Overview

StudioLive is one of the most powerful and flexible 16-channel digital mixers the world has ever seen. Equipped with 16 high-headroom XMAX microphone preamplifiers, the initial signal has incredible color, depth and presence, but that's just the beginning. It features a built-in 32x18 FireWire recording and playback engine, so whether you have it permanently installed in your studio or are using it in a live environment, you can capture your performances with discrete track identity.

All of that is before the StudioLive even begins to color and process the original signal. StudioLive's Fat-Channel processing has made a major splash in the pro audio industry, garnering universal acclaim for its ease of use, exacting audio integrity and ultimate musicality. With 4-band EQs, compressors, limiters and gates, DSP effects, 6 aux buses, 4 sub-groups, extensive LED metering, mixer save and recall, channel-strip save/recall/copy/paste, talkback, and more, the StudioLive breaks new boundaries for music performance and production.

StudioLive is loaded with everything needed for professional live sound production totaling 28 compressors, 28 limiters, 28 gates, 28 high-pass filters, 2 stereo reverb/delays, 2 master stereo limiters and more, saving you loads of money and trips from the trailer during load in/out. All StudioLive digital effects are created and processed with 32-bit floating point precision for maximum sonic performance and enhanced musicality.

Best In Both Worlds
StudioLive seamlessly integrates a professional digital mixer with a complete multi-channel recording system delivering the most creative environment available for both live performance and studio music production. Take your recording studio to the gig, and have your soundman record and even enhance your shows with the power of StudioLive.

Create mixes, loops, sound effects and more, then bring them out to your show and mix them with the live performance. Process channels using your favorite plug-ins, and completely automate your entire show using your favorite music recording and production software. StudioLive completely revolutionizes music production, opening endless creative possibilities.

(EQ, Compressor, Limiter, Gate, on every channel)
The heart of StudioLive is the Fat Channel feature, engaged by pressing any "select" button, and features extensive equalization and dynamics available to every input channel, every aux output, every subgroup output, and main output. High pass filter, and four-band semi-parametric equalization algorithms are based on PreSonus' custom-designed digital EyeQ equalizer, delivering extremely musical results. Also included in the Fat Channel are compressors, limiters and gates modeled after PreSonus' award-winning ACP88 for complete dynamics control.

DSP Effects

Two programmable 32-bit stereo DSP effects engines are loaded in StudioLive with a wide range of reverbs, delays, and time-based effects with easy to use parameter adjustment, tap tempo, store, recall, and scene selection for ultimate creative flexibility.

Load and Save Your Settings

The PreSonus StudioLive allows you to save all of your digital settings for quick setup and recall. Save "scenes" (all settings) including fader levels with LED position matching, channel strips (Fat Channel), and individual DSP effects for ultimate ease, quickness and control.

Professional Sound Quality

StudioLive spares no expense when it comes to sound quality. All digital mixing is done with ultra high headroom 32-bit floating point processing for optimal sonic performance. Analog input and output is converted to digital audio with the highest-quality digital converters available delivering a dynamic range of +118dB for spectacular sonic results and unmatched musicality.

Built-in 32x18 FireWire Recording

StudioLive includes PreSonus' award-winning FireWire technology with JetPLL synchronization delivering 22 channels of recording and 18 channels of simultaneous playback. Each FireWire recording channel can be set to record either pre or post Fat-Channel signal processing giving total flexibility and power. StudioLive can also return 18 FireWire playback channels from your recording and production software for remixing and live performance with pre-recorded tracks, as well as studio mixing using the mixer's internal signal processing and summing algorithms. The StudioLive Mixer is compatible with Mac and Windows audio recording and music production software including Logic, Nuendo, Cubase, Sonar, Digital Performer, Audition and more.

StudioLive HDR software gives you full editing capability as well as export to WAV file formats for compatibility with ProTools, Cubase, Nuendo, Logic, Sonar and all other recording and music production software. Or you can play back your recorded tracks into StudioLive 16.4.2 via FireWire and mix your tracks with the mixing power and capabilities of the PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2, then record the final mix back to CAPTURE.

XMAX Class A Preamplifiers

StudioLive includes sixteen custom-designed high-voltage, discrete, XMAX Class A microphone preamplifiers for all types of microphones. The job of a microphone preamplifier is to boost microphone level signals to line level so that the signal can be converted from analog to digital. This mic-to-line boost is generally a preamplification of over 400 times the voltage of the original mic level signal. This preamplification stage is one of the most important stages that the signal will go through before being converted to digital, and is why a high performance preamplifier is important to achieving great results.

All XMAX preamplifiers are built with the same three elements:
¢ High Voltage”The XMAX preamplifier runs on power rails of 30V. Most off the shelf op amp-based designs run on power rails of 10V to 18V. Higher voltage power rails deliver more headroom, deeper lows, smoother highs and an overall fuller sound. .

¢ Discrete”No op amps. Only transistors, resistors and capacitors. Op amps add noise, coloration and harshness to a signal. Discrete designs deliver ultra low noise and transparency.

¢ Class A”When a circuit is running in Class A mode the circuit is always in an "on" state operating at its optimal voltage requirements. Class A mode has zero crossover distortion and delivers purer, clearer and more musical sonics than class A/B designs which are found in most op-amp circuits.

The net result of the XMAX preamp design is high headroom, low noise, wide dynamic range and wide frequency range, and most importantly, musicality and transparency”smooth highs, solid deep lows, and everything in between.

VSL Control Software
The optional PreSonus Virtual StudioLive software for Mac and Windows, which is offered as a free download, provides bidirectional control of the StudioLive 16.4.2 digital mixer. Now you can see and control the most-used mixer parameters onscreen, including channel, subgroup, aux send, and main levels, as well as Fat Channel, effects, and graphic EQ settings.

Control the mixer with a mouse or watch VSL update when you adjust the hardware. Drag Fat Channel presets onto all 16 channels in seconds. Mute or solo every channel with a sweep of the mouse. Apply a new Scene to the whole mixer just by dragging it on VSL from a list you see at all times, or collect and trade Scenes with other StudioLive users.

Wirelessly control auxiliary mixes with QMix
With QMix, you can enjoy wireless remote control of any PreSonus StudioLive mixer's aux sends from up to ten Apple iPhones or iPod touches! Let performers create their monitor mixes from individual iPhones. With the Wheel of Me, you can select multiple œMe channels and control their levels simultaneously. I bought the StudioLive for several reasons. I play in a gigging band and we wanted the ability to hit one button and recall our settings from different clubs. The StudioLive delivered this AND also has given us the ability to record any rehearsal or gig with literally 2 button clicks. I was skeptical when I read about how easy it is to record, but it really is that easy. The last thing that has been great is having a compressor, gate and sweepable eq for every channel. We are even using the fatchannel to eq our monitors. So far we are loving this board and I am glad that I bought it.

Do not ever buy a Presonus product, ever. Bought a $2000 mixer slightly over a year ago. It has not left my desk since I purchased it. I sent it in for repairs for faders that were malfunctioning and turning up and down all by themselves. It was returned to me with THAT problem fixed, however they removed all the Gain knobs from the board (for cleaning I assume) and never put them back on the board before they shipped it back to me. To add to that, there is now a NEW problem with the board where the EQ section and Compressor section of the board will not react to their corresponding selector knobs and the indicators move up and down on their own. This was NOT even close to an issue when I sent the board in. AND keep in mind that the board allegedly 'passed quality control' before they shipped it back to me. Absolutely unacceptable. Worst experience I've ever had with a piece of gear. STAY AWAY.

Comments about Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 Digital Mixer:

We use this for rehearsal, gigs and recording. It's amazing! There's a bit of a learning curve, it's not like a common mixer. Put in the time on youtube training videos and this mixer will amaze you over and over again as you learn what all it can do. All that's left now is reliability. Only time will tell

Comments about Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 Digital Mixer:

I mix live shows, and I am a band leader myself. I was so excited to get this thing out of the box. It was a bit different from the basic analog board, but if you can mix, and are remotely familiar with live sound, it should not have been a problem. What they don't tell you is, it is the most unreliable piece of equipment I have ever used. For starters, once you go and purchase the macbook and iPad, you're already in the hole an additional 3-4k if lucky. And believe me, it is much easier to use with the additional apple products. You can use it without, but monitoring and analyzing your sound would be darn near impossible, as only half of the eq is displayed on the board. I found this out the hard way.

Also, I have only used it live 3 times. Thank my lucky stars I took my backup board. It clips like crazy, and only produces low end sound. Mixing mice was like trying to stop a downhill train. My band has been playing all over the world for over 10 years. I just received my first bad review, due to the sound. I had other engineers there, and everyone was just completely baffled on the complexity of this board. When it's in the garage, and you're playing your iPod thru it, it sounds awesome. When you are playing live, I hope you have a plastic cover for when the audience starts to throw liquid objects at you.

Oh how I hope it's not too late to return this thing.

    Great Board For PROFESSIONAL Musicians

Comments about Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 Digital Mixer:

I'm not big on writting reviews but I'm tired of reading bad reviews on this board that are simply because the user doesn't know how to opperate thier equipment.. I'm not trying to insult anyone, but if you play a show or two each month with some old friends at a local bar this really isn't a board you need. This board is more complex and can do more things than most people would ever think about knowing how to control. This board is a live touring band's board. Designed to work great with IEM's and set up so that you can run through a router and use you're phone to control mixes as well as run straight into a laptop and record live with the included software. If you're not going to take the time to LEARN how to run a digital board, go buy an old analog!! This board is a great sounding and performing board that has more features than I could begin to list, reviewers please stop blaming the product for your ignorance...

Comments about Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 Digital Mixer:

This product is not reliable. It has now failed twice on different shows. After the first repair we were told that it was the firewire cable even though we tried to run it without the firewire. We did two shows with it just fine and then on the third day of the last show it failed without the firewire connected at all. It makes a pop sound and then silence....it has to be reset. It crashed three times in a few minutes at our last gig. Great concept, LOUSY ELECTRONICS! Do not purchase the Presonus 16.4.2 if you mix live events! We are purchasing an LS9 today as we cannot afford to have the sound go out with hundreds of paid customers listening.

Comments about Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 Digital Mixer:

Well upon purchasing the StudioLive thinking I could get a iPad and be on my way.."Wrong!" What they don't tell you is that you need a MacBook connected by firewire and a wireless router. A MacBook is only $1300-$1800 depending on what you get and tack on a iPad to purchase. If your looking at using this for Live sound???.... it's nothing like an analog board. It will sound good but you will need to learn new EQ curves with this board. The output is touchy..it would clip my powered QSC's while only putting out low volume. I'm already into this board $3500 and I'm going to have to make it work.

I bought this mixer about three years ago the first time I used it the band automatically sounded good. It gave me tools that were only available in software and mixers that costed four times more. It saved my back from carrying racks full of comps, gates, and graphic EQs. I got more clients because how good it sounds and I don't even have top brand name mains PA. The only problem is it has a short life span, once the mixer start getting hiccups you start losing confidence in the mixer. Luckily it froze on me in a rehearsal I immediately got a backup mixer.I'm not going back to presonus till they start using high quality components and the best practices in manufacturing.

I like it way better than anything that I mentioned above. It's really user friendly, especially if you are a working musician that plays an instrument, sings, and runs sound all at the same time.

Only adapter is Express Card slot which I don't have either so told my laptops won't work. After two days of searching I've been unable to find even a new laptop that has either the firewire or express card slot. Not sure even made anymore. Check before you buy.

Comments about Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 Digital Mixer:

Extremely versatile mixer. Can remember settings for different clubs or mixes and call up those setting the next time you play there. Works great with studio one and Pro Tools (although I'm liking studio one 2 pro better than ProTools 10, but that's a different review). Easy routing the sound to buses, monitors, headphones or control room. Fat channel really cleans up the sound for live and studio. Can keep the board onstage and the soundman can mix the room from an Ipad out front. Don't really need the snake with this baby, but you do need a laptop w/firewire and a router to create your own wireless connection for the IPad and Iphones to mix the sound. My best resource for learning what this board can do has been You Tube..
