It features a built-in 32x18 FireWire recording and playback engine, so whether you have it permanently installed in your studio or are using it in a live environment, you can capture your performances with discrete track identity.

All of that is before the StudioLive even begins to color and process the original signal. StudioLive's Fat-Channel processing has made a major splash in the pro audio industry, garnering universal acclaim for its ease of use, exacting audio integrity and ultimate musicality. With 4-band EQs, compressors, limiters and gates, DSP effects, 6 aux buses, 4 sub-groups, extensive LED metering, mixer save and recall, channel-strip save/recall/copy/paste, talkback, and more, the StudioLive breaks new boundaries for music performance and production.

StudioLive is loaded with everything needed for professional live sound production totaling 28 compressors, 28 limiters, 28 gates, 28 high-pass filters, 2 stereo reverb/delays, 2 master stereo limiters and more, saving you loads of money and trips from the trailer during load in/out. All StudioLive digital effects are created and processed with 32-bit floating point precision for maximum sonic performance and enhanced musicality.

StudioLive seamlessly integrates a professional digital mixer with a complete multi-channel recording system delivering the most creative environment available for both live performance and studio music production. StudioLive 16.4.2 gives you ultimate creative control in the studio. Record with or without Fat Channel or DSP effects processing. Create mixes, loops, sound effects and more, then bring them out to your show and mix them with the live performance. Process channels using your favorite plug-ins, and completely automate your entire show using your favorite music recording and production software. StudioLive completely revolutionizes music production, opening endless creative possibilities.

Powerful and Easy Digital Mixing
The StudioLive mixer features the innovative and intuitive QuickTouch design allowing fast access to every parameter, mix, effect, and aux, allowing quick and creative control during music production. Load and save functions are also included to create snapshots of channel settings, save effect settings, totally recalling a mix, and more. All digital mixing and effects processing is done with 32-bit floating point precision for unmatched musicality.

Fat Channel

(EQ, Compressor, Limiter, Gate, on every channel)
The heart of StudioLive is the Fat Channel feature, engaged by pressing any "select" button, and features extensive equalization and dynamics available to every input channel, every aux output, every subgroup output, and main output. High pass filter, and four-band semi-parametric equalization algorithms are based on PreSonus' custom-designed digital EyeQ equalizer, delivering extremely musical results. Also included in the Fat Channel are compressors, limiters and gates modeled after PreSonus' award-winning ACP88 for complete dynamics control.

DSP Effects

Two programmable 32-bit stereo DSP effects engines are loaded in StudioLive with a wide range of reverbs, delays, and time-based effects with easy to use parameter adjustment, tap tempo, store, recall, and scene selection for ultimate creative flexibility.

Load and Save Your Settings

The PreSonus StudioLive allows you to save all of your digital settings for quick setup and recall. Save "scenes" (all settings) including fader levels with LED position matching, channel strips (Fat Channel), and individual DSP effects for ultimate ease, quickness and control.

Professional Sound Quality

StudioLive spares no expense when it comes to sound quality. All digital mixing is done with ultra high headroom 32-bit floating point processing for optimal sonic performance. Analog input and output is converted to digital audio with the highest-quality digital converters available delivering a dynamic range of +118dB for spectacular sonic results and unmatched musicality.

Built-in 32x18 FireWire Recording

StudioLive includes PreSonus' award-winning FireWire technology with JetPLL synchronization delivering 22 channels of recording and 18 channels of simultaneous playback. Each FireWire recording channel can be set to record either pre or post Fat-Channel signal processing giving total flexibility and power. StudioLive can also return 18 FireWire playback channels from your recording and production software for remixing and live performance with pre-recorded tracks, as well as studio mixing using the mixer's internal signal processing and summing algorithms. The StudioLive Mixer is compatible with Mac and Windows audio recording and music production software including Logic, Nuendo, Cubase, Sonar, Digital Performer, Audition and more.

Integrated Multi-Track Recording Software—CAPTURE
StudioLive 16.4.2 also ships complete with CAPTURE multi-track recording software so you can effortlessly record your shows right out of the box. CAPTURE software was designed to interface with StudioLive 16.4.2 perfectly to allow instant setup and recording of performances. With the look and feel of industry standard digital multi-track hard disk recorders, CAPTURE software is instantly familiar to every musician and engineer. StudioLive HDR software gives you full editing capability as well as export to WAV file formats for compatibility with ProTools, Cubase, Nuendo, Logic, Sonar and all other recording and music production software. Or you can play back your recorded tracks into StudioLive 16.4.2 via FireWire and mix your tracks with the mixing power and capabilities of the PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2, then record the final mix back to CAPTURE.

XMAX Class A Preamplifiers

StudioLive includes sixteen custom-designed high-voltage, discrete, XMAX Class A microphone preamplifiers for all types of microphones. The job of a microphone preamplifier is to boost microphone level signals to line level so that the signal can be converted from analog to digital. This mic-to-line boost is generally a preamplification of over 400 times the voltage of the original mic level signal. This preamplification stage is one of the most important stages that the signal will go through before being converted to digital, and is why a high performance preamplifier is important to achieving great results.

All XMAX preamplifiers are built with the same three elements:
• High Voltage—The XMAX preamplifier runs on power rails of 30V. Most off the shelf op amp-based designs run on power rails of 10V to 18V. Higher voltage power rails deliver more headroom, deeper lows, smoother highs and an overall fuller sound. .

• Discrete—No op amps. Only transistors, resistors and capacitors. Op amps add noise, coloration and harshness to a signal. Discrete designs deliver ultra low noise and transparency.

• Class A—When a circuit is running in Class A mode the circuit is always in an "on" state operating at its optimal voltage requirements. Class A mode has zero crossover distortion and delivers purer, clearer and more musical sonics than class A/B designs which are found in most op-amp circuits.

The net result of the XMAX preamp design is high headroom, low noise, wide dynamic range and wide frequency range, and most importantly, musicality and transparency—smooth highs, solid deep lows, and everything in between.

VSL Control Software
The optional PreSonus Virtual StudioLive software for Mac and Windows, which is offered as a free download, provides bidirectional control of the StudioLive 16.4.2 digital mixer. Now you can see and control the most-used mixer parameters onscreen, including channel, subgroup, aux send, and main levels, as well as Fat Channel, effects, and graphic EQ settings.

Control the mixer with a mouse or watch VSL update when you adjust the hardware. Drag Fat Channel presets onto all 16 channels in seconds. Mute or solo every channel with a sweep of the mouse. Apply a new Scene to the whole mixer just by dragging it on VSL from a list you see at all times, or collect and trade Scenes with other StudioLive users.

Wirelessly control auxiliary mixes with QMix
With QMix, you can enjoy wireless remote control of any PreSonus StudioLive mixer's aux sends from up to ten Apple iPhones or iPod touches! Let performers create their monitor mixes from individual iPhones. With the Wheel of Me, you can select multiple “Me” channels and control their levels simultaneously. I bought the StudioLive for several reasons. I play in a gigging band and we wanted the ability to hit one button and recall our settings from different clubs. The StudioLive delivered this AND also has given us the ability to record any rehearsal or gig with literally 2 button clicks. I was skeptical when I read about how easy it is to record, but it really is that easy. The last thing that has been great is having a compressor, gate and sweepable eq for every channel. We are even using the fatchannel to eq our monitors. So far we are loving this board and I am glad that I bought it.

I bought a 16.4.2 and couldn't wait to run my first show and record! So I set up the board for the event. It had a surge every 30-40 minutes that would make the whole audio system pop. After trying to contact Presonus for three days they authorized a return at the place of purchase due to it being under 30 days. All went good so I bought another unit. A few months went by and the board jammed whenever plugged into the firewire port. I couldn't get an answer from Presonus on the phone or on their ticket system. The way I got an answer is through their forums and someone else answered with this issue. Now I have to constantly switch from firewire ID 0 to 1 and then back to 0 to work right. Presonus only sent out their general optimizing your computer for digital audio as an answer. Products work great if you don't need their support. If you do, you are boned! I had one device RA'd once, got it back, still failed, tried calling with no answer for over 9 hours and got an answer through the forum. I am now having to send it back again on the same issue. Worst support ever!!!

Excellent mixer, lots of features

By STEVEN WATSON

from Dunkirk, MD

This mixer is awesome and filled with many features and possibilities. Other reviews and articles have covered its many features. Be sure to upgrade the onboard software, it is not hard and adds further features like full 31 band eq on each output including the auxes. Have not had it long, but it has performed flawlessly. It is well built. It is well thought out, intuitive to use. A great value.

Awesome, Amazing, Buy This Now

By Moe Masingale

from Texas

Seriously, if you are looking for a FOH board for that can do monitors, FOH, mild eFx and many pro features, you've found it. We replaced an old analog Yamaha with this beauty and without doing much work with the fat channel stuff we already saw a boost in quality. Then I started in with the Fat Channel and WOW! This is easy to use for someone with a technical background. A green volunteer might be a little overwhelmed at first but that would be the case with any mixer. The more advanced features can be a little elusive to the uninitiated but YouTube helped me with that. This thing does it all. It's the best thing I've ever purchased for our Church and I can wait to get it totally tuned in.

Great Mixer

By MIKAL WEST

from Detroit, MI

While our sound guy can probably give a more thorough review, I just wanted to say that this thing works great. Coming from previous groups where we would just use a cheap PA system. I've never really priced these so can't comment on how it is in relation to other mixers, but in any case this one works great. The firewire capability for recording and saving mixes works fine through a firewire adapter card in a pretty basic windows laptop we use. Has plenty of features we haven't figured them all out yet. 6 peice group with 3 vocalists, and 4 instruments, and we have plenty of channels to spare. However these are fully expandable should you ever out grow it. I believe you can just chain multiple of the same unit together.

Presonus Studio Live Mixer

By PETER RHODE

from Tahoe, California

I bought my Presonus Studio Live from Guitar Center with the hard case and I am very satisfied with its features and capabilities. The Presonus Studio Live is among the first of a new prototype of mixer/recorders that are going totally digital with graphical interfaces and button-press selections and the ability to store and record. It is absolutely important in the Presonus Studio Live series that if you intend to use it for recording or DAW work, you MUST be sure your computer or laptop has a firewire port and chipset that is compatible with the Presonus software. I bought two laptops with firewire ports and they will not work because the firewire chipset in the laptop does not "talk" with the Presonus Capture and Studio Live software. Make sure you go to the Presonus website and download their firewire "tester" that will give you the chipset type in your computer and a list of compatible chipset types that will work! If your pour through the Presonus user forum you will find LOTS of people like me that have laptops/computers with the same problem. After all the trouble I found out that Mac Book Pro's and Mac's with 400/800 firewire ports(it seems today that firewire is slowly being phased out and ESata ports are coming into the picture)are the hot ticket. I love my Presonus Studio Live on live gigs, the preamps, the effects, the EQ's, are fantastic and easy to use. The unit is built very well, and the buttons and faders are solid. I would however rather use an analog mixer (I would much rather use my Mackie Onyx 12.2)for 1-4 singers and a karaoke/DJ input over the Presonus because analog in this case is much easier to tweek on-the-fly changes that DJ/KJ's have to do. But for live band work, the Presonus Studio Live is perfect. I bought the Presonus Studio Live to compare/replace my Zoom R16. The quality and capabilities of the Presonus are clear. While it is easy (and certainly incredibly fast) for me to get a great quality recoding from the Zoom R16 from audio file to CD in a matters of minutes, the Presonus Studio Live goes beyond that with its features and other capabilities like storing setups from performances and easy EQ/compressor/effects tweeking live. Great product, reasonably priced. Guitar Center is very good about backing their products and tech support. The Presonus Forum is also an excellent source for your questions and potential problems!!!

Changing My Opinion Of Presonus

Hands Down Best Live/Recording Mixer!

By Jason

from Tempe, AZ

I have had this mixer for over a month. Have done 12 live shows with this and the features that make the live show stand out are limitless! - Six aux sends means plenty of monitor capacity. Wedges, personal in ear monitors, personal monitors no problem. Each aux send can be mixed on all 16 channels individually. Makes the aux sends diverse and extremely practical to bands - Solo on this board makes you hear everything! Someone saying their monitor is too tinny? Hit solo on their aux and solo on your headphones. You hear what they hear. Need to hear pre or post fade level? No problem! You can solo individual channels without affecting the main sub and aux mixes. Makes it extremely helpful to get good sound results. I can run a show completely from the side instead of running a snake and doing FOH - 16 channel firewire recording makes live show recording as rich as possible! Capture records on the fly, and Studio One Artist that's included can make most live recordings go from blah to master like quality recordings - Remote mixing live shows. This is the only board that has been this easy to do! Just hook up a laptop and remote control your board using VSL. Also set up a remote computer service such as VNC and you can control the mixer from anywhere in the venue with another laptop, an iPad, even your iPhone or Android phone

Best Mixer Hands Down!

By Jason

from Tempe, AZ

I read a lot about this mixer before I purchased it. There were some great info about this product as well as reviews. I finally saved up and got one and I gotta tell you, worth every penny! I ran the Kiwanis Blues Festival with this as my first sound man gig, and it was so simple! I dragged fat channel presets to each channel via my Mac, brought up the trim for each channel, and was done! Sound check took under five minutes! It made the whole event go smooth. And during each band's performance, I recorded their show. During band changes I was able to give them a 16 track mix down of their whole performance on DVD for them to mix and master how they chose. This was a big upsale for most bands that day, and I still get e mails from them on how they mixed their sound and made MP3s from my sound mix. Best mixer ever!!!!

Blown away..

By Jeff Welch

from Ohio

This thing is incredible. I had done the research and read about all the features, but until you actually have one and get to use it, that means pretty much nothing. Doing a lot of work on Pro Tools and other DAWs, I was right at home with the Fat Channel and its many features. The ability to use VSL and have a full graphical interface for all the features on my Mac is great. The board is just easy to use and just makes sense. Tinkering with the Capture demo song, saving my scene, and zeroing everything out to hear the difference was huge. Mixing is quick and easy. I would highly recommend this to anyone on a budget who wants the functionality of a full digital mixer.

Buy this mixer

By JSGG

from Tulsa, OK

I've had mine two weeks in a home studio. The included software and great board are all that's needed for the non-professional musician. Anyone who criticizes this board for flaws has overly-specific needs. If you don't need more than 16 channels, there currently isn't another board comparable to this at the price point. This is one happy owner.
