The PreSonus AudioBox USB 2x2 USB recording system is an excellent solution for achieving high-quality, professional-sounding recordings no matter where you are. The AudioBox USB is a USB bus-powered audio recording interface loaded with 2 microphone/instrument inputs with 48V phantom power, 2 balanced TRS outputs, and MIDI I/O so you can stay portable without sacrificing your sound. The AudioBox USB also comes with Studio One Artist music creation and production software which has the same platform and intuitive interface as Studio One Pro but with an unlimited track count so you can start recording right out of the box.

PreSonus Audio has won numerous awards for designing quality microphone preamplifiers for all price levels. The AudioBox USB is loaded with preamps that deliver high headroom, low noise, and high gain to give you pure, full, and rich sound. Most USB recording devices operate at a 16-bit sample rate and use converters with dynamic ranges of less than 90dB which gives you a pinched and relatively small sound. The AudioBox USB, however, uses professional-grade analog to digital converters with a dynamic range of 102dB and 24-bit sample rate so that the digital conversion is big, quiet, and musical, making it one of the best sounding USB bus-powered interface on the market.

The AudioBox USB is bus-powered giving you the flexibility you need with no wall warts, line lumps, or power cables. Just plug in to a powered USB port and you are ready to record. The AudioBox USB is housed in an all-metal chassis with metal knobs able to withstand the rigors of travel and your touring adventures. Just toss the AudioBox USB in your laptop bag and mobilize your music creation and production. Whether you're recording your shows, creating a mix on the plane, or writing songs in your hotel room, the AudioBox is ready to go.

I just got a new macbook (yes the kind that does not have a firewire port). Although I love my computer, my Presonus Inspire 1394 was now obsolete. I received my Audiobox a few days ago and I really could not be more satisfied with the results. Most people say you should buy a firewire interface because USB is slower and the mic preamps are not up to par. I actually think the Audiobox sounds better than the Inspire! It was quick and easy to set up, works great with garageband, and there is very little 'hum' on the recordings (a problem I struggled with on my Inspire). The Audiobox makes recording fast and easy so you can focus on what you are playing instead of complications with the interface.

I purchased a Yamaha keyboard. I connected the keyboard output to the two inputs of the Audiobox USB using a TRS to split TS cable. I set the output of the keyboard about half volume and then adjusted the gain of the Audiobox USB to keep the clip lights off. I then connected speakers to the output of the Audiobox USB and headphones to the headphone connector of the Audiobox USB. The Audiobox USB and the keyboard are also connected to a laptop for recording and playback.

This worked well for a couple of months. I am able to hear Youtube and the keyboard simultaneously, and select whether to listen through the headphones or speakers or both. I can my DAW to/from the keyboard through MIDI over USB. It is a nice, clean solution to audio / MIDI routing.

Now I am hearing cracks and pops through the headphones from the Audiobox USB. I substituted headphones to no avail. I varied the buffer size but could not eliminate the pops. I searched the Presonus knowledgebase and found an excellent article for removing and re-installing the driver (as one way to eliminate the pops). I performed the procedure but the pops are still there.

I continued to search the knowledgebase and found another article that states that the inputs to the Audiobox USB should NEVER be used as line inputs. Damage could result. Nowhere on the Audiobox USB is this stated and I do not believe it is stated in any documentation that came with the Audiobox USB.

So, I have used the Audiobox USB in a manner forbidden by the manufacturer so my warranty is void. A repair would cost as much as the box itself. Replacement is the only option.

If you are planning on using line level outputs, DO NOT use the Audiobox USB. There are several comparably priced options (Alesys IO2/ M-Audio M-Track for example) that accept line level inputs. Sadly, I own an M-Track and could have easily used it in place of the Audiobox USB.

Look carefully at your interface and beware of assumptions. Mice cost me.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

The product worked fairly well for the first couple months. The recording quality was fine, but then it started producing such a large amount of bqckground noise that the intended recording could hardely be made out in playback. I called the company (Presonus) for support and I spent a very long time on hold before going through a long diagnosis process before learning that I had to ship the unit in for repairs. I did that, and over a month later the unit came back and had even worse problems. It would not be recognized by any computer. I jumped through numerous hoops on online support tickets as the Presonus support staff made ineffective suggestions for remedying the problems. I ended up having to ship it in again. It came back back still with the same problems, and I had to ship it in a third time. It came back, still without the ability to be revognized by any computer. I went through the whole process over again, and once again had the unit returned to me, not in working order. I jumped through hoops trying to get the Audiobox repaired for over 6 months without receiving a successful repair. In that time I spent quite a bit of money shipping the box across the country several times for repairs. I do not recommend purchasing the AudioBox USB or any other Presonus Product.

BEST home studio on a buget, and there is more

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

I have been planning on a new home studio for a very long time and I wanted something I could use with my laptop. I searched and read and found a couple things I liked and wanted, and then this little gem presented itself as a recommendation from a couple friends. One friend contacted my manager and told her about this, so I ended up with it. My very own PreSonus Audiobox USB comes with Studio One and I was able to get the free upgrade to Studio One Version 2. Then I found a bunch of how-to videos on youtube, and then came all the support groups and tutorials. I was not planning on a lot of cool goodies out of one purchase of a home studio set up. There is a lot of cool stuff with this set up, but I will let you find that out for your self because there is more. It is all good. PreSonus also makes some great monitors and I have a set of those with my home studio set up. You will need 2 short guitar cords to hook up to those PreSonus monitors. It does come with the other wires to hook it up. You must get those monitors if you want some amazing sound and great monitors are a MUST for a great mix. Presonus makes amazing gear and for those of you who will use studio one, there is a bunch of cool stuff involved for that. I was just planning on buying a simple studio interface for my laptop and in the process I made some new friends with years of recording and mixing experience that use the same stuff I use. This is a great starter studio and if you are a singer songwriter like me, you will find this is a great tool to have and it will fit in a gig bag too. My entire set up is portable and I can set up anywhere I go and be ready to record.

Don't buy this PreSonus AudioBox !

    By

    from Scottsdale, AZ.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

This PreSonus AudioBox would not work with my Windows 7. After jumping through the PreSonus techs hoops sending info about my computer to them they end up telling me this: "PreSonus is tracking an issue with certain AudioBox USB units that will not connect to more recent Mac and PC computers. These units still function properly with older MAC and PC computers and PreSonus estimates the failure at about 5-10% of the total units based on current information. PreSonus is working quickly to resolve the issue." PreSonus is outrageously irresponsible. They simply can't allow their product to be sold from Guitar Center shelves. A recall is what should happen. PreSonus wasted two days of my time having me think it's my computer. It wasn't read on... I ended up buying a Steinberg UR 22 Audio Interface which was working with Windows 7 within minutes.

    Instant incompatibility

    By

    from Grapeview WA

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

Like many others I found that the drivers that ship with the unit were useless. Also like too many others, the drivers available on line were also useless. Life is too short to sweat this anymore so back it goes. I'm running an older Win XP setup, so no excuses about 'beta test' please.Any issues with this OS should have been addressed long ago. It's pretty clear from reading other reviews that you have about a 1 in four chance of drawing a lemon from this deck. Not looking forward to the 'return' trip.

    Audiobox USB

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

This product was a disappoinment when I bought it.It turned out that the hardware wasn't compatible with my computer. It was supposed to be okay. so I wonder how well the product was made. But a new unit solved the problem. The folks at Kalamazoo Guitar Center provided some support that diagnosed the hardware problem. It does show the value stil exists with personal service - that isn't available for on-line purchases. A lesson indeed.

    Not Macbook Pro compliant

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

Did all my homework. Bought the Presonus. Would not work with the Macbook Pro. Went to the store (Harrisburg GC you rock!) and they tried with a different unit, still no go. Switched to a Focus-rite and synched-up immediately. Be aware of Mac issues.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

I had not considered this unit when I was researching audio interfaces but the salesman at GC recommended it, for the price, why not so I bought it. Got it in my studio, popped it out of the box and plugged it in... done! No drivers or special incantations, just plug and play. I use an older Mac core solo that is only 32 bit so the Studio One software of course would not install, no problem, I already have a DAW I like. I started laying tracks down immediately and the interface works as expected and without any flaws. Great little box, real sturdy metal construction and even though it's USB powered (which is nice) the phantom power is totally adequate to power my vocal condenser mic. I have not used the MIDI in/out yet but I feel confident that will work without a hitch as well. For a buck fifty you can't go wrong... Presonus, you hit this one out of the park!

    No problems what-so-ever.!

    By

    from Fountain Valley, CA.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

Plugged it in and I was off and running immediately. I use an old Mac Mini core solo with Audacity as my DAW. This little piece of hardware works flawlessly. Clean, clear, noiseless with either TS instrument or XLR to mic. Rugged construction and it's intuitive to use. I did not install the supplied studio DAW software because it will not install on a core solo... no big deal, one of these years I'll have to upgrade that old computer. I have not found anything about it that comes up lacking... great hardware Presonus, and a great price too.
