug-in Suite Included

Non functional within 5 months

By doug shook

from Oxford,NC

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

This unit worked fine for the first 5 months that I have had it. The headphones went out on it. I emailed Presonus 3 times and they decided I should send it back to them at my cost of $85.00 for repair. For the purchase price and repair cost, this unit will end up costing me a total of $266.00. Certainly not worth that much. And lets not forget the time lost while I am waiting for Presonus to reply and to repair it and get it back to me. Proceed with extreme caution.

Great Support for Mac OSX Mountain Lion & USB 3.0...

By Nathaniel Thompson

from Leesburg, Virginia

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

I'm quickly learning that Presonus is a company that stands behind their products and supports their products with quickly timed updates to drivers and firmware. I bought the latest and greatest Macbook Pro with Retina display which has USB 3.0 ports (which I assumed would work out of the box with Audio Interfaces that use USB 2.0 since Mac's USB 3.0 ports are backwards compatible, but I learned by scouring many online forums that this is not always the case), and my Mac has the latest OS - Mountain Lion. In less than a week after Mountain Lion was released, Presonus had working drivers for Mountain Lion with Mac USB 3.0 drivers. At the time of this review the drivers for Mac USB 3.0 and Mountain Lion are in Beta, but so far they work perfectly while recording at 96khz and I hear no pops, clicks, or latency on my tracks or while monitoring them. This box will mainly sit stationary in my home recording studio since I have my Mackie feeding into it and do all the mixing with the Mackie, but it is built tough with quality parts and minimal use of plastic. The control knobs feel like they are built to sustain many years of rugged use and do not feel cheap. Overall this is a quality piece of equipment that you can't go wrong with and Presonus is a pretty good company as far as driver support goes and good community support in their online forums. I would highly recommend buying this if you do not need more than 2 inputs (or one stereo input - one instrument/line Left, one instrument/line Right) for your recording.

Great Little Box for my rack!

By Ted Morris

from Valparaiso, Indiana

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

I just got the Presonus 22VSL a few months ago and already I can see why people love it! I have been a long time presonus junkie, buying a firestudio project and studio one artist, upgrading eventually to studio one 2 pro about six months ago. Virtual Studio Live is a dream, and the ability to print the built in effects to my DAW is fantastic, loving zero latency as well. I just wish VSL Remote for iPad would work with it, but I'm sure in time, it will. Highly recommend for someone getting into the field of Recording and Production!

WOW PreSonus is AWESOME!!!

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

PreSonus, WOW, I had never even heard of your company. I bought my 22VSL after doing a lot of research. Honestly I bought my unit after reading review after review of what an amazing product it was. I got the unit, easy setup, sound quality was amazing, the only down side came from a mistake with GuitarCenter. The unit had been returned to them and someone used the product key for the Studio One software. Why anyone would return this unit is a mystery to me, their lost! However, they used the Product Key which meant that it wouldn?t work for me. I tried to talk with GuitarCenter and they were unable to help me, without returning the unit and waiting for another one. PreSonus, fixed their mistake for them, thank you. The wait time to talk with tech support was a long one but worth it! Friendly, knowledgeable, and knew exactly how to fix my issue. I love PreSonus! If this is how you conduct business and this is the quality you put into your products I am sure you are going to be a go to source for my future music needs. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Sincerely Cheiron lead vocalist of DemaGagh!

Great little interface

By Cory Casanave

from Vienna, VA

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

I originally purchased a PreSonus Audiobox USB but uncovered some issues: The gain on the inputs was not great, it is USB1 and I really needed to be able to do some EQ without post-production. The nice guys at Guitar center did the upgrade without question. I like the Audiobox 22VSL much better and it addresses all of these issues. The sound quality is very nice and it is able to do EQ and compression in software, live. It is well worth the small price difference for the video tutorials and webinars I am doing (think voice-over). Downsides ? no line-in, it could really use one more set of I/O (the next level up has more I/O but at a big price jump). It would also be better if the EQ had more than 3 channels to adjust and could mix other computer inputs (including the built-in sound card). The build quality is very good and I have been able to get questions answered from tech support at PreSonus. All in all I am pleased and would recommend this interface. Now all I have to do is find the right microphone!

Great little audio box

from St. Louis, MO

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

Presonus products never really cease to amaze I'm a bit biased... :) This little box is really great. My intended use was basic home demo recording. Anything from posting new vids to my YouTube page to recording complex multi-track recordings. One of the coolest features that I didn't know about when I bought the box was that it was completely powered via USB; really cool for making things a bit more portable when I want them to be (not that one more power cable is THAT big of a deal...) I really tried hard to come up with a complaint about this no avail. If you're looking for a great and reasonably inexpensive two channel USB 2.0 Audio Box, I don't think you're going to find one much better than this.

Very nice box

By michael haynes

from Theodore, Al

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

I just picked this up a couple of days ago and have to say that I love it. Actually, it has given me a whole new level of love for my amp (H&K Tubemeister 18). I run from the redbox out on the amp to the 22VSL and get a wonderful tone from it. It's easy to use, feels solid, was easy to install and setup, and at a decent price point. The software that comes with it is pretty nice but I use a different DAW so I haven't really fooled with it much. The actual VSL software didn't do much for me, YMMV. Maybe more time fooling with it with change my mind about the software items. Overall I've very happy with the product. The sound is what matters and this delivers. I can't really compare it to other products in this range as I haven't tried them but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to someone.

Worth more than you pay

By Noah Hoffland

from Edgewood MD

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

I've owned 2 different interfaces in the past and this is easily my favorite. Its really sleek and stylish. Looks very professional. Expect minor hiccups during the installation process. It was a little bit of a hassle to get working properly. But I can't complain. It performs on another level entirely compared to my previous interfaces. I will say that the recording software it comes with (studio one) is hands down the most convoluted recording software I have ever used. The video tutorials available on the website are pretty short and not very in depth. But again, after a good bit of guess work and hours of practice, it is capable of things I've only seen in software that costs an arm and a leg. Overall it's a great buy! I would suggest it to any of my friends. I would also suggest that they be prepared for a good bit of frustration during the installation process. After all the kinks are worked out, it's smooth sailing.

Comments about Presonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

Had this thing of almost 5 years now. Bought it when I didn't know anything about recording (I still don't).
At first I had issues with lag time, but thats because I was using an old PC. WELL since I got my macbook pro I haven't had an issue with time syncing, recording, or any of it.
Great starter interface, easy to use, and affordable. Not going to get the studio quality sound that the big studios turn out, but it does great for demos, covers, ideas, riffs, skiffs, slides, loving, and serenading!
